Ok,

So generally i'm pretty level-headed and I usually know what I want. Except when it comes to cars....The last time I bought a Jap car I went looking for and Evo V and ended up with a Honda Stream 7 seater, the time before that I wanted an Evo IV and ended up with an S14a.

And my first drift project was no exception. It started after Valentines Day when I finally sold a bastard of a 106 gti runabout. I decided I would buy in the UK with the yen rate quite bad. S14/14a it was. A well prepared example. I then thought it would be more involving to get it standard and modify it. So I looked for a standard model, even considered an auto , so then I mailed Andy @ Powervehicles with my budget and was very surprised with what I could get. With the Yen a bit poor, there are some great bargains!

So with deposit sent I went after what I wanted, a Red S14 Zenki. Didn't see any I liked and after a lot of thought, I changed to wanting a JZX of some sort. 81's were too rare so it was a well modded 90 or even a 100. So I mailed Andy and said 1jz only, and typically the very next day I saw a Red S14 I wanted! I ended up not buying it in the end thankfully.

Anyway last week this came up and I fell in love, and had to have it....

It's a 1990 Mark II JZX81. It went through as a genuine grade 4, which was pretty cool. Considering the age etc. it's really mint. Maybe I am going blind as I would have sworn it was Blue in the auction pics but anyway it's Green.

It currently has light mods but I am planning to further modify it during the year as much as time/money allows. I have a couple of quid left in my budget so my plans were FMIC and maybe a cage, or whatever would be best but we will see. It litterally only arrived at Powervehicles today so no rush. It has:

Full Free Dom Aero
Coilovers
Air Filter
Exhaust
LSD
R33 GTR Alloys
HID's
Mint Bride Seat
Boost Gauge
Wooden Nardi Wheel
Dildo gearknob
I think thats it!

Anyway thanks for reading and comments welcome

Kieran

So I spoke with Andrew today about the X81's trip to Kazama Auto, and it confirmed our fears... kinda lol

The day of the auction, Andrew couldn't make it. It was too far to travel, and I knew this way in advance, but he had it checked on the day. It started, and ran they then stopped it then it wouldn't start. Maybe it was flooded which is not uncommon apparently. I made the decision to go ahead with the bid but he did advise me it was a risk.

So last week when it arrived in Tokyo it was a bit smokey. See clip below. He suspected tired turbos. So when it was checked there seems to be an oil leak around the rear turbo area, but seeing as that bit of the engine bay is packed tighter than a pornstars undies it will really need to be stripped to be sure. If it turns out to be one gone, then the two may as well be done, would be stupid not to. An upgrade is gonna be too rich at the minute and I don't need a monster right now anyway. He/Kazama were happy the engine was fine but they are doing a few more checks first just incase.

Other than that it needs a CV joint on the rear and has a leak in a line around the rack somewhere so he's gonna quote to have the rack n stuff replaced. Then she's good to go!:D

I was dissapointed when I heard/saw the smoke but it is nearly 20 years old and looking on the brightside it should be super fresh when it arrives.

The wait continues......

So I concidered re-auctioning the car when we confirmed the turbo issue but it was going to cost as much as fixing it, and at least if would be fresh, so I decided to sort it.

Andy did a compression test and it made 160psi on 3 and 155 on 3 so at least the motor seems ok. Both Andy and Kazama apparently were happy everything else bar the turbo(s) were 100%. When the plugs were out he changed them for HKS Iridium M40I's. He replaced some perished vacum pipework and a knackered ignitor too.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0141.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0140.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0142.jpg

Then came happy Friday, yay! I did think the turbo issue was a bit odd, to have such a big issue not mentioned on the auction sheet, and Andy obviously did too because without my knowledge he had put a claim against the seller, and hey presto they provided a pair of rebuilt units, winner!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0371.jpg

The turbo's arrived last week and seem fine so are going on this week, along with the cv joint/driveshaft and new steering rack and pipes. I've a couple of other bits as well and 1 other thing I don't think Andy or Emily can't find but no big deal, I am keeping an eye on yahoo auctions....

