View Full Version : Toyota Starlet KP61 vrs Beams

I bought this as a rolling shell because its the only KP61 I've ever seen with a Toyota Metal Sunroof from the factory which is extremely rare... Anyways the plan is to fit a redtop Beams engine from an MR2 running a Supra gearbox with a custom prop shaft connected to an AE86 late spec rear axle with a TRD 2way LSD. Bumping up the power will be a set of 20v ITB's with 70mm trumpets all controlled by either a motec or omex ecu to get the most outta the engine.
Car will also recieve a few other trick bits. Bodywork will need to be done again in parts thanks to that dope who did it first... Cheers, grrr...

Thanks mate but the project has taken a turn for the better ;)
The project has taken a turn for more power LoL Sold the Redtop Beams engine and Supra 5 speed box, the engine was quoted from Toyota at 197bhp, not enough thou... Wanting to stay Toyota I've just upgraded to the Blacktop Beams engine from an Altezza with a 6 speed gearbox quoted at 220bhp. I've also bought an OS Giken clutch and will be running this engine on 20v ITB's and stacks...
The new plan is to move the engine back 3 inches through the bulkhead, modified the front arms and knuckles for insane lock, fit a pedal box, wire tuck, new front coilovers, 4pots upfront, flatten the engine bay, cage it, stripped interior, soda blast the shell and give her a full respray inside and out.
Also the wings, doors, bonnet, rear hatch will all be replaced with lightweight fibreglass panels and the glass swapped out for Lexan polycarbonate window kit, 2 seats and harness's all to be finished for this Oct. Roll on some crazy busy weeks ahead !!!

Change in engine and box meant some chopping so we decided to go the full hog :) Working on a new gear linkage so all should be fine :)

That is correct ;) Car should be very interesting to handle not to mention the shortest propshaft ever LoL
So with the Tezza nearly done and dusted, I started to get a bit bored so sourced myself a proper cage for this beauty and the best part is that is can be certified for rallying :)

Update time on this baby, I got the fibreglass bonnet, boot and doors. Just waiting on the wings to arrive, as far as I remember the KP61 weighed in at around 725kgs from the factory so with every metal removed and replaced with a lightweight FG item, glass replaced for Lexan and stripped bay and interior I'm hoping to be bring down the weight although with the cage, engine, box and ae86 rear axle, its anyones guess as to what the final weight will be. I do however plan to hit 250bhp n/a from the beams so power to weight ratio should be sick for what the car is... Will get up pic's of the FG items soon :) Mondello has inspired me to revive this project with the help of some good friends and even more than that some very skilled ones !

Don't forget the metal sunroof from Toyota ;) Cracked the front bumper so some plastic welding will be needed :(

any update with this build havent heard anything with a while?
Not much has been happening with building the RX7 and RX8, they have been soaking up all my funds tbh but what has really put the project on hold is the running gear, myself, john and brendan were looking at using the beams setup but then starting looking at rotaries, 1uz etc So after months of weighing up the options we decided to go with the beams setup in the end, I feel a little disappointed to be honest but Brendan is convinced it is the best option as it will be the most driveable option and should be the best crack...
While we were messing around with the beams we split the engine and box to find a lightweight TRD Flywheel and a TRD Clutch, the box has some non toyota sealer on it too so gonna split that next and then the engine for a health check, fitting the itb's and she should be good for 250bhp n/a...

Cheers dude, ya we were looking at a 1UZ but when we started factoring in the diff, size of wheels needed, how it would affect the bodywork etc it all just became a nightmare, this setup will allow it to be great fun...

That is awesome in fairness, new plan, sold the Beams, we are pricing up the engine for this now but the plan is that it would be the biggest build I have taken on to date, all fab work will be done by Stone Motorsport and well I ain't telling ya who is doing the engine cause then yee will know what it is and I don't want to jinx it :)
