Default Caught up with Dean Kearney ahead of round 3

Dean “Karnage” Kearney is a name most of you will be familiar with. He’s proudly flying the Irish flag drifting in the good ‘ol US of A. Ronan Costello managed to corner him and grab an interview for Freshfix. Here’s how it went..

Freshfix: For the few that don’t already know you, tell us about your background and how you have found yourself as a pro drifter in one of the finest drift competitions out there – Formula Drift.

Dean: I got into drifting when I was 16 years old as a means to affordable Motorsport, which was fun yet not too restrictive in classes or limited in power, that appealed to me to have the freedom to modify as my budget and skill level grew and also the freedom to develop the car myself without the expense of the car being prepared and run at events by race teams, as seen in Irish Rallying.

Fast forward 3 seasons, and I became the Prodrift Super Series champion in my Maxxis Tires S13. With some great guidance, I landed my dream drive in the Formula Drift finale at Irwindale 2009, only 12 months after witnessing the Red Bull Drift World Championship which at the time, was the best drift event I had ever seen. The US competition had become a firm goal to me in establishing my race career. In fact, I had committed so much time, money and desire to get into FD for 2010 that basically I had to make it and get a team drive, or I would have had to sit out European competition as my personal resources dried up.

Luckily, I had a great sponsor. V-LEDS come on board and my ookie season in the V-LEDS S14 was confirmed. It’s now 2011 and look! Driving alongside my drifting hero Sam Hübinette as my team mate in the SHR team! When do I wake up!?!
