View Full Version : Scooby wagon Project
Just thought i'd share this here with you good folk, it's my 96 WRX wagon i got last year, i swaped my eg6 for it and i have to say i love it,
anyway here goes, 1st off i have a few pics of it just after i got it

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/new036.jpg
Spec on it was:
unknown shit looking wheels
poxy headlights
fucked front lip
HKS BOV
Hks turbo timer
K&N filter
and carbon bonnet
now the first thing i did was scrap the wheels, i managed to pick up a set of ssr type c wheels for 200 euro one of them had a slight buckle in it but i got that fixed also they are in bad need of a respray

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/0e8121a3-1.jpg
next on the list was to get a new set of brake disc's, new front lip, new head lights and a nice exhaust, so i ordered all of the above and got cracking with the upgrade's
while doing the disc's i gave the front calipers a sanding and a lick of paint, few pics here now of the brakes getting done

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6197.jpg
and just a before and after with the wheel on
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6170.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6199.jpg
now with that done i set about binning the old headlights and fitting the new black crystal kit i got and also the new jun style lip
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6453.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6207.jpg
next on the list was the TSL back box i got off a mate of mine
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6129.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/DSCF6127.jpg
and an up to date pic of how she looked after all that work
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/f8274a06.jpg
that was it then for a few months till i saved up again to do a full respray on the bitch, i have a build thread on another site so im just going to copy and paste :afro:

Are you converting this to RWD and turning it into a drift car??
started on the respray last night and Got a shit load of work done, we started about half 6 and by half 8 we had it all striped down, we then discovered that we where out of welding wire so the sill had to wait till today we cracked on with a few repairs and have the drivers side now ready for primer :) also we got the wheel arches rolled, way easyer than I thought it was going to be, not bad for one nights work, heres some pics of the progress
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork002-2.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork005-2.jpg
you can see Eric hard at work in the pic above lol
now finaly got the car in and had a good walk around it making note of all the dents that we need to do, next is just some walk around shots
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork008-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork009.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork012.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork017.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork019.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork022.jpg
now it was time to get the hands dirty and get her striped down, we started at the front end and worked our was around the car till we ended up with her looking like this
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork026.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork024.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork025.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork027.jpg
with the car striped down quicker than we thought ( took an hour and a half ) we cracked on with getting some repair work done, 1st off was the rust on the arch then we rolled both arches on the drivers side i wasn't lookin forward to doing this but i was supprised it only took 10 minutes for each arch so happy days, then we put a light filler skim on the little dents all up along the sides and then we called it a night
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork030.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork031.jpg
Front arch before rolling
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork033.jpg
and after rolling
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork034.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork038.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork039.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork040.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork041.jpg
still a bit of sanding to be done on the inner part of the arch, will be going back it it later today and will have an update tomorrow
Are you converting this to RWD and turning it into a drift car??
nope keeping it the way it is
Day 2 update:
picked up some supplies yesterday to keep us going till next week and we cracked on with the work again last night, this is how we got on
the plan for lastnights work was to finish up the filler work on the drivers side and get it in primer so thats what i got stuck into, below you will see it all sanded down and masked up for the primer to go on
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork069.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork070.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork072.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork071.jpg
after a good clean with panel wipe and a good tacking i started putting down the 1st of 4 coats of high build primer and when all done this is how she looked
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork074.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork073.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork075.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork077.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork078-2.jpg
while i was at this Eric was working away on the far side on the rusty sill, a few months ago we where going to sort out a bit of rust on the wheel arch just to get it through the NCT then re do it properly when i was doing the respray, here the small bit we wanted to do
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork001.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork002.jpg
we striped off the side skirt so we would not damage it when welding only to find this
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork003.jpg
at some time in it's life the car got a new 1/4 panel and who ever put it on never sealed it up and it leaked and just rotted away right on the weld line, when we seen this we straight away said this is going to need a new sill section, we welded in a few bit of sheet metal just for a bit of strength untill we got all the parts needed to do it right, so with a bit of welding and filler we left it this way untill now
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork025-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork024-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork058.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork059.jpg
the 1st thing to do now was take the rear door off and get cutting and drill out all the spot welds
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork045.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork046.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork050.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork052.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork064-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork063-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork062-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork061-1.jpg
with all the cutting and drilling the section just more or less fell off
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork065.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork066.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork067.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork068.jpg
this is where we gave up as it was getting late, as you can see the rot has gone in a good bit so we will be doing the inner section now as well as the outer section to tonight should see all the rot gone and the new bits tacked it and lined up ready for welding
fair play to ya bandit. always prefered the wagons.

seen this before. and thank god someones repainting it! bonnet looked hideous. so whats the story with the drivetrain? swapping a legacy rwd setup? should be a cool project!
engine and drive staying as is, and im not a fan of the bonnet but for the moment i will be keeping it as is just in the new colour untill i get a standard one, im not going wasting paint on doing the whole thing is it will do for now
am i missing some thing here or is this a 4wd project on driftireland??? and you just said that it will be staying that way.........................................

and the problem is??
yeah it's 4wd and it will be staying like this, it's the family car that im doing so work on so im not going mad on it, i would love to do something like a RWD conversion, but i rather wait till im in the positiont to buy and run a 2nd car then get something RWD,
i just thought i'd share what im up to as some people might be interested in it, and those who are not interested why bother posting, just pass it by and leave it at that

