if you hav he car on a lift you will be able to move the prop shaft a certain amount before the back wheels will start to move, that bit of play is the backlash, and if thats not reset the way it should be it could make a mince of your diff, just incase you where gonna try the job yourself just give yeah the heads up

Look under your car, you see a big metal thing with the propshaft going into it and 2 driveshafts coming out of it, thats your rear diff casing. Its where you pour your diff oil in/out

The propshaft turns a gear housed inside the casing, thats called the pinion

The pinion turns a much bigger gear, thats called the crownwheel.

The crownwheel is bolted on a round metal thing, thats called a diff.
The number of teeth on the crownwheel and pinion is what defines your final drive ratio (diff ratio)
If there is 13 teeth on the pinion, and 48 teeth on the crownwheel, your ratio is 3.69:1. (48 divided by 13) so, if you rotate your propshaft 3.69 times, your wheels will turn once.
The gears are a matching pair, if you mismatch them, you will end up not driving very far, and making alot of iron filings!
