coming along nicely, nice fab work.
Cheers lads.
Finally got the car running today! :D stiv poped down and worked his magic and changed a few settings and she barked into life.
Time to start racking up some milage now so i can get a remap asap :D
Nice one, hope it runs........like an animal!
only seeing ur thread now man ....... !fair fannys to ye
well done colm hats of to ya..
Mint project Colm, fair play
in your first pic of the car is that garda crime scene tape on the railins ???????haha..........:D
sweet car lad
Thanks for all the comments lads :)
Shes up n running nicely now with sfa lag. I had it up with stiv last weekend and we took it out to check everything is still running ok. All the fueling is now sorted and nice and healthy, it was a bit rich down low and lean around 3k but if it was still bang on after all the work thats been done on it it would be a bit wierd lol
It got a new rev limit of 4500rpm and running .66bar for next 900miles of the run in. All was going grand till about thursday when the ice started coming n it been hard to find anywhere to drive it without aiming for a ditch constantly so im not risking it till it clears up a bit. Only have about 350miles left to do so shouldnt be take too much longer till its ready for a full map
a little pic of everything done :D

lookin good man...id say your ragin bout not bein able to finish wearin it in till weather clears up???
keep her lit colm ;-) i won't make it up on wednesday have the whole family thing to do
yea its a balls :( all the driving so far as been in the rain but i was driving around the other night in the snow n ice n got the feeling i was being a bit stupid lol
Not gonna risk banging it up now when im just a few hundred miles from being finished. Hopefully the ice might melt for a while 2m afternoon long enough to me to get out of my yard and take it for bit of a spin
i take it thats its you thats been up at bishops court flat out?
nope wasnt me dude, never been up that way at all
Im bored so figured id update this abit. The car is just about run in now, all the shitty weather is stopping me from getting the car on the road much.Ive got about 200kms to go to make the magic 1000miles and time for a full map.
I got a bit bored today so started work on a couple of new things i picked up a couple of months back. This is gonna be a track car and something to try a few things with.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010655.jpg
its a 180 shell with everything bar engine and gearbox. Il be taking it into the garage and stripping it out as soon as i get some stuff sorted and make some room.
I got the engine ive lined up for this car on the stand today and after about 3hours i had it fully stripped n looking like this.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010658.jpg
I hadnt planned on touching it for a while but figured while everthing from my other build was still in my head i should get stuck in.
The engine itself doenst seem to bad so far. It was down on compression and was rebuilt in a hurry by another fella and never started after that. It looks like it might be a low enough milage block, the big ends look almost new and the mains only have a tiny amount of wear on them.
There was coolant mixed with the oil though and some coolant/water sitting in cyl 1 and its left some rust marks on the bore.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010660.jpg
I had planned on honing all the bores anyway so hopefully that will clear it up. After that then the flywheel is in major need of a skim. There was a 4puck clutch on it thats been well used. The pressure plate that was on it is wore enough too but il use it till it dies, ive other parts to spend money on.
The inside of the oil pump that houses the rotor looks like its starting to crack so il stick on the oil pump from my other build, i know that was running fine.
Various nuts and bolts are missing from the block and theres a few bolts from the cam retainers broke off that are gonna need retapping. Then just a matter of bolting it all back together n get the most i can out of it.
this is for frank really lol but there was a standard redtop oil pick up in that block so finally could get some picks to really show the differences between the redtop and blacktops pickup.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010662.jpg
blacktop on the left. Redtop on the right.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010663.jpg
Blacktop above uses a sheet gasket to seal. The redtop under it uses an O ring.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...2012010664.jpg
and the different bracket mounting positions. Retop on the left. Blacktop on the right
Its the blacktop one with the steel gasket i have lad, cool :)
So exactly how fancy is this new engine gonna be
For now its gonna be kept simple enough. Port n polish the head, 1mm mhg, 1000cc injectors, e85, custom intake mani(hopefully), 90mm t/b, standard rods n pistons, acl bearings, top mount exhaust manifold and a t3 of some sort n rb box. Should be enough to keep it reliable and pokey.
Il start stockpiling the other parts I need and by the end of the year pull it apart and fiddle with it a bit more ;)
thats the job colm.i have still no luck with a turbo :-( i won't be able to make it over to u tomorrow either
No bothers man. I was gonna give you a txt in a bit to say the roads around here arent too good. Im finding it the same with the turbo and the other stuff :( found the turbo i want, just not a price i want to pay. Il give ya a bell tomorrow, have a few other things to chat to ya about too.
would ya sell the front lip off the black one? :)
Yea lad il see anything off it i can lol.