All going well she will be shipped on the 20th.....:)

Fredericks Balls

So the posts above are the updates from when I bought the car on Easter Saturday up until May 11th. The turbos were fitted and without plates could only be tested on a short trip but no smoke and everything seems fine. The plugs/ignitor/pipe replacements have made a big difference in the general performance of the motor. The entire steering system has been replaced (rack and all pipes) bar the pump for rebuilt parts as was 1 CV joint and driveshaft. It made the boat on May 20th and is due in Barcelona on July 2nd, and Heogh shipping are telling me it will be 5 to 7 days from there :D

I bought one part which didnt arrive so is comming seperatly, I dont know what colour yet but it will be handy for security more than anything else:

http://www.worksbell.co.jp/en/products/rapfix/

And in case any friendly car nabbers come equipped with a Works Bell kit and a spare wheel I got this cool lock too:

http://www.worksbell.co.jp/en/products/rapfix/key_lock_system.htm

Oh and I got some JIC C spanners for the coilovers too.

And thats it for now. I gotta get a long and low 2 tonne jack to reach the diff and make a pair of 4 inch tall ramps ala Powervehicles for handy jacking. Main things on the list are FMIC,cage and Wheels and some track days :D

My wife wants to go to New York in October, just before my birthday so i'm building the brownie points as she doesnt know it yet but she will be buying me rear wheels as a pressie :D

Thanks mate, yea it looks pretty mint, cant f&%kin wait! I have never seen one in person, a lovely 100 has passed me twice and thats the closest i've come to JZX-ness, so i'm hoping to have a good gawk at chucks Chaser tomorrow. And to hear one too.

No not really, not since I bought. I'd have the odd look at the USS auctions if im bored, but info is easily got so maybe it looks like i am :)

Oh yea, from May 19th:

Serious Love: have a close look at the cars on that trailer. The blue 180 next to mine was the super cheap one I was telling you about and the Silver S14 was the damaged car with HKS bits and the Dog Box.

This box was waiting for me when I got home earlier :D
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_7907.jpg
It was supposed to be in the car but didn't arrive in time so was posted. Considering it only left on June 4th it got here quick! So anyway its a Works Bell Rapfix II snap off kit with security lock. I mainly got it for security reasons but its a savage piece of kit none the less. The colour doesnt match but was the only colour available at present. I guess i can match it to other bits in the future

Steering column part on the left, wheel part in the middle and lock on the right

Ok so if it fits and its not huge, which im pretty sure it wont be I will have Darraghs lovely wheel to go on the new boss for the car:
http://i479.photobucket.com/albums/rr156/driftireland/IMG_0743.jpg

And the only other interior thing i wasnt 100% with was the radio:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/JZX81.jpg

Theres nothing specifically wrong with it but the radio in the Stream is way nicer. So this became available and i'm gonna buy it. I may have a buyer for the radio above if not it will be for sale along with the wooden wheel and the TRD horn. The radio below will either end up in the Stream or the 81 as the radio in the Stream is black so i'll see which suits better.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_1839.jpg

I know I know, there not really gonna help me to go sideways but they were cheap bits to sort out and i am totally happy with them so im done with that stuff for now. Roll on 4 weeks.... :D

Sorry i never noticed you posted. Get it; register it, get it NCT'd which i hope should be a piece of cake. I see no reason why it wouldn't
Actual update wise, i will slam it as much as possible, it seems mint now but im not too worried about roughing up the kit. Kinda thinking of spraying the wheels as i wont be changing them for a while. I've been onto Garage-d to see if they can replicate Chucks cage but no response so far and im waiting to see about 2 cages for sale in Canada. But with my idea of just doing it once id rather buy a cage i don't want to have to replace down the road as its not up to the job...

After that it needs a proper front mount then maybe i will start on electrical gadgets.

Other than that i'll play it by ear.

BUT I now have more solid arrival info lol. Car is not stopping in Barcelona tomorrow, its going to Newcastle and will be there next Tuesday/Wednesday and will go by truck and be in Dublin the following Sunday/Monday. Im just awaiting written confirmation that I should have any day now.

Feckin impatient drifters! Sorry though i set out with the intentions of updating the thread on the three sites i post on but the plan fell apart after the first, so this is copied but theres nothing really to ad!

So the car arrived last week, and after the usual ball aching exercise of customs to be done we picked it up! It surprisingly started on the button, and apart from a drivers side rear flat she drove out. Turned out the tyre was off the rim so a quick trip to an air line and she was good to go!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/20072009252.jpg

And off i went! Registered it and drove home. I couldnt get my policy organised fully on the day so I had only a few hours then I got it sorted last Wednesday and in the mean time fitted the boss kit and the Black Nardi And lowered it

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_7932.jpg

At the minute I have litterally 5mm clearence front & rear to get in and out of the driveway so the ride height will have to stay like that until i sort out an alarm then the driveway can fuck off and the front will go at least an inch lower and the rear at least 3 i hope...

