Yep that is correct, You would get away with a standard ESC if you keep the GT - Tuned motor

No you would need an ESC no matter what motor you use, what I mean is that you would need a racing spec ESC if you used this motor. It's just when people use racing motors, it is important that they use an ESC that is capable of operating with the motor such that they do not melt/fry the ESC. I can point you in the right direction of ESC if you'd like.
