Good reason to have a proper roll cage!

I thought I'd throw up a few pics of the footwell of the Sileighty, when I was taking out the loom I saw how bad it actually was.
My cage was a Kazama Auto seven point bolt in, around dash type, and it actually came out of this ok, but if there was a proper weld in cage attached to the chassis out further this would not have been as dangerous. Just a bit of food for thought!

Bolt-in bullshit,,,,,, it really goes to show how easy you could be badly hurt because of a bad cage!!

so in my postion, as a road car .......... a bolt in or weld in?
like in a cause of a bolt in, where it bolted to the floor
if you put stronger and bigger plates to blot into, would that not strenghtn the cage
at the floor becasue the cross sectionaly area is stronger?

That's not the problem johno, the plates could be a foot square but that won't help the position of the a pillar bar in the dash dodger cage, any sort of downward impact and it will bend in shit, and it also has the problem that mike is showing that the bar is too far back from your feet area which is quite dangerous!! And another problem is if you get a high side impact say on the pillar above your head, the whole cage will fold which ever way the impact is,,!! Where a proper weld in triangulated cage will not have any of these problems!!

so in other words say the fuck away from dash doggers and bolt in's
i wouldnt have thought bolt in were tat dangous do breaden, like the
dash doggers are letal as mike shown above
but even throw the dash bolt in? that have the same problem
as mike show above......

Yeah Stonies right lads, although in Prodrift you do have to have a door bar at the apex of the bend if its an around dash type so that will transfer the force onto the hoop. The real problem is that they are too far back the footwell. Although a lot of wheels would just have broke in that impact (which didnt feel that bad at the time) the Work wheel held together and if you look where the accelerator pedal finished up against the column its plain to see that it wouldnt be the best place to have your foot! Basically im lucky Im a small fella!

but look at it this way lads,

id imagine a dash dodger is only at its strongest takin a roll impact and not a side on slap like that!
and if dash dodgers were as bad as stated above there wouldnt be as many ov them out there..
all compitition cars would want a proper weld in as the impact is more than likely going to be harder?!

ps i now have to go out to the shed to see how straight that part of the cage is!!

cage is perfect. have it here in the shed. car bent around it!!

So they are not as bad as everyone says its really only down to the positioning of the base.

a dash dodger can kink where the bends are to go around the dash if a car is put on its roof. welding in door bars can prevent this.

id imagine if they were as bad as some ppl make out the likes of cusco and other well known brand names wouldnt be making them.

fuck i didnt realise it was that bad mike fucking hell,, weld in only job never liked the idea of bolt ins

id say it was a tight squeeze out of that, just shows how important the right roll cage/ safety equipment can be!

reminds me of the car crash i was in side impact at about 100mph but my feet were jammed in there with the pedals wish i had a roll cage that nite anyways fair bit of damage done there you were lucky it could have turned out much worse

Wow! My S14 has a dash-dodger Cusco cage put in by the previous owner!

Seriously considering whether its even worth keeping it!! :eek:
