raise both rear wheels, either on a ramp or use axle stands (remember to chock the front wheels)
run car in 3rd gear, apply throttle and light brake at the same time, the braking will put a load...

Some of you will know my E36 from the last couple of days at mondello, unfortunately it needs to go as I need to get myself a daily, and also invest some money back into my job.

I have an e36 325 ready to rock, just needs a set of coilovers (i can get brand spanking new ones for €200) and a harness that I'd let off for a grand, 3rd gear in mondello no problem, Martin Tracey...

haha at least i know now :P gonna hunt around a bit more and see what i find.. do you know will any earlier pinion shafts fit the e36 casing and mesh with the e46 4.44 crownwheel?
hurmph, after splitting both diffs it would appear that the e46 internals do not fit the e36 casing, due to the pinion shaft being shorter.. back to the drawing board!
What way is your ecu mounted? I heard of one before exhibiting similar symptoms, the problem the owner found the ecu wasn't securely mounted and was earthing itself off the cage. Could be worth a...
Found me a 4.44 diff digging around the parts area earlier! It's from an e46 though, so will have to swap the casings.. i'll start on that tonight!
