Quick update time! We have been really busy at MCNSPORT with the last while now, and I'm pleased to say that progress has been good. As is the way since this project started I'm getting an education on how to do things to the highest level, and even though this way isn't the cheapest or quickest, it is the best, and I'm sure you'll agree that the results so far are cool. Im just delighted to have such a well prepared car and I hope we can get it handling and going really well in a short space of time. However, Rome wasn't built in a day and it will probably take a while to iron out a few teething problems that you will have with any new race or drift car. At this stage the project has almost taken on the shape of Darren's Need For Speed D Mac 86's younger brother, but in simpler form. The same thinking and attention to detail which has become MCNSPORT's trademark is present in both projects and both share relatively similar engine setups, once again with the FC having a less extreme street porting job carried out.
The car is getting ever closer to being fired up, and that moment is going to be a big one for all of us. It's been a long, hard project which has been a labour of love and the amount of man hours already gone into it must be well into the thousands. At the start of the chassis work it was as much about restoration as anything else and the way that the shell alone has turned out is a testament to Holly, Happy, Darren, Dan and everyone else who was involved. Thanks lads
Ive also been without my own drift car for almost 8 months now and Ive missed having one like fcuk, and it will be a moment I'll remember for a long time hearing the 13B fire up for the first time.
So the all important blower arrived, and it's a big 'un! The bigger they are the harder they blow apparently, ahem
And its a special one: An Owen Developments special with a Garrett GT35R core with 4" inlet and 3" V band exhaust side, twin scroll T4 exhaust flange and .86 A/R back housing. Its a similar unit as used on many Rallycross Supercars and hopefully it should be a really good unit on the ported 13B.
And it's mounted on a HKS twin scroll manifold with a 55mm HKS external wastegate
These are the radiator and oil cooler brackets made by Happy Darren. The Japspeed rad is going to be held on top by the V mounted Japspeed intercooler www.japspeed.ie
The battery is a Varley Red Top 30 Amp dry cell racing battery and it has been mounted behind the passenger seat to help to give even weight distribution left to right. The batterys are available at www.mcnsport.com
We have also seam welded the rear suspension turrets
Now these are a couple of my favourite parts of the car so far, the Barrys Motorsport flocked dash and the ASD hydraulic handbrake.
I took the dash up to Michael Barry of Barry's Motorsport on Model Farm Road in Cork with one or two holes in it (well, MAYBE ten or twelve) wrongly thinking that flocking is done by wrapping the dash in a vinyl wrap. It's not. Its sprayed on, so major shout out to Mike and the boys for filling all the holes and doing a perfect job of flocking all the dash for very reasonable money, which is about a million times better that the grey fake leather finish that was on it. It also prevents glare off the dash and while you have it off you can do major lightening to your car by removing all the air con and heater stuff! Give Mike a shout on 087 6704159 or go to the Barry's Motorsport trading page on driftireland at http://www.driftireland.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=53
That ASD handbrake is just a work of art and it's engineered to the highest level. ASD build, run and develop 4 of the 6 Falken Tire cars in Formula D including D Mac's awesome Saturn Sky so you can be assured that anything they produced is built to the highest level. The handbrakes can be got with mounting plates for S bodys to bolt directly to the standard handbrake mounting point on the tunnel and can be got in vertical or lie-down versions so contact www.mcnsport.com if you fancy one!
The seats and harnesses are one of the few things to come over into the FC from the S13
We are using 8mm braided fuel feed and return lines, again available from www.mcnsport.com
This is the adapter plate which sits between the FC lower inlet manifold and the FD upper inlet manifold. The FC upper inlet manifold gets restrictive as power levels rise so we decided to run an FD upper, which brings its own problems, such as matching wiring, throttle cable, vacuum pipes etc. Thanks to Japanese Performance for supplying the FD parts http://www.facebook.com/JapanesePerformance
Darren and welder extraordinaire Austin sorting out the aluminium welding
The brakes are all plumbed up, even though they're still a small bit squishy
Another neat touch is the standard rear toe control arms, which have been made adjustable at MCNSPORT. They have ball joints at both ends so the standard arms are well up to the job now that they are adjustable. The new adjustable camber links are also in place.
The next part is the fun part: Wiring! Once that is done its over to another new sponsor, Hayward Rotary www.mazdarotary.co.uk for mapping on the Apexi Power FC. We have decided to run 109 octane race fuel, with a petrol to race fuel ratio of 2:1. This is going to be expensive, but rotaries like the stuff and it will keep charge temp and overall temperatures down so the way I'm looking at it is it will be cheaper than melting a rotor tip. All going well by next week we will have a video of the car being driven down the road outside McNamaras.
Go big or go home![]()