And lastly taken today it got a wash but needs a polish

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_7936.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_7934.jpg

So my impression. I absolutely love it!! Its noisey, the diff is clunky, it has rock hard suspension the seat is pretty small so my ears ring my back is sore and my ribs hurt after a drive but i wouldnt change any of it! It's all I had hoped for and more, and after that I would never look at a Silvia again...

I do have two issues. 1 the cd player doesnt work so I have no radio. I couldnt care less, i am happy to listen to the engine but eventually i will swap it as i have another. 2 The car has randomly stopped starting! I had it with a Toyota mechanic and I mailed Andy and we all have the same opinion which is it has to be a corroded/lose connection or maybe earth. If so its certainly not in the engine bay so i will put it on axle stands ASAP and check out the box etc. (i'm itching to get out of here today to get the axle stands out, this boosty noisey skiddy stuff is addictive! :D )

Otherwise the rain made for some good 3rd gear fun yesterday :D

And despite the small hiccup I just want to say a HUGE thanks to Andy and Emily @ Powervehicles for all their help, they are legends, no offence to the other dealers here but I wouldn't even consider dealing with anyone else in the future...

It wouldn't be something stupid like an aftermarket immobiliser or something would it???

The 81's just look lower, and longer, and more wreckable than the 100's. Every car should look wreckable. :)

Yea, thats the other thing i will do is pull the plugs, give them a clean. But yea your right, maybe ill bump the map bit up the list of things to do. To do that would i not need like a PFC or just a boost controller. ATM it has nothing, not even a turbo timer.

Nah no A/M immobiliser yet!

Hell yea, the coupe lads had there meet last weekend we need a four doors of f**k you meet, would be well awesomer!! :D

So a small update today.

I went in to Jack & Jones and got a bucket load of tight boxers cos i nearly bursted a nut about 20 times in the past week jumping in to the anorexic seat :D

My wife is worried the childrens allowance will be gone if it keeps up! :p

Other than that she is running grand. Has to be the most confusing car i've ever seen, not 1 single person has been able to tell me what it is, even most petrol heads I know...

So i'm done with the interior for now, apart from swapping head units if I can ever figure out a handier way of removing it than dropping the engine and going at it through the bulkhead :o

(yes i know it needs a wash!!)

I've also got a bag of Redline Gearbox & Diff oils to go in and some Motul for the engine.

And my darling wife (i hope she's reading this :p ) bought me a lovely Trust IC from an R33 GTR drag car so I should have that after the weekend. So i gotta get pipework made up then get it on the dyno, and sort out some skid wheels so i can get it out ASAP

Thanks mate. I knew about the Supra, didnt know about the S14. I was almost going to buy that S14 and but the box/clutch and coilovers into a more standard s14, it was a bargain! Decided not to in the end cos im a lazy f**ker and that would be too much work!

So I went to get the service done today and arrived home with only my steering wheel :(

We made a mistake and drained the diff oil before opening the filler bolt. 2 leverage bars and an airgun later and its still on. So back tomorrow to drop the diff and try again

Looks like two bolts to the car and two large allens to the subfrance, drop the prop and the driveshafts and out she comes, so hopefully we can get it sorted...

Fredericks Balls
01-03-10, 18:20
Ok so where to begin. Basically the car now looks like the pics above ha

So I swapped the new(er) ECU in and fucked off the HKS plugs for Denso's, what was originally taken out for the HKS' yokes. And she ran sweet. So I rebuilt the drivers side interior, boot, cleaned up the rest bar the glove box just incase, put the bumper back on, and taxed it! Took it for a quick 200 mile roundtrip and all seemed ok, so I fitted my Christmas presents! The Gram Lights and the Federals for the fronts

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0053.jpg

So my dad made me some cool ramps, I got him to do 4 but i really only need two, at its lowest I could still drive up onto them and clear enough to jack from the chassis rail/suspension/diff, so no more sill jacking :D

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0054.jpg

The rears are 265's on a 9.5J and I thought they would look stupid but I'm quite liking the stance like that, and its very daily driveable too.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0056.jpg

So after I took that picture, I took it out and got it washed and waxed it and it looked great but before I got a chance to take any pictures it was Monday and back to work and given a current family situation, my daily trips from Monaghan to Dublin and back. So by Tuesday it was manky.