Dude I think what he is trying to say this is DRIFTireland (rwd forum) and anybody who would be interested in your build would be on the Dtd forum where it would fit in, but hey you solider on sweetheart ;)
ah i know what you mean, i enjoy going through build threads and there is a lot of very good ones on here that i spend hours looking at, so i just said feck it i'l post my one up as well, if one person thinks its a good read sure its all good, so i'l solider on and if it needs to be deleted because it's not drift related its not the end of the world
Lads chill, dano is cool, but to be honest i know wat they mean get sexy boy darragh to bang it in general chat or sumtn for people to gander at and learn from :-)
moved to members cars pics!
hooray for subaru noises!
Cheers Chris
and sorry for any bother peter
Update time
we are really making good progress with this now, we have the rust gone and new panels welded in and more or less ready to go,
Wednesday's work:
Eric started off where he left off the following day and chopped out more rotted panels, he took the inner skin off to find more rust
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork045-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork046-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork047-1.jpg
he cut out a section and cleaned it all up them welded in a cut out fron the new sill section we had,
here he is grinding down the welds and then primed up and panel sealer put on as well
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork056-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork065-1.jpg
now it was time to line up the inner panel and get it tacked up and then weld it in
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork078-3.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork076-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork084.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork087.jpg
while Eric was at all this i was working on the far side blocking the primer down to get it ready for paint and heres the result
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork072-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork073-1.jpg

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork071-1.jpg
we then called it a night and locked up
Thursday's Work:
we stared off thursday nights work by getting the welds cleaned up on the sill while Eric had his hands full with that i got cracking on the boot, i wanted to shave off the lock so i fiberglassed the inside of it and skimed the out side with filler then primed it up
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork050-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork049-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork061-3.jpg
i also filled it the headlight washers on the front bumper as i hated the look of them and it really gave the bumper a real smooth look and also primed it
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork053-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork054-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork060-4.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork059-2.jpg
i also primed up the rear passenger door as we took it off to to the sill
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork062-2.jpg
That was really all we got done that night and plus we wanted to take an early night as we worked till just about 12 every night so far
Friday's Work:
I got the rear bumper in primer on friday but have no pics so you'l have to take my word for it lol
While waiting on stuff to arive Eric got cracking on the front wing and door while i got sanding on the primed parts not really much of an update as we just spent the night sanding, saturday was more or less the same and we took sunday off
Monday's Work:
Same really again on monday just primer to be rubbed down while Eric was cutting and trying on the new sill section
boot ready for paint now as well as the passenger door and both bumpers
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork089.jpg
with most of the cutting done Eric was ready to try up the new section, we riveted the new bit in just to try the gaps and in the 1st go as you will see it looks spot on, the bottom part needs to pull out a wee bit
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork090.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork091.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork093.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork094.jpg
thats it for now, we are going to be at it again later so i will update as soon as i can
Right people as of last night the wagon is done apart for needing a good clean on the inside she's ready to go :)
in this update im just continuing from wher i left off, i am not posting the final job as yet as i want to save that for who ever is at heatwave, it's a very hard colour to get right in a photo so it's best to be seen in person
Right we left off last time with the sill tacked in, we got it all welded up the next day and the 1st skim of filler was put on
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork066-2.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork075-2.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork076-2.jpg
while this was going on i was priming the rest of the parts and re sealing the back panel
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork063-3.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork065-2.jpg

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork079-1.jpg
again i had these bit's done Eric was done with the sill so more primer was needed
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork086-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork084-1.jpg
we called it a night and left it at that, the next day i was on my own as Eric was in work for the day so i got stuck into sanding the rest of the primed parts and building the car back up so i could drive it to the body shop i rented for the weekend
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork087-1.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork088-1.jpg

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork090-1.jpg
at this stage i was getting a bit excited as it wouldn't of been to long till it was all painted
i arived in the body shop and started to strip it all back down and get the shell into the oven and painted that night before i left

and one of the man himself Eric
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork092-1.jpg
while mixing the paint up me and one of the lad's had a yap about the colour and did 2 test cards one with a grey primer base like the car was and one with a black base and i have to say the black base just made the colour pop that bit more so i went in and put down a black base on the shell
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork099.jpg
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/scoobywork098.jpg
now as i said above i dont want to show off the final colour but i'l give a little teaser pic for now and will update after heatwave when i get the chance to take some good proper pics

sorry for the late update i'v been mad busy catching up on work that built up while doing this
right we left off last time with the car in the matt black base coat, i was really liking the matt look but i couldn't bring myself to do it so i cracked on, here she is all fresh and still tacky, the bright light in the oven really brings out the colour

we called it a night and let the shell dry over night and came in the next morning and gave it a blast in the oven just to make sure it cured all the way, i then did the doors and bumpers, when these where done Eric showed up to get the parts on while i finished up with all the nick nack bit's like door handels and stuff like that, all together it took 3 stints in the oven to get done and a total of 5-6 hours painting time inc baking so im well pleased with that
few pics of her just about built back up to be driven to Erics plase to start the final steps

http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/danny2b/scooby/photo4.jpg
so now we are in the final steps to getting her all done so 1st off was a full wet sand with 1500 grit paper to get any small bits of dust that may have got stuck in the paint, i have to say that the oven we prob one of the cleanest ones i'v used and i counted prob 20 or so bit's of dust in the whole car but i still gve the whole thing a full sand down....sure why not lol
in this pic you can see the right hand side is the side rubbed down and the left is still shiney
