I'm only getting around to doing this now, but here's a few pic's
i took of the work myself and Bob did, turbo-charging Tim's MX5..
First up is the Intercooler bracket Bob made
On the car
And bumper in place!
Next Bob fabricated a Turbo Elbow and Downpipe from scratch..
Tim supplied the flange and Bob made the rest from sheet steel
using a grinder and welder, as our equipment at the time was limited!
Turbo Elbow complete!
Wedges tacked to form the bend needed. As there was so little room in the
MX, the downpipe had to have several bends to allow it to fit down the bulkhead
and between the tunnel and gearbox!
Fully welded!
And here it is on the car..
Fit's perfectly!
It's hard to show how tight it was but it fitted without any interference or risk
of hitting the car, engine or gearbox so happy days!!![]()
Bob then welded a flange to the end of the Downpipe once we were happy
that it was in the right place!
Just about fits between the tunnel and gearbox!
Next he made a reducer to fit the exhaust flexi-pipe
And then welded the middle section of the exhaust, including the bung for the
Wide-band Sensor
Bob welding an exhaust bracket in place
And the exhaust system complete, late into the night!
Here's the Turbo Actuator bracket Bob made earlier!
Here's a few close up shot's for those thinking about a similar project..
All ready for mapping!
And head of fabrication, Bob (AKA: Bob the builder!) admiring his handywork!
Lastly, a short video of its initial start-up!
Turbo MX5 first start up - YouTube
This Bob fella seems a very usefull character!! Thats some impressive work, fairplay, not bad for a hairdressers car i suppose![]()