I then decided to drop it on its arse for the craic! I did the rears first and the front the day after

Issue number 1: (I can get it up the drive at an angle! :D )

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0069.jpg

I think 225's and maybe a small spacer might look better
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0071.jpg

And then with the fronts done:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0089.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0090.jpg

So now its broke down again :( The fuel pump appears to be running off the side & fog lights  Fogs on make it run on start up pressure, thus flooding it and sides make it work on normal, which essentially is fine only it does neither now, and broke on me in Ardee! Got it towed home today and to tow it i took off the bumper and raised it right up to be safe. Gonna hand it over to an auto electrician to fully sort out once and for all!!

Thanks for reading! :)

So another small update:

Ok, well if you read my last post you'll know that the car is currently out of order with a frankly weird electrical problem. So I did the most rational, intelligent thing the other day....

So thanks to Yowdy and another nice chap (didnt get his name sorry :o) part 1 or operation fix the fucker was completed and now the car is with a recommended auto electrician at last after 4 weeks sitting around. All going well i might hear some news after the weekend.

I got a spare set of coils as it is tending to misfire a bit but i think its the shitty connections rather than the coils. So im considering a wasted spark kit to bypass all that craic. Worth the hassle anyone?

Eh not now it aint :D

Just brought it home, and I have a list of bits to do.

Bleed brakes so I can stop
Replace a bearing/bush midway between the box and the diff on the prop (apparently i'll see it when I look under the car!)
Lower it a few feet
tracking
check the lights
and a couple of other things I forgot

Oh yea see the assessor to sort out the damage after nearly 6 months!

Mick K

So,She good? Tell me all?

Fredericks Balls
09-04-10, 10:57
Nah, not anymore. Dunno what it is now. Once or twice I started the car i thought it was weird, it was starting sometimes almost too quick. Then I went to the shop, got in and started it, it ran for a few seconds and died (EM light on). Then started it again but would just turn over and not start. left it ten seconds and she started fine. Drove off, and about 1 minute later im doing about 50k's in fifth and it jolted like it was out of juice, the EM light is on again and its slowing, then picks up again. I stop at the next roundabout and it cuts out. Same again, wouldnt start, left it a few second and it started again... Same when I pulled up at the house.

My only retarded thoughts are the fuel system might be losing pressure. Maybe I should put the standard pump back in and see if that helps...

Mick K
09-04-10, 11:03
I'd defo say its a pump issue

Fredericks Balls
09-04-10, 11:06
well the old one was obviously ok so it will do no harm swapping it back (only its a pain in the hole!)

Mick K
09-04-10, 11:08
I'd wait till you burn any fuel in the tank tho

Fredericks Balls
09-04-10, 11:16
True, although I can just syphon it out and put it in the other shit box at the house :D The last time I did the pump I had litterally done about 20 miles from a €60 fill up. Took me all day i was bolloxed after draining it!

Fredericks Balls
16-04-10, 16:21
Ok so we are making progress now. Kind of! The guys came out to the house today finally. So before, the car drove, albeit not 100% but drove. I then pull the fuel pump relay and now it wouldn't even start, with the new or old relay.

So after checking stuff, we pulled out bits of the dash and changed the ECU. Boom, started on the button. Then put in the other ECU again and it wouldnt start. OK so problem sorted as such. Only when the guys tested both ECU's the one that now has the car working right, they were not happy with originally. It came from Barry McCanns 81 and I do wonder has it been remapped in any way making it useless for my car perhaps, i dunno. The ECU that doesnt seem to be working was the one from my car which had blown capacitors but was repaired. Maybe it is just not right. So essentially its the ECU. It was giving the same code 14 it has been since I got the car, and thats the first time we have found something wrong. The only other thing that could be contributing to issues could be the injectors or the wiring for the injectors.

So are there any ECU experts in Ireland? Like somewhere I can send 1 or both ECU's and they can check every parameter? Or failing that can I go an alternative route without spending thousands on a whole new ECU system??

Ok on to the pics ha

I bought Dan Mooreheads pink GTR's and got them today. Comparasin pics below, what does everyone think? (nevermind the name, more the size etc.) Gram lights are 17 x 9.5. GTR's are 18 x 9.5. Personally I think 18's are much better, but Gram lights in 18's would be better again!

Ok so a little update, my parts arrived from Toyota:
Full set of connectors to plug the loom into the coils
A plastic piece that has something to do with the recirc valve lol
Rubber donut to hold the prop in place
Fuel pressure regulator
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/a3a8c38b.jpg

And out came the old donut, in pieces!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/8fa13faa.jpg

Now its totally different to drive, its not clunky at all really, the diff does clunk but not too badly, just the usual. The back end feels so much more precise under acceleration. It has dropped the prop slightly so it was hitting the exhaust a bit. I hammered the bejasus out of the exhaust hangers today but its still slightly touching under hard acceleration, i'll sort it at the weekend.

