Hi lads,Im saving up for something for entry level track drifting at the moment and i was wondering would a skyline gts n/a having enough power to get going or would i be better off getting something else? my budgets around €1500 at the moment.
a few factors come into it.
the r33 is a reletively heavy car compared to sbody/r32.
would you be looking at the rb20de or rb25de?
if i was in your position, i'd save the extra few bob and get a turbo model. you wont last long in the n/a before you're itching for the turbo
It'd be the rb20det i would be going for, thats why i was worried about it being n/a and i was hoping stripping it out would help with the weight abit? but turbo seems to be the way to go
Rb20det is turbo, and didn't come in the r33 as standard afaik. It would be very difficult to drift a r33 if its not turbo
If you saved a bit more youd easily afford something proper:
This is a full drift spec for just over €2k
Nice a Rb20det in an S Body, caged etc

i thought rb20det was non turbo, sorry im new to this :s i think i'll just bite the bullet and save up as much as i can because i dont want to go down the bmw route, cheers lads
rb20de is non turbo, the t stands for turbo.
It would be a boat to drift better off gettin sometin lighter peter ts 328 Beemer seems to be the job for near that money
There's a turbo s14a in cork for 1500 on done deal just went up a few hours ago
You wouldn't need to save much more to be honest, plenty yokes around that can be got cheap.
i have r33 rb20de non turbo and and not to hard to drift now the only thing i done to it was weld the diff and plenty of practice
back to topic lol
but next on the to do list is upgrade the clutch to stage 2 and put in hydro handbrake to be done in jan
once u have those three things done u should be well able to drift it
p.s. you could do with stripping it out also to make it lighter as it does tend to roll like a boat lol
p.p.s. the rb stands for skyline engine 20 means 2 litre 25 means 2.5litre and 26 means 2.6 litre and if there is a t after it it means turbo
so rb20de means 2litre skyline non turbo
where as rb26dett means 2.6 litre skyline twin turbo and rb25det means 2.5litre skyline turbo
hope this helps
Common myth, just a engine series like VQ,SR but at best it means response and balance, http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/RB26DETT or http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%97%...82%B8%E3%83%B3
Total waste of money buying a stage 2 for one of these
There is pretty much no tuning that can be done to them man, Cheap clutch , cut more weight out of it and try pick up a 25 de even, and eventually hang a turbo off it
Cut the absolut bollix out of a 33 and it wont be too bad , as for calling them a boat their just about the same as a s14 in essence.
To the op(what does that mean) if you can get it cheap then go ahead, cut the jaysis out of it and weld it up and have fun, end of the day thats what its all about, you can have a 400bhp monster but if your afraid of damaging it or cant afford to get it out its a total waste. Main thing is to get your arse in the seat of a car and just get out there and have fun, the rest will fall into place........
Cheers for all the info lads,i rang about that s14a an hour after it went up but there was no answer, so i think i'm going to save away until the summer and buy an s body with a turbo or else if one of those doesnt come into budget il get an 328 or 325 seeing as im a complete novice.
as was said before, lighten the clutch and flywheel, throttle response improves a heap then, but if your just lookin for somethin to mess with at a few track days, dont waste ur money, up the pressure on the back wheels, and go for it, tighten up the handbrake and your ready for a lil fun, ... or you could go the extra bit and put a hydro in,
i had a non turbo sr20 and never had any trouble drifting it cant imagine a skyline being any different
Just to wrap this up i was reading up on n/a r33's and after getting a rough estimate of the price to make it drift ready the way i wanted it,i decided to scrap the idea so last week i bought an s14 with a sick sounding sr20 det up in meath for cheap so im hoping to get it ready for superdrift at some stage:wink:
cheers, no i havent got it futher than off the trailer and stripped the engine out of it but i have a rebuilt sr20 det ordered so hopefully itl be abit closer to getting on the track after that swap :D .That sounds like a solid plan, did you need to get a cage put in to drift at the tannery?
I think I will if I'm off work, where abouts is the tannery?im based in cork btw
its about 70 miles from cork city acording to aa route planner but you get there in bout hour and a half comfortably as its nearly all motorway as i have been told by other people that come from cork reguraly
what part cork u from lad ?
you head towards dungarvin ignore that turn and head on till u come to a round about straight will bring u on to waterford and left will take you to portlaw or carrick on suir
portlaw is only 5 miles from that roundabout. its at the top of the town lad
