That sounds a lot more like a headgasket then anything to me, it's sounds like its gone between a coolant channel and one of the cylinders, it doesn't have to have mayo in the oil to be a headgasket.

Is she slow to start in the morning white smoke out the back?

No typical diesel starts first time every time with a puff of black smoke. Might get a sniff test done to check the head gasket. Im guessin if it is the head gasket it would be cheaper to buy an engine.

Why do people always assume headgasket failure = mixing oil and water..

    Head gasket failure can =
Oil leak (In to cylinders or outside the block)
Water leak (Into cylinders or outside the block)
Mixing oil and water. either way
    Or pressurising the water.
Also could be blowing compression between cylinders. or out between the head at the block.

Head gaskets can go in lots of different ways.

Also if its been boiled, 100% your head will be cracked. Which will also cause it to put pressure into the water.

But as said, it could be blocked rad, weak fan or fan not working? water pump not pumping? could be loads of things

Had a mechanic friend over today to have a look. Did sniffer test and it seams ok. Its seams the fan isnt working correctly. It dosent lock as it should and stays spinning at the same speed all the time and not speeding up with the revs. So anyone know where to get a second hand fan for a 98 suzuki grand vitara mazda diesel??????????????
