View Full Version : not runnin good wit new plugs?? jzx100
hey lads serviced the car recently and the chaser is runnin shit on the new desno iridum plugs i got for it, it gets very spluttery from 3000 revs onwards, idles grand but no power if full throttle really, i changed the plugs back to the old one that were in it earlier on and it runs perfect wit them but is bad when it idles wit them back in now.they are greddy iridium ngk ones which were in the car,its kinda wrecking my head, could it be the coilpacks or anythin?? an info appeciated cheers ;)

Did you check the gap with a feeler gauge on your new plugs? What model number plugs are they?
na didnt check that yet but wit the two plugs up together the new ones hav a bigger gap!! they are sk20rp11!!
Id say gap too man, im not great with all that crap but give Mike Deane a buzz tomorrow, he will steer you right.
Give the ngk's a clean with a wire brush and put them back in or get new ngk's, wouldn put denso's near it but if you do want to use them your problem is the gap. Gap them down to around 25-30 thou and miss mire should disappear!

Edit:
Basically what Stonie said.
thanks lads for all the info i will try both ideas so and if im not happy ill go wit new ngk ones, hopefully thats all it is anway

Well its not coils anyway if your old ones are working fine.
ya at least that was ruled out anyway nice one lad ;)
nothing wrong with denso plugs in a Toyota, they come from factory with them.
yes the gap on your new plug is too large, every time i change the plugs in my 1jz i'v to adjust the plug gaps.

its deffo your gap on them, new ones should be gapped to the same as the old ones
You can gap this & gap that lads. Ive worked with many mechanics & plenty of lads that were handy on Jap cars.
If you need yer machine sorted take it to Robbie. Simple as.
Take it to this expert & that genius. No prob work away with who YOU know.
Spend the extra 50 quid. Ive been around this block too many times.
I mite be full of shit or whatever i get branded with. Anything other than an oil & filter on my cars goes to TDP.
Sooner the better people cop on like I did.
Im not talking shit. Just dropped off my 500bhp Chaser for a few engine tweeks while im on holiday. Lets see what the boys can make of it.

You could have a dead plug either, sounds like its running right bad.
As wez said it good to have the right man at the car but Eric's from cork and changing plugs SHOULD be a straight forward job
its deffo your gap on them, new ones should be gapped to the same as the old ones
I'd agree with mick + stonie .
Either take them plugs back ,or regap them to 0.6-0.8mm. "going by the part no they're probably 1.1mm"
What's the part no of the old ones ?

I sorta disagree here Wez, Why waste money when you can just gap it to the same spec as your old plug and try that its not gonna to cost a penny, Fixing the gap to see will it fix the problem is what Id be trying anyway. Its not a engine rebuild he wants. Im not getting at ya here but its only plugs like and the problem was further narrowed down when the old ones worked fine.
denso plugs are utter shite!! and if any one wants to disagree iv got a pile of them here to show people how bad they realy are!! so fire them out over a ditch and get a set of NGKs an check the gap on them before fitting shud be grand!

yes yo get your car sorted when its not something simple then for sure take it to robbie, but the amount of times ive ripped my car apart and put it back together and robbie knowing that, if i went to him with incorrect gaps on the plugs he'd just slap me (well have big Mr stone do it) and send me home.
but anything i cant do myself goes to robbie, and anything i can do myself i do.

My car came with Denso's, but Powervehicles put in HKS iridium plugs, but after fowling them several times I went out and bought a new set of the Denso's that were originally in the car and it has been perfect since...
I was told to go with NGK plugs but I never got the full model number, i'll try them the next time though...
And yes I'm aware of the irony of my car being currently broken down :D Its not plugs though!
P.S. what should the gaps be then?
Once its sorted, i want another spin eric :D

I have had cars further than cork for simpler problems than plug gap. Ofthe the more simple the problem the harder to find.
If its got a 2835 at 1.1 on STD cams and 95 Ron fuel it might need a even smaller gap like 0.4-0.5mm max.
If the pugs that are in it are too cold then they will foul up during idle and not self clean on boost. This will result in missing all the way through the rev range. Also if the air fuel ratio is too rich or to lean the plugs will not self clean properly.
If you want to try an cheap NGK plug you can try a ngk bcpr7es if that works out a bcpr7iex is the iridium long life version.

i will be onto you at some stage this week about gettin a remap done soon, cheers eric

No problem at all. If you used the ES ones they will need changing every 2nd oil service as they are not a long life plug but they are cheap so itts all good.
Robbie
Grand job, ill give you a shout next week for a spin :D