Otherwise its running sweet now, I have to get the boost gauge going again, i think it's been plugged out or disconnected or something. I had to raise it to meet the insurance assessor today with regards the damage on the bumper. I also had to take off the rotas. So thats done, pinks are now back on, shes as low as it can go now and I fitted (badly i might ad!) a Jimmy Up sticker!

Nah never got fronts. If I was to put GTR's on the front they would have to be 17's, i couldnt run it that low on 18's. And I love the staggared look. Plus after looking at 81's on the net for years I promised myself id never run a full set of the same rims on it! My ideal setup is like 18x10J low offset equips or Veilside Andrews on the back and 17x9.5 GTR's on the front....

Some day!

Thanks Mick. Good to say hello. Your pal with the civic is comming over here tomorrow, we're gonna take a spin to the cinema :D

@ Famous jh. No rich, SERIOUSLY rich!!

On my way to Mick the car started mis-firing in Maynooth. I pulled over and tell it run like shit for a minute. It cleared out after a bit and off I went. On the way back I got to Barberstown Castle and it started again, I didnt have a spot to pull over so I drove to Barretts and stopped at their entrance. As I put on the handbreak I saw a flash, looked in the mirror and saw flames litterally higher than the car  Me and the dog fookin legged it lol. I checked the fuel gauge and Clane to Maynooth (13km) used at least 15 quids worth of fuel, hence the flames. Left the car off for 15 mins till the flames and fire in the exhaust went, started it and it cleared out in a few seconds and off we went. Started again at Liffey Valley so I pulled over straight away, left it off for a minute then it was fine. And grand to get home.

So the coils are fine, the pump is new, the wiring is ok, the ignitor is ok, which leaves the injectors and the ECU unless im missing something else. Im not happy with the ECU but a guy has put up 540 1J injectors on DW so hopefully that will eliminte everything bar the ECU if I get them.

Not like that you don't!!

Thanks for the offer man. Stevo on Dw has a set of 540's for £120 sure it would probably cost as much just to have mine checked. They are low impedence so I need a 2jz resistor pack though.... Whatever that is lol

anyway I don't think it's the injectors I'm very confident it's that bastard ECU. The auto electrician told me that that ECU was playing up when it got hot. And since the car has been running it's been faultless. But only after the weekend I put it back ipbehind the glove box.... Before it was just hanging out... So maybe that was litterally true... Because it was roasted when I checked it

The Spirant Chaser

My favorite car ever, so fucking mean!! So i'm going to have a go to make a JZX81 version, something i've never seen but I reckon will work well.

later and i'm getting there. The bolt on arches (80mm rear + 60mm front), standard rear bumper and wind deflectors. Missed a roof spoiler but I will be getting the next one that comes up for sale :D

I now need wheels. I know i will be able to squeeze on negative offset 13.5's with the arches  so when I can afford it i'll do my best! Front's will be staggered so 17's stay but i'll go a wider

The car will be two tone also :)

Oh and I picked this up too :D

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0328.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a59/Fredsballs/Toyota%20Mark%20II%20JZX81/IMG_0329.jpg

I also got adaptor brackets so I can fit some Nissan 4 pots up front and a set of Sard 540cc injectors. Just need to get them tested and a resistor pack as they are low impedence.

In the mean time I need to sort this ECU issue once and for all, but I might have a solution this week....

Have a look at the pic of the day thread, someone just put pics of that Chaser with a kitted rear... €2k? If the rears could be got for €1k I would when I'm getting wheels but just now I dont have the cash to spend on them, my "banger fund" is being kept until I get the running issues sorted incase cost go up on that. I have my eyes on different wheels I like though but will have to be ex-japan i'd imagine

Huh is this the chit chat thread? :D

Yea Greg, have heard lots of good stuff about him and of the several people I spoke to he's the only one who comes across as a decent bloke and that actually seems to want the business

Good to hear Chuck, I did wonder would you be better to go Holset, everyone seems to be jumping on them and they seem cheap enough too!

Dozzler, you mean me? Thanks! gonna try and get more front camber, lots more, but I will need adjustable stuff first :)

He's very well known for building engines up north, think most of the UDC lads use him aswell... Fair play getting sorted and not following the herd with the tuner
