Are they for picking up bits of bareings mick, like a cotton baffled sump :o
I cant see any pics in micks post? damn. But yeh, some thick oil and a filter, and maybe get one of the lads, maybe Dr. Gem , to weld in some baffles in the sump roundwood style :D
Accusump maybe? http://www.accusump.com/
Not sure if the main cause is oil pressure loss for the CA or not, but they are recommended for the RB26.
rite i had my fair share of ca18s,, had one that was 321 brake,,my advice is a good oil cooler and good oil, make sure all the breathers in the head are good,, oil catch tank and if your budget allows acl bearings are a must
bla ha ha oh yea are plugs are cheepo so ya wont here the rattles
going by my ca which is a monster since the word go and has never seen rebuild, all i do is very regular oil changes and services. every 2.5k.. 3k AT MOST. and hell she gets hard abuse. no baffled sump etc etc...
edit; and always warm up and cool down...
best prevention is buy a sound one. simple.
baffled sump, gem will sort ya with that, oil cooler and good oil. then just abuse the fucker.
Without a strip down/inspection then you are playing russian roulette with any 15+ year old standard turbo charged engine.
If the engine is PROPERLY rebuild to manufacturer specs with new bearings(race ones not needed unless you plan on hiking the power a good bit.) rings, oil pump etc the you will have no issues once its tuned correctly and looked after properly.
There is nothing wrong with the design of the ca. they are not a weak engine, most at this age just have worn bearings, rings, pump, ring journals etc.
These are what cause failures, not any design flaw.
Put very simply, If its a good engine/properly rebuilt engine then it will last.
If its not either of the above, it won't last and no amount of baffled sumps or oil coolers will prevent that.
Take off the two cam covers, if they're covered in shite inside you have an engine in need of work, also the breather pipe going to the rocker cover from the r/h side of the engine is the worlds worst design and is prone to carboning up, if its blocked remove it and clean it, if you don't then it will be bye bye CA fairly quickly. The CA isnt a bad engine, the problem is that they're from a pre synthetic oil era and werent well serviced, the SR's are giving the same trouble now with big ends etc.
