    Default S14 Engine Problems HELP!!

    well lads,
im currently buildin another track car i have a 1990 200sx shell and i fitted a 1998 s14a engine with jap ecu and loom!! now i have the engine in and ive done all the wiring and its running but heres my prob!!
The car idles fine but when i rev the engine up abit it starts hunting and wont let me clearly pass the revs, its like its missin but on a big scale!!!the coilpacks are sending spark to all 4 cylinders.heres what ive found that could be causes but let me know what you think!!

1)Spark plugs keep coverin over with carbon soot even after a clean, that means its runnin rich i guess but why??

2)Im still running a standard ca18 fuel pump on the sr20 engine, would that be a big enough cause to stop it revin out?

3)Think poss the water temp could have wrong signal, where is it located on the engine just so im sure??

4)I havent an exhaust for the car yet the lack of back pressure from that wouldnt cause it to run like that??

Any one have any ideas id like to know need it going asap cant think of much at the moe i think its air or fuel dats the prob but dont know sbodys well!!

Heres a clip but not great.

I'd also suggest to recheck the splices to the ecu as per John Bennett's conversion manual. If the wire colours don't match (which might be the case as you are using different ecu) it will give you trouble as it did on mine when I had a hybrid s14/s14a ecu (late s14). Also NVCS (Nissan's vvt) might be an issue here as it's not activated as it should but not sure on that.

You don't have to change engine temp sensor for the conversion. You only have to swap the CA sensor for the gauge on the dash which is located below the air inlet to the plenum (think you're right that it's the one with brown plug - single wire), next to engine temp sensor one - yellow iirc.

The strange thing is that the rev counter isn't working for you because it should (clocks are ok they worked with CA). This, and the fact why the fuel pump is not starting itself (you have it on manual switch) suggest me that the ECU connections either at the ecu or the wires going to it aren't great. Check all with multimeter as per manual. Also, You need to swap the speed sensor from CA box to make speedo work properly.

AFM would be my first suspect, ignition timing second, borrow a proper ECU with loom if possible - it really can give a lot of headache.
    Open exhaust shouldn't cause problems.

I have a PDF of s14 workshop manual, can send it to you if needed. There's loads of troubleshooting procedures there to check out.

The fact is what is it like when it works......

if you unplugged the AFM and nothing changed then id be looking at that, maybe there is a break in a wire somewhere you cant see??
