    i was thinking of goin e36 bm engine because iv heard of it been done before (and my own engine is on its last legs) and was told twas kinda straight forward, but didnt know what was actually involved.
    id like to keep it bmw under the bonnet aswell though
    i suppose the easiest thing would be e30 325 running gear.

    roughly what's your budget for the engine swap?

    Lad here is putting 325 E36 engine into 316 E30, its supposed ot be a very easy conversion, i myself wouldnt bother. dont think the power gain would be enough to merit the swap but then again if the E30 is light it might be worth it

    yeah so, for 2-300 you'd get a 318is engine alright

    i suppose my best bet is try and get on to da lad that did the conversion himself nd get the full story

    seriously man, get onto e30owners.com you'll get all the info you need and more over there with multiple people that have done the conversion already being regular users

    just did some looking around for you over there, and i found this:

    Differences between e30 and e36 M42 (318iS engine)

    Intake plenum, exhaust manifold, lower sump and gearbox ratios

    But if you have those bits off an E30 iS, it's a straight swap
