If it was bad petrol would that make the oil level increase and smell of petrol mate?

if it is petrol thats getting into your oil it could only be piston rings gone or hole in piston or cracked block which is allowing the fuel into your sump. if its not petrol , check your head gasket it could be letting your coolant into the sump.
start with a compression test and that will let you know if im on the right track.