Are you in any hurry for it? i prob wont be stripping it down for another couple of weeks
i stripped down the head of the other engine tonight. The stem seals look to be on there way out, there was feck all resistance on them when moving the valves and the rubber is tearing on them a bit.
Theres also 2 broken cam retainer bolts stuck it in that ive got to find a way to take out.
I was poping the valves out n was a bit suprised to see this...
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...4012010670.jpg
there was a good bit of water in it but that seems to be the most of the rust. the rocker cover gasket was even close to being sealed on the block so im hoping thats where it came from.
I was worried there might have been a bent valve but so far they look good. Only looking by eye so far but il check them properly over the weekend and mic them to make sure there still in tolerance
colm did you have to change all the fuel lines for e85???
where did you get the bits..
cheers...
I did indeed lad but its only really necessary if your aiming for 400+
I used 3/8 hydraulic hose for the main need line and 8mm rubber hose then for the rest. I used some over braided stuff for the lines in the car just to provide a bit of extra protection over them.
For a track car youd get away will all rubber lines, ive seen them being used on a couple of road cars with no issues at all.
nice one :D ! e85 ftw. Id say if you can ya might as well swap the lines for 8mm, the standard ones can get a bit restrictive when you really start looking for juice
Im snowed in today so decided to fit my adjustable rear arms.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...7012010675.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...7012010676.jpg
i just measured them up the to the same as the standard for now and il take it to be aligned propely when the weather clears up
Ive been messing about with a few things and made a bit of an attempt to get some more lock, thanks to tj for a mad notion that paid off
I marked up things roughly and did some rough trig. and before doing anything i had 32degs of lock either side.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...3012010685.jpg
Now ive 44degs.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e1...9012010690.jpg
some clearence issuse are about to arise i think. My disc is about .5mm from catching the lower arm and im getting close to the tension rod with the inside of the rim. As long as there not rubbing im happy, when we get a way to alter the anchorman without having to do any welding il prob have to make a few adjustments
Glad it worked out well fella :)
Did you take pics of the work ya did?
sssshhhh its a secret lol
haha so secret i dont even know what your talking about :p
Time this was updated.
Things have gotten pretty slow this last while. I stuck on some adjustable rear arms and then woeful trouble trying to find anyone to re-align my car because it was "too low, too long and too wide" but i eventually got it done so its sorted for now. It isnt exctly how i wanted it and there was a slight misunderstanding which led to some almost positive camber on the front but tis sorted now.
While i was waiting if got some hid's and locking collars from apex. The lights are unbelievable, the difference between them and the standard ones is incredable.
There was a terrible knocking coming from the rear of the car after fitting the collars, after a bit of searching i found out thats fairly normal so now i get to hear every bang and clunk coming from my diff. It would have been handy if i had found that out before taking the collars on and off a couple of times to figure out wtf the noise was
and a slightly less boring update, the car is now mapped and pulling like a train! :D:D
Stiv worked a bit of his magic on it today and its reminded me how much all the effort was worth it
We expected the q45 afm to max our first but it held out and still has some more room to go. It never went about 4.86v i think. At the min its mapped up to 1.5bar. Once it goes over 1.4/1.5bar is starting to drop to about 1.3 once were above 7k rpm.
Stiv thinks the .5bar spring in the wastegate could be opening slightly so time to get a 1bar spring and keep going.
There was little or no knock throughout the mapping, reading less than 40 on the wideband on the 1.6bar run with plenty of timing advance.
Its now coming on boost at about 2800 and hitting full at about 4000 and feels like a different turbo compaired to how it was running. It used to begin spooling at about 3500.
Traction is now an issue hitting 4.5k in second gave us an interesting instant loss of grip moment on a bone dry road. Along with it slipping out of 4th gear while doing a power run in when lifting off at the limiter
all in all im a happy chap today some more things to do before the trackday but nothing too major. Massive thanks to Stiv for spot on work as always
Higher compression e85 powers ftmfw!
hows the sr box holding up man??i'd say mondello won't be long about testing it!same as myself:D
nice going colm glad to hear your happy with it
@nick how is your car coming on??
