    WEEK - 1

John continued cutting and removing as much weight as possible, but without sacrificing any strength in the shell.. Then he began reinforcing the rear with an X-bar from the rear chassis legs up through the floor to the rear top strut towers..

The S14 in TDP's cage building room..

Marking out where needs to be cut

Rear inner pockets, quarters and boot floor cut out

Rear tank cover section cut out for bracing

    Starting the reinforcing X-bar

    X-bar complete!

Plates welded in for the rear section of the cage

And making up floor plates for the centre part of the cage

Floor plate in the pan and box folder

And in place. Although this is a pic of the passenger side plate, ya get the idea!

Now for the main hoop, windscreen bar and A-pillar bars..

    Front fully welded

    Rear fully welded

Rear welded to the floor plates - drivers side

    Passenger side

Front driver side welded to floor plate

And front passenger side welded to floor plate

    Starting to take shape now!

These inside photo's show how the cage is tilted back slightly following the B-pillar line..

And reinforced by a supporting bar, from the main hoop to the roof / A-pillar bar

The rear section of the cage - from the main hoop down to the rear strut tower

And across to the passenger side

    Main hoop supported

    Same on the passenger side

And here's the rear triangle, from the rear strut towers that will run in an X
across the roof section and down the A-pillars which will stop the shell twisting
and transmit force from each corner of the car to the opposite corner!

Main hoop strengthened and supported by an X-bar first!

Which is welded to the main hoop support, each of which is welded to a floor
plate just above the front bolt's of the rear subframe!

Roof triangle in place to transmit the force from the rear triangle down the A-pillar bars!

John welding plates to the front strut tower's...

    And notching a pipe for...

This! A reinforcing bar from the bottom of the A-pillar bar to the strut tower!

Welding to the plate at the strut tower

And supported by a second bar to the A-pillar!

As of now the cage is nearly complete, but this is put on hold untill monday as a racecar needs the full team's attention tomorrow! I cannot WAIT untill the cage is finished, but watching each section being built is a great way to learn the cars week and strong points and how to work with them! Untill next week, chow!

It would be a shame not to crash it with a cage like that.

Yeah its unreal, credit to the lads - they really know what they're doing and even have the time to explain what every single bar in the cage is for and why exactly they're putting it there! Especially with the additional bracing and support to stiffen the chassis, and the tubing used there is a thinner wall and much lighter than that of the main safety points so its benifits are huge in comparison to the slight additional weight they add!
