Slight change of plan...

Well lads,

I joined up here in Feb this year (see thread http://www.driftireland.com/showthre...t=15863&page=2)

Due to recently becoming a Daddy for the first time I've got myself a cheap 4 door daily driver, but I've also decided to keep the 180SX as it's not worth selling in the current climate. As there's really no point in taxing and insuring it for the 1 weekend a month I'd drive it, I'm strongly considering putting it to good use and turning it into a full time drifter.

What I'm after really is some advice on the best (and cheapest!) route to go to get it drift ready. Myself and the lads are fairly handy with a spanner so can do a lot of work ourselves, just can't afford to go wasting cash on unnecessary parts.

For a basic setup all you need is:
Coilovers, welded diff, strip everything out (air-con etc.) Bucket seat w/ harness and helmet to start
Then you'll want
Hydraulic handbrake, boost controller,
then you'll want extra lock and camber arms etc etc....

I could go all day but with a welded diff and coilovers will do the job;)

That's pretty much what I thought alright. What's you're opinion on second-hand coilovers? Also, is there much involved in welding the diff? One of the lads is handy with a welder.

EDIT!!!!!!! What the fuck is going on with threads being resurrected from the DEAD... roco's v8 build was resurrected yesterday??????????

You'd pic a welder up for in around 150-200. You don't need much power to start sliding, sure look at super180's video from Mondello :eek: Bucket seat and harness is a must, with the 180 standard seats you'll be getting tossed about the car.
If you can push for a boost controller or a bleed valve aswell its an extra benefit. Depending whether you have the t25 or the t25g, they can handle 1 bar boost fairly safely which will give you a bit more power.

Best of look with it ;)

Nothin wrong wit second hand coilovers. As long as they ain't leakin etc. (and it just so happens that i have a set for sale :-)

My mate actually has a welder and all the gear so if it's not too complex a job, I'd say we'll give it a go ourselves. I'm sure I'll find a guide on here or DW if I dig a little.

At the moment the car is as it was in Japan, HKS induction kit, HKS EIDS, stock ECU but it's been opened as the seal is broken. If the boost gauge is accurate, it's making 0.7 bar in full throttle at the moment. I had it semi-stripped last year and it was very easy to break traction alright. Can't imagine I'd need anymore power to get started, not like I'll be doing giant, smoking, 100kph drifts straight away or anything (Already did that on the N7 in the rain, accidentally, hence the crash last year... :P).

Correct me if I'm wrong but, surely it's not safe to increase the boost without adjusting fuelling, cooling etc?

Really? What make/model? Do you have any specs? Also, how much do you want for them?

I wouldn't be an expert on this (mappers could answer), but as far as I know any modification to boost requires a remap to be safe safe, but i'm sure the fueling table maps on the ECU have some give. Alot of lads on here including myself, have up'd the boost with no problems, one lad running 1.2 bar if I remember. When your running the small t25's on near peak boost, there is alot of heat generated as the flow is very high, an intercooler really helps here. After a run in mondello, the turbo side of my intercooler was piping hot and the other side is way cooler (so they do their job well)
Just as I mention that, an oil cooler and a rad wouldn't be a bad idea either. My oil/water temp was true the roof after a couple of laps in mondello, so worth keeping an eye on with gauges.
I'm not going to lie, but most of monthly wages go into the car... I began building mine from an unmodified road 180sx. I chose to do this so I can learn about the car and so I can fix it if anything goes wrong.

I am using the single solenoid greddy profec b, and it does the job nicely, so I cannot comment on any other controller.
Boost controllers pop up regular on here, so keep an eye out. Have a look through through some of the breaking threads

Cheers for the info lad, all really useful stuff. I had a suspicion that the WMIC wouldn't really be up to the abuse of drifting, so a FM is defo on the shopping list. Hadn't though about the oil cooler though to be honest, so thanks.

Yeah, I like the idea of building the car from the ground up myself too. Like you say, it's good to have an understanding of what makes the car tick. As for the wages, unfortunately I can't put anywhere near as much as I'd like in each month. I'm considering asking my brother to get in on the project with me, spread the cost. Anyone ever done something similar? Do they normally allow you more than one driver at drift days? Would it be worth it for the amount of track time you'd both get?

There was 3 drivers on the 180 the last Mondello day. The thing was it was open pit due to it being a Friday :) So could go in and out all day, plenty of seat time for everyone.

On normal days, i'd say two drivers would be max if you want to get a bit of seat time yourself

That answers my question anyway. Thanks man. I'll give the brother a shout during the week and see what he thinks. He has an auld Mitsubishi Carisma with a knackered engine that he's thinking of scrapping, so he already said that I can take whatever parts I want that he's added to it, bucket seats, gauges etc. I'm sure he'd be fairly interested in getting some track time in the 180 himself.
