Is it a turbo or non turbo ?
Do you know if the owner was using octane booster ?
if its hardly been driven or even if its now been driven on then i dont see what it'd be an issue. but id have it looked over by someone who knows them inside out
its a turbo (type ra), no octane booster.
had a look over on dtd and they say they need mapping or they blow rings and bearings
they blow rings and bearings even when mapped too though, its just the type of car they are, you never know whats going to happen with it till its too late.
so just get a scooby head to look over it and theyll know what its like, if still worried get a scope down to check the heads on the pistons for DET.
I wouldn't touch it anyway. I know the Sti's are supposed to be stronger than the WRX models, but I still wouldn't drive one unless it has been mapped. My brother put two engines into his Irish Impreza turbo after drving them without mapping and using octane booster.
Also if it has ever done any messing in it's life then expect it to be down on compression on piston number 3.
yeah im having serious thoughts too as i know that they need mapping and in my mind it was never an option not to map a jap import....
im NOT after another project. need a car that drives 100% and might do the odd track day end of story.
@mick; swapping this car private and dont kno anyone that could put a scope down there in short time... either i take the car and check it then or not do it lol.
i PM'd robbie @ tdp there. see what he thinks.
im having doubts tho and that aint good.
well if doubting it and unless its fierce cheap then look elsewhere IMO, you dont wana go buying a car doubting it, cos youll never be happy with it then.
there is one easy way out of this just dont buy a scoby there are not a reliable car!! if you want to go away from nissan or is it just the ca!! LOL!! id get a evo or even a nice gsr lancer any day before a scoby
Apparently scooby engines are more prone to damage from the low octane fuel than any other jap car.
As gem said ,I wouldn't go buying a scooby if I wanted a cheep, reliable car.
cheap reliable 4wd 2.0 turbo, only a GT4 comes to my mind, very under rated car IMO
the way to look at it is ,if you want a relibale everyday car that wont cost you loads ,then buy a normal car!!! if you want something to drive everyday and bring to trackdays that will cost some money in up keep but not much ,then get a honda...as for the rest everyone has there own thoughts...all i can say is iv had a lot of subarus and have never had any bother..only 1 of them were mapped..any engine is soft in the wrong hands, and that goes for evos ,skylines, silvias the lot...and in some case's even hondas....its just look of the draw ,you could get a good 1 or a bad 1..parts are easy to get for them and not that dear tho...u could get a evo or gsr or gt4 ,but the same thing it could last you years ,or blow up a few days after...every car has its good & bad points..
yeah i was looking at gt4 already but not many mint ones around for around 5k. had my eye on 2 evo3 but both didnt have test and the lads seem dodgy. dont like gsr at all and the hondas are still going for relatively big money because everyone wants them now in recession times... they didnt fall in price like the rwd nissan did. i need to put my s13 in as a p/x and obviously ppl aint taking rwd as good anymore
Id go evo much more reliable car or a gsr 1.8 quick car for the engine size brought 2 in from japan, ive always wanted a subaru but theres soooo many bad stories, on the other hand east coast customs up north do a full rebuild with few uprated bits for around 1k sterling
haha same ere. 1st scooby i saw was bout 7 years ago in my ex-local garage.. i go "wow look thats a pretty car!" and the mechanic goes; "no, its a piece of shit" LOL :D:D
haha what makes you think id want to rebuild it? if i had 1k to rebuild something id rather go on hols
done. i aint risking it. nice car, but guy obviously has no clue.
so no good. before i risk getting a shitbox id rather stick with the nissan and just fit the hbrake and come up with funny excuses when the guards stop me....
"its the lever for the sunroof!"
"my 2nd gearstick, incase original one fails"
"i... dont.... know.... which lever you mean, sirr"
"oh that lever.... sorry, but thats very private.... *shakes boobs*"
:D
why is there this myth evos are more reliable than subarus? get a bad 1 and they both are torture, buy and good impreza and enjoy it, plenty of nice 1s for 5k
Irish ones are just as bad unfortunately. I loved my brothers one but it broke the poor chaps heart. He paid 14k for it and sold it for 4k after 3 years and only got 1 years worth of driving out of it.
Eileen I know where there's a nice Supra that you could swap your S13 for. :p :D
because people talk shit...there is a lad down here that has rebuilt more evo's than subarus..and all the talk of mapping is bullshit ,both blow up simple as...and people dont understand ,its easyer do a engine change on a subaru..inline gearbox and no pulling out shafts..:D
I'd leave it girl as the Type RA has the close-ratio gearbox too so its always doing higher revs than normal.
yeah no worries i aint taking it.
in the ad he had cupholders listed instead lol
ive had a gud few scoobys!! bought another at the weekend!! as lot as der kept serviced and kept standard dey are spot on!!! ive only blowin up one and it i had a hole load of shit done to it witout mapping it!!dat was after one full year of doggin b4 she blew!! just get someone who knows der scoobys and you will get a gud one!! der are still plenly of gud standard ones left out der!!
