Thread: Side skirts

  1. #1

    Default Side skirts

One thing thats always bugged me about so called "drift style kits " for cars is that they always seem to have these big huge side skirts that go all the way to the ground ....

Having gone to a few drifting days and having seen lads wrestle with trying to get a jack in under the fuckers , i have to wonder...Why?
If a car is built to be drifted , the logical assumption is that its gonna need new tyres quite regularly so why would you put yourself through the hassle of having to squeeze a jack in under these monstrosities and not just fit normal higher skirts.....

or is just a case of form over function ??

Do many of ye have these large skirts on , and how do ye get around the problem ??

I think calling it "style" is stretching it a bit. Those hovercraft type kits look really dated now IMO.

More people seem to be going for a more subtle OEM type look these days instead of the fibreglass abortions that have been around for the last few years, which is great.

Each to their own I suppose..

just get a decent jack, one that will reach from the rear bumper to the diff casing, or else most people make a box and weld it to the sill in certain points for jacking, its handy done and leaves gettin under the car so much handier,

    or

the simple ole block of wood and drive up on it although depending on your kit etc.. you mite not be even able to get the bumper or skirts over the block.. it all depends on how easy you want to make work for yourself,

I'd have to agree , they had their time and place i suppose ..like flares.
As you said yourself, sure if they float your boat , put em on your own car
I know for a fact that i wont be putting em on my yoke anyway

Jack it up by the diff or get yourself some diy ramps.
I think theyre worth it for the trouble, depends on the car but it suits most imo

all our cars are stupid low...lol

half an hour makes a jacking point between the two chasie legs at the back with a bit of 2" box and a welder. one of the first things that should be done to a new shell.

for handyness i use a small two tonne jack and i have a black line drawen on it so i know how far in i need to go to be under the jacking point, yes lazyness not even looking under to see if its in the right place but i havent missed the spot yet, il never have another drift car without one made.
