I had the same problem as you Ian I had 50 mm rad + twin electric fans I have a Greddy temp gauge in the top hose it use to read about 10 deg higher than my PFC i went trough the same shit changing rad s using nismo low temp termostat nothing was working I taut the head was gone a few times then 2 wks ago was out messing an it finally went on me, not sayin that's what it is but sound s exactly like the way mine was going

O check Your rad cap if you havint already it could be the rubber seal gone on it too I had one fail on me a while ago I'd replace that first

But maybe what the lads are saying would want to be taken into consideration first? Your getting a reading as the coolant is coming out of the engine when its going to be at its highest temperature...

ye its gonna be a few degress higher if you have a gauge plumbed into the top hose,but shouldnt be getting tempertures that high ,did you check your rad cap yet
