Race Track Design

Heres a hypothetical situation for ye who are bored and feeling creative,
sort of following on from a conversation that popped up on another site a while back.

If you had a site, and where to build your own track on it for you and small group of others to slide on, how would you go about laying it out?
keeping it realistic, so no tunnels, loop the loops or stuff like that :p
but a reasonable sized track say in an area of 3 acres, how would you lay it out?

feel free to use pen and paper, ms paint, CAD or pasta and prit stick to sketch ideas out and it could be a single lay out or have multipal minor pieces of road to have 2 or more layouts in the one track as long as it was reasonable and within the rough size guidelines.

and as a rough idea, the area i was at when i thought about this was shapped something like this :

so try keep em within that sort of shape, i'll up load a few i done later.

I'll see if any of my CAD programmes is still working there and I'll do a few.

If not, I'll just use good oul paint:p

Wouldn't mind seeing how much something like this would cost as I have alot of 3 acres around the place at home:D

i done a couple in CAD r14 here and i cant figure out how to change the format from dwg to, well, anything at all that i can upload.

I was tinking of the same ting lol may giv this ago me thinks

okay, figured out a way to do it using bmp file instead.
heres one that i based on a 30ft wide track surface and
i make it 250ftx360ft roughly in overall area with the straight being 220ft long.
i didnt remove the construction lines on this one just to show how i done it for anyone woundering.
i worked it so the straight wwould run along the top line of the outline with the first turn being in the corner

Is this a drift track or time attack track or what ??

whatever you want, but should be useable for a bit of sliding.
i've expanded on the one above by adding side roads to make more or less a circle out of the two turns at either end of the straight and the large turn so it could be used for sliding and say banger racing or whatever.

Right I just made 1 and well it looks shite but said I'd throw it up anyway , not bothered putting anymore effort into it :p

ah, it doesnt matter, it's only for a bit of fun.
obviously the more detail the better, if anyone wants to go through the hassle of designing it in sketch up or building a model by all means work away.

i'll stick with paint and CAD.

if ya use circles to lay out your corners and then just draw straight lines between them, thats an easy way to go about it.

I know its not the shape of the field you were at but this is what I came up with.

Site is roughly 5 acres (525x400ft) The grey bit is the outside perimeter to fill up with gravel traps, spectator areas, pits or anything you want.

The area of the track itself is 3 acres and track width ranges from 20ft to 40ft. Main straight is about 300ft or 100m.
Could be used for drift, karting or anything really I suppose. Be alittle short for time-attack

The black track is the main full length track. the other colours are alternative tracks that can be opened from moving barriers or tyres around the place.
Light green bits are just plain old reliable grass :)

i decided on a few different lay outs that all needed different plots of land and came up with this when they are not overlapping eachother :D :D

thats the sort of thing i was thinking of,
i just like cad as i find it's easy to make it look like i know what i'm doing with it lol

heres the second one of the above track, mirrored and rotated to fit the area i had in mind, and i added the extra 2 roads in dashed lines to show the round track layout,
its still a uniform 30ft wide all the way around.

its open and all, and from what iv heard there is no way drifting is going to happen. the karts can be heard the other side of town

i didnt realise how big that track is. is that a scaled reprisentation of it?
it doesnt look that big in the ariel shot of it.

Fook sake. Pretty fecking retarded building a track with hopes of being to International standards and then only being allowed to race around in fecking go-karts!!!

which is a pitty, the photos of the track looked savage! :(

Noise is the main thing, widing the track woulnt be as big of an issue...

That tracks only up the road from me....! Not a hope of us drifting there.....! Still only 1 track.......!

whats needed is a spot out away from houses, beside a petrol station to get support from local business (and petrol) and somewhere reasonably enclosed so the sound isn't as bad.:D

this is in the middle of nowhere just too open, more trees on other plots of land and the sound could be filtered :(

I wouldn't say its in the middle of nowhere its just off a main road....! There shoud buid a track in the most remote bogland they can think of like cavan or roscommon or offaly or somewhere....!

trouble is farmers are too big of a begrudging shower of cunts to get enough land off them to build one.

theres any amount of land around me that would be perfect for a full on F1 Circut.
theres plans for an airport to be built nearby too which is even more of a plus for the area for a track for noise reasons. i just can see a large scale track going ahead anytime soon.

even the talk of a dublin city track all but vanished quicker then it came about despite the untold millions it could potentially generate for the country.

Hey!!! I'm a farmer and would love to build a track but I know there would be uproar the minute I put a nail on a planning permission notice :(
Its just the typical Irish mentality of anything different and new is bad and getting hung up on all the negative points before even thinking about the benefits.


F1 Gran Prix used even be held down the Model-farm road and back in the Curraheen road and Victoria and Dennehys cross about 80-100 years go and was considered one of the best tracks in the championship and had one of the fastest straights.
Might have ended up being something like Monaco if it was still running today (well without all the fancy casinos and 100 ft yachts:o:p)

But then we wanted everything English out of the country so we could just play away GAA instead:rolleyes:

but yeah, anything ike that gets shot down and while the likes of gay and the wooly jumper brigade followers, anything to do with cars and entertainment is going to be flammed despite the good points.

this isn't really what i was looking to get into in this thread.
more justa fun thread for people to have a bit of creativeity if they are at nothing else. thats why i was saying a small sized track for the likes of a group of mates and didnt mentionlocations or any of that jazz.

it's all to see what people think are good track layouts for smaller tracks that wouldnt behigh speed tracks.

Yeah, I like my track anyway. Might do it better on CAD win I get it working.

How difficult I wonder would it be to just get planning for a small track such as the 3 or 4 acre ones of just the tar and few barriers and nothing much else.

well, if ya knew of a spot that had an old road on it already, then yu would just be refurbishing it so would be far easier then going from scratch.
