I have looked into building one of these. Have one that records position and datalogs engine parameters like RPM, throttle position, oil pressure etc.
Looked at doing drift angle, and its not easy, actually its very difficult. Using a compass like they have, can give inaccurate results unless the compass is very expensive, hitting a bump could cause more or less angle to be recorded as g forces mess up most of them.
If the system overcomes all the issues, id say the cost will be huge for it. And at the end of it, would the judges really be able to judge an event if they were looking at a map with a moving block drifting the track, as thats all the computer is using.
I think its cool as a driver aid, shows if you are taking the right line, and where you could improve, lap to lap. But for drifting here, its not too useful, the majority of the tracks are too short for it, 5 hz update of position is not great.
