Personally I think competitive drifting is a combination of 3 things, all equally as important.
1. The cars capabilities
2. The drivers skill and experience
3. The mental aspect
And I think an equal amount of effort should be put into each one.
There are loads of people I watch who are brilliant in Mondello at practice days, have a very capable car, yet just don't seem to do it on the day of an event for some reason. Its very hard to replicate pressure, nerves, your own expectations etc, and everyone feels them, its just managing them that's important.
Ultimately if anyone isn't winning or doing as well as they hope at competing, I think they should look at which area is the biggest reason and try and improve that. Too many people are quick to point the finger at the car, but if you are not doing your best driving in that car on the day of the competition, then its not the cars fault. If its skill, then more seat time. And if its the mental side, an amazing really expensive car will only worsen the pressure and expectations. More competitions with less pressure untill you are comfortable would be money better spent imo.
From my own experience, I felt my mx5 was just not up to it last year, certainly not at the high end anyway. I thought I did ok with the mental side though, as I put some of my best runs in at competitions and when the chips were down. My skill level was yet to be known as I wasn't long at it. So I felt the car was what I most needed to upgrade.
I now have a good car (certainly for the level I'm at anyway), and what I found at Prodrift RD1 was that this completely changed the mental side of it for me. I no longer had excuses, I suddenly had pressure and expectations, mostly from myself.....and I drove worse than I ever did in the mx5 lol! Since then that's what I've worked on, and with a few good results your confidence grows, and you can start thinking that the mental side isn't bad now, is it the skill or the car that needs most attention? Only when you win it all can you stop asking those questions!
Sorry for the long post, but just the way I look at it.....if it makes any sense lol!
