Before I even ask, no the answer is not sr20det :D

Anyone thats used ca18 before and has experience, what can be done to help prevent death? It is a standard engine. Differant oil pump...baffled sump....???

Accusump maybe? http://www.accusump.com/

Not sure if the main cause is oil pressure loss for the CA or not, but they are recommended for the RB26.

rite i had my fair share of ca18s,, had one that was 321 brake,,my advice is a good oil cooler and good oil, make sure all the breathers in the head are good,, oil catch tank and if your budget allows acl bearings are a must

if your budget allows acl bearings are a must

it doesnt :D

well do the breathers alright for sure, never thought of that thanks, and a ghetto catch can will do the job sure! i must sort an oil cooler and mount it in a hole in the bonnet. it will probably get too many smacks up front for it to be safe:)

Will it run long enough to get up sum speed to crash it

going by my ca which is a monster since the word go and has never seen rebuild, all i do is very regular oil changes and services. every 2.5k.. 3k AT MOST. and hell she gets hard abuse. no baffled sump etc etc...
edit; and always warm up and cool down...

best prevention is buy a sound one. simple.

Without a strip down/inspection then you are playing russian roulette with any 15+ year old standard turbo charged engine.

If the engine is PROPERLY rebuild to manufacturer specs with new bearings(race ones not needed unless you plan on hiking the power a good bit.) rings, oil pump etc the you will have no issues once its tuned correctly and looked after properly.

There is nothing wrong with the design of the ca. they are not a weak engine, most at this age just have worn bearings, rings, pump, ring journals etc.
These are what cause failures, not any design flaw.

Yup yup dont get me wrong I know its not design, just ways of preventing death because i dont know the history and its high miles!

Put very simply, If its a good engine/properly rebuilt engine then it will last.

If its not either of the above, it won't last and no amount of baffled sumps or oil coolers will prevent that.

Yeh i understand. Im going to bank on the second option there as I have no proof of anything that was done to it so ill assume its in the poorest state and just service it, clean breathers and drive it!

Take off the two cam covers, if they're covered in shite inside you have an engine in need of work, also the breather pipe going to the rocker cover from the r/h side of the engine is the worlds worst design and is prone to carboning up, if its blocked remove it and clean it, if you don't then it will be bye bye CA fairly quickly. The CA isnt a bad engine, the problem is that they're from a pre synthetic oil era and werent well serviced, the SR's are giving the same trouble now with big ends etc.
