Thread: ae86 misfire!

  1. #1

    Question ae86 misfire!

    Hey lads
Got an ae86 the other day and few small probs with it
When driving it runs fine untill you rev it till bout 6k rpm if just starts die'in out and misfiring like its only running on 3 cylinders and most of the time just cuts out after a moment or two
Then when you start it up again straight away it will run fine until you rev it up to bout 6k or more rpm again
Dont know much about ae86's but thinking tis a stupid elec prob Coil maybe?

Engine is standard 4age. Tis also ticking over at bout 1.5-2k rpm and a right petroly smell when tis running

    Cheers

could be anything mate, its ticking over to high so tps could be faulty common problem, should be @ 900 warm, they tick over high cold dont mind that

check the distributer cap isnt melted another common problem
    are the plugs oily?
timing sounds wrong aswell check that with a lamp, belt might even have slipped a tooth

hard tell without looking at it

What would they tick over at when cold usually?
The tps's are feckers to set up arent they
    Distributer cap is fine
Took the plugs out and cleaned them, they were black enugh tips were not oily, threads of them were abit oily allright though

Will try and check timing belt timing and ignition timing tomorrow

    Cheers

they could tick over around 1500 untill warm, once warm it should go down if not try adjust it...
cant set up tps they are just fucked get another
is it ticking over at a steady rpm warm or goin up and down? if goin up and down tps defo wanked
change the plugs then only a few euro, the rocker covers can allow oil leak down into the plug but unless there was alot its not it...
the belts can break and not damage the engine so might have slipped a tooth, could be timing...

but also distributers themselves can go and coils but id start with timing

Ya i know about the tps they have to be adjusted when changing them unless you just get a complete throttle body
Tis ticking over at a steady rpm allright though
Wanted to try and save the plugs as they were iridum tiped onesha
what heatrange plugs are the best?

Will do abit of investigating into the timing tomorrow and get a set of plugs

    Cheers lad

sounds like it is the dizzy, but as stated above by sc, could be a few things that give you that problem.

i`d start with the ignition timeing if its def not the tps.. no harm re setting it anyway.
    only take 2 mins.

Surely there isnt much to go wrong with the distributer itself though bar the timing bien off?

worn teeth, rotar tip been worn causeing misfire at high revs...

cause they rev so high and up irish feckers love the sound of a screaming 4age i think you`ll find we can break almost ever part of a 4age engine
