sweet build lad ,nice to see something different :)
Back at this in the morning!
Right lads, only got back at this today had a busy week,,,
I have since sorted a loan of a oem Honda hard-top so i can get a fiberglass copy made, this is going to save me alot of money towards buying a oem or after market hard top:D
I also sorted a E36 M3 6speed getrac gearbox today:D couldnt find an E46 one for decent money so going to pick this up during the week,,,,
Right back to getting rid of evil weight:p I started into the drivers side sill today to get rid of all the side impact protection and some other stuff,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1358.jpg
This is how it looked starting this morning,,,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1360.jpg
this is after a few 1mm grinder disc's and a shit load of spot welds,,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1361.jpg
Here is some more chassis strenghtning that wont be needed and is quite heavy material,,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1362.jpg
And its gone,, pain in the arse getting this part off both sides...
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1363.jpg
And finally for today I had the bar for mounting the radiator and a big heavy piece of multi layer box section between the chassis legs,,
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/103_1364.jpg
So got rid of them and will replace them with light roll cage tubing,,
Took 40kg's out of the car today,,
And I am looking into getting all fiberglass panels, doors, boot door, quarter panel's the lot but will know more next week;)
Thats it for today, should have all the chassis lightening done by next weekend and will be getting it up to TDP for its custom roll-cage:D
Il update again next weekend,,,,,,,,,,;)
This is gona be mental light ,trust me on this one lads itl be some car ,the blood and sweat literally gone into the prep is outsatnding ,weight saving alone is ridicolous yet compensated in the correct places with the cage and bracing .........................
Also wana take the chance to thank brendan for being a gent and takin his time to look after me today down the garage ,top bloke . :)
this is a serious build u putting together lad best of luck with it..
sweet build best of luck :)
E46 M3 and E39 M5 6 speed manuals are the same gearbox apart from having different bellhousings (which are interchangable anyway(
E36 328 and 3L M3 gearbox are the same but they are ZF and much tougher than the Getrag 6 speed E36 M3 Evo gearbox. John made bits of his Evo box
The E46/E39 Getrag 6 speed is a lot stronger than the E36 one as it has bigger shafts and stronger bearings but I'm not sure if its really worth it considering they are expensive and if you break it, your screwed whereas E36 5 speed boxes are plentiful and can be picked up for 150 quid or so.
I have an E46 M3 gearbox in my E30 318iS but its only a roadcar.
Also the fact that clutches are much easier to get for the E36 boxes as the splines are abit of a prick to get a clutch to suit on the E46 or E39 M5 boxes.
Your going to make bits of the layshafts and synchros on the E36 box to be honest as they aren't upto alot of abuse... but then again, the F20 won't have as much torque and its a realtively light car.
Going to be a sweet car once done! :)
Yea I talked to j.p about boxes alright he was saying he broke 1 or 2 6speeds alright but he said he gave them awfull abuse:D I know meself I will prob break the 36 box but at least if I make an adapter plate I can get a 46 box afterwards and bang it in:D
It will have not so much torque but more power and revs which will help but it's really wait and see, if I have trouble il get a 46 box,,,
Thanks for the info tho,,,,
E46 box won't go straight in as the clutches are different. Everything else is the same though.
Also, unless you plan on using 6th gear, the 6 speed box will make no difference whatsoever as 1st-5th is the same in both E36 3L M3 and 3.2 Evo. The E46 has very slightly different gearing then for 1st and 6th but it's only the difference of +/- 0.05 or so in ratios.
Personally I'd go with the 5 speeds as they at easy to replace. If you break the 6 speed your stuck with trying to find a replacement E36 6 speed at a cost of 300 quid at the very least and I have seen E46 boxes go or 700-1000 unless your lucky. I bought an engine and box together to make mine valu go money :p
Then I you do break the 6 speed and can't find one youll be having to redo the prop, gear-linkages an mountings for a 5 speed if your running out of time for an event etc.
John broke the original Evo box in the M3, I used it in my iS for test fitting before I bought a good one after he took it out and put in the 5 speed to the M3.
He broke 3rd in a 5 speed as well though but that gearbox might not have been great to start with and he was doing 3rd gear rings :D
That's justy opinion of it anyway. I'm shut you know what you are at anyway an it'll turn out well either way :)
Just seen this build on DI's facebook.
Wow:eek: Can't wait to see this thing go:cool:
Serious work lads keep it up:D
