View Full Version : Si's 180sx Build
Hey,
Thought i'd get started on a build thread. The cars was fairly clean and surprisingly healthy 180 I bought off a mate for good money. Was pretty much standard when I got it, only really shitty coilovers in it.
I put a few bits and pieces on to get me through last year while I was learning to slide.. When I got this car, I had never driven a rear wheel drive car before  So my first day out in mondello was stupidly embarrassing to say the least, finishing up with a wanked clutch early  Thereafter, I made it out to nearly every drift day in mondello and the M1 drift days and pushed myself and the car every chance I had to learn new things. Safe to say.. i'm addicted!
To get me through last year, I added the basic bits and pieces.. Front mount, manifold, elbow, straight through exhaust, gtr fuel pump, oil cooler, boost controller, hydro, gauges, bucket seat, steering wheel. I left the body completely as is, because I knew i'd be creaming tyre walls and bails.
With the boost up at a bar on the standard t25g she had plenty of poke, 3rd gear not a bother.
This is how I got it, the back and passenger side door had crash damage and the front had slight damage

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/102_0754.jpg
THE PLAN
Fully rebuild the engine boring her it out to an SR22
rb25 gearbox conversion
Get adj coilovers and all the arms set-up. Map on a Nistune board
Get the roll cage in
Some kit, over fenders etc
First things first, never bothered to take out the sound deadening last year, so out it came with alot of cursing and chiselling

Removed a lot of the excess weight out of the doors, leaving just the rail holding the windows up.

Last week, I picked up a z32, r33 rotors and callipers, braided turbo and water lines.
I Started putting the brakes on the weekend, drilling the discs (discs or disks?) out to accommodate my 4 stud hubs. I realized I needed the wheel spacers to clear new callipers, so didn't get them on just yet.
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/2011-09-30212235.jpg
Ordered all the sr23 gear the weekend. Everything but the Brian Crower Cams, retainers and springs, which will be hopefully next month
CP Pistons 90.0mm/ 9.0:1
Darton Sleeves 86-90mm
Eagle Chromoly Forged Rods
ACL Race Main & Rod Bearings
Thrust Washers
OE Timing Chain kit
OEM Complete Engine Gasket kit
Intake & Exhaust valve stems
ARP Head Studs
ARP Rod Bolts
ARP Main Studs
Any way fuck me that took a while to do.. i'll add on as I progress with it

Was thinking the same lads. Just happened to have it there and it seemed the cheapest option.. A gt3071 would really be the job. Just don't want to be going power mad. Suppose I'll see how i'm fixed before I get the map, haven't even started and the wallets empty! :)

sound Joe, make sure you get out yourself next year
why sr22 if you dont want mad power?...that turbo will be under big pressure at the 380 mark....Best off luck anyway man ;)

Was initially going to just put the 86mm pistons in but then I was thinking when everythings apart its worth it for the extra few quid getting the block bored for the 90mm. I'm sure they'll also be a bit more torque with 22 aswell
Ye i'm told 360 is pushing max flow with gtss. Dead right, bigger turbo..
Few bits arrived...

Haven't got much time with college and work to get up the garage. Will update as soon as I get something done. The r33 brakes still need to be sorted aswell
Just a quick update.. no pics.
Ordered solid subframe bushes - the ones that bring the subframe closer to the body
Stripped everything but the engine, need to get the lift down to the garage the weekend and it'll come out
On the hunt for a rb25 box if anyone has, PM me
PS I just realized the 90mm pistons I got are for an sr23, dunno why I had 22 in my head, so all good :)
college and a project car ...what about sleeping and eating ?
good work looks like it will be a very well setup car

Cheers man. Haven't been out sliding since the last balbriggan day.. went through japfest and 2 rounds of prodrift spectating... dying to get back out there!!
best of luck man . should be sweet
best of luck with the build keep the pics coming
Got moving on stripping everything from the block. Took lots of pictures.. but mainly for us to remember how everything goes back together.
TDP are fair busy in the machine shop for the next 3 weeks so the block won't be bored for another while.
Going to start working on the rear subframe next, arms and subframe bushes, cut the the wheel well out for the fuel cell.
Theres just not enough hours in the day and it makes ya feel like you're not progressing.. mainly stripping!
I have been searching around for inspiration.. this is what I have in mind, maybe in yellow or red. The kit is fairly cheap.. Origin styling front and rear with origin aggressive skirts with a small boot spoiler, not quite rocket bunny.. bit more subtle
Any opinions/input welcome
cheers,
Si
Block ready to go for machining. Glad I decided to go with the complete rebuild.. big end bearings were on the way out :)
Got an engine stand as well, makes things so much easier

Story lad this is cool build, ul have some power or response with all the work gone into it! Got block bored, head and block skimmed in Westwood eng 300-350 I tink. Sure everytin on car costs a ball of money. Keep up great work
Small update:
The block, head, liners and oil pump are now over at TDP. Expecting to have the bits back at the end of January :) So nothing more will be happening with the engine till then.
I also picked up TDP alloy solid subframe bushings, by far the cheapest i've seen around and serious quality.
A few more bits have been ordered (officially broke for Christmas!)
Adjustable arms, rocker stoppers, cams and ACT 6 Puck Sprung clutch
Cheers,
Si
Check this shit out.. temp outside the car on the way up the garage

Got some mint BC BR coilovers off Darragh.. fully adjustable aswell.
Spent two evenings cleaning them down. Here's one of the rears clean
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/2012-01-29201659.jpg
Just about have the rear finished now. Subframe now has alloy subframe bushings, and anything that couldn't be fitted with a spherical bearing is polybushed (Bushes are a cunt!)

Subframe back up
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/2012-02-02211148.jpg
Coilovers in, need to adjust the height etc at some stage
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/2012-02-02222224.jpg
Also ordered progress group front and rear sway bars, should sort the roll out n allow adjustment for different tracks.
Went to put back on my r33 rear brakes.. but can't find the bolts to put the calipers to the knuckle anyway.. typical! If anyone has them please pm me. Also one of the wheel bearings is on the way out so PM me.
Cool man shaping up now !

Took a few pics before I left the garage the weekend. Will get a few more when I get to adjusting the coilover height.

50mm overfendors should hug the wheels perfectly. Arms are all over the place at the moment! :)
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee382/si_berry/2012-02-15231725.jpg
First time cutting arches and pretty happy with how they turned out. Still a bit ruff but they'll be hidden :) Gained a good bit of room to drop the back down more.

Picking up engine block tomorrow and car heading down to Shane Bradley the weekend for the cage. Aiming to try get for testing paddys day.. will see how funds are!
Left TDP earlier with an empty wallet :) :), these two pieces of metal (absolute mint job!) and plenty of useful knowledge from Robbie. Hopefully start putting the engine back together the weekend.
One car i'm dying to see finished is wez's.. had a quick peek at it.. going to be without a doubt the dogs dangles when finished!

If there is a Friday practice i'll do it, if not I won't. Need a practice day to get used to it and play about with things.
Think i'm pushing it to try get it mapped and aligned before the end of the week and out for Mondello this Sunday. Theres a few stupid bits I need.. JIC to metric adaptor for the turbo oil feed line, triangle mani to turbo gasket and an alloy rad.
Might try fit a few hours in goldstone

They're BC 264's, with springs, retainers and fresh stems.
Few pics I had on the phone. Pretty much ready for map on 23rd in TDP
Needs a good alignment big time. Wheel is hitting the tension rod, possibly could get a small bit more when it's done.
Just in the corner of the pick one of the lads is working on time attack civic.. now has an evo engine in it :)
