Bought this last summer for a right ole price to get some left hand drive practice in but it ended up sitting in the garden till about october.

Finally got the finger out in anticipation of a bit of snow over the winter, welded up the diff and away we went.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/100_0730.jpg

One of the best weeks of my life, every corner/roundabout/slip road/speed ramp/street was an adventure.

As with my last left hand drive machine, a 2.3t 740 Volvo, I thought that would be it and the E30 could return to its place in the garden until another winter.........................................

......but nope, as much as I wanted a jap motor there was no left hand drive stuff about for small moneys. I looked into what was available for the E30's and low and behold, anything you want can be picked off a shelf.
So a plan was hatched and the budget LHD daily drift machine went into production !.

Being completely new territory to me, I recruited a couple of mates who are into BM's. First off was to get it legit and through the NCT.

Both front seats were knackered, you should have seen the size of the chick that used to own this, seriously.
Out came all the toys...........
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/100_0631.jpg

And in went a spare recaro on a DC2 Integra base frame.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/100_0636.jpg

Thanks to Amy for that, it originally came in her FC.
The passenger seat was replaced with the drivers Recaro from Nixons E30 touring, nice one bosco !

Next on the list was the dodgy heater motor that had packed up. Thanks to my mate Paulie for the replacement and the two right hand drive headlamps as well.

Fun time.....
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/100_0644.jpg

Got a loan of an open diff and off she went for a test, they could only find a couple of visuals so it was as good as passed !. Some dori damage to rear bumper and a cracked lense were sorted and they handed me an 03/12 disc, ha ha !

His impreza in the states is lhd;)

But hooray, e30s for wrecking ftw! i need to wreck mine. Want to do some gentle bashing (ooh eer) and wall rubbing down in tullow?! e30 deatthhhhhhhs

Flat Eric

So with that out of the way the mods could begin.

First off was to get some more lock into it, being manual steering it was always going to be handy.

Made up some spacers
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/100_0645.jpg

They worked a treat, plenty of good useable steering lock now with only one draw back, 5 1/2 turns lock to lock
Combined with the welded diff I end up looking a lot like this trying to park anywhere.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLKR9tCiwvA

Next on the list was some horse power. Being a budget build M3 powers and the like were out the window but after talking with more BMW peeps and joining e30owners.com I came across a 2.5 24 valve swap for sale.It was in an E30 already with all the hard work done for good money so I went out for a test drive.
Turns out I end up knowing the guy selling it so a deal is made and I get a load of extra bits that this man won't need when he fits his e34 M5 motor !.

In preparation for the swap, I source a Ren*@!% brake servo ( can't even bare to write it sorry ). After grinding off all the evidence and a lick of paint I set about getting it fitted.
Old one on the right, it would have sat very close or even fouled on the 24v inlet manifold
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0013.jpg

Minty fresh, bad enough Im building my first ever non Japanese car but now its got bloody French car parts in it. Let us never speak of it again.

Decided to drop the engine and box out from the bottom with the subframe so I could do a little work on strengthening things for the new 6 cylinder plant.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0012.jpg

Both the engine mounting plates gusseted
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0019.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0020.jpg

The steering rack mounts looked like they only had 3 spot welds holding them on so they got some treatment as well
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0022.jpg

A quick lick of paint and all going well the new engine set up will be in tomorrow night.

I was trying to get a LHD cam from Holland but the chap would not budge from a pretty mega price. Nearly had a LHD KE from Portugal too but that fell through so this is about as close to a cam as I can afford right now !

Thanks Gem but I got something sorted, might be onto you about that LSD and subframe if you still have it though.

Bring on Tullow Pete, although all going well Im hoping to do Mondello in a couple of weeks !.

And just to save any more questions, this is why I need something LHD

good stuff lad she be a cool oul bus when ur done you shud try get an e36, m3 or z3 rack for it they are only 3.7 turns lock to lock iv got an m50 power stering pump and lines here also got a full e30 power steer setup here you can have to make it work rhd racks go for around 50-70 euro here id recon youd pick up a lhd one the same or cheaper and you wont even have the prob modding the manifolds!!

you prob no all the bits for castor e46 wishbones with e30 m3 esentric bushes and e36 m3evo top mounts for camber, also z3 gear lever is the best short shifter!! and only 60 off bmw!

how did the vids from goldstone come out id like to see how close we got that time i spun!! lol

Flat Eric
02-03-10, 11:31
I've actually got no interest in fitting power steering to it, it'll probably take my fingers off when drifting but at least I'll get a coupe of extra ponies from not running a pump.

I don't want to run too much castor either so I'll probably just fit the M3 rear wishbone bushes, have camber sorted already :D

I sold that engine day one to the first lad - Kieran, the lad doing the M5 conversion for Stephen and it is a dinger! ( I also supplied stephen with the M5 bits) Some power when it was in the 525iS. It was easily the quickest sport i had out of about 10 in total.

Should tip along nicely in that E30!

Less of it, sure brakes are only for wimps anyway I shouldn't have bothered with a servo at all :p

Anyway I was let down this evening so with no engine crane the 6 cyl isn't in yet.

Some wheel pics in the meantime to keep Si happy !

Set of 15x8 XXR's I picked up in the states for fack all, ended up being far to shiny and clean for this E30 so they're on the corolla for now.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0023.jpg

My mate Johnny down in Portugal was selling these and I snapped them up, 14x8 0 offset

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0024.jpg

Ended up costing almost twice as much as the XXR's but it had to be done, suit the car perfectly

Its not my car to do what I want with man, of course I suggested that especially since the car was supposed to be RHD to begin with but I wasn't listened to.

Are you an idiot, hhhhmmmmmm well lets see...................... ha ha only messin dude.

I suppose it comes down to who really wants to win. I'll do whatever it takes like building a cheapy E30 to practice in at my own expense. Unfortunately business is more important than winning to some people.

Im paying for my own flights so that won't work !. I'd prefer to be out of pocket and drinking beer with the lads in LA than out of pocket and sitting at home !

I'll just have to start winning and maybe then I'll get away with making some demands !

Right so, few updates from the last couple of days.

Since I got this complete set up from an E30 it was supposed to be a plug and play deal with the wiring, ended up being more like plug and smoke.

Turns out since mine doesn't have ABS I needed to cut that 12v supply wire from the engine loom or else it goes straight to earth through my body loom. So with some melted wires and a busted main engine relay replaced she started no bother, few !

Onward, needed to get an E36 gear selector, thanks to GEM once again for the advice and the lads down in AC car sales for the parts.

It was missing the selector rod so I shortened mine, ended up sleeving it since I prefer things not to break in the middle of a days fun
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0027.jpg

Got the wiring tidied up, made a new end for my throttle cable and started on fitting the rad. Before it went in I wanted to give it every chance of cooling this thing since Im running quite a small fan I pikey'd from the corolla. Decided to panel and duct the front valance area to keep as much air as possible heading through the rad, little over kill maybe but this thing needs to be up for abuse !

N/S duct and modified rad mount
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0034.jpg

Rad set up complete ready to go in. Spal fan from the old corolla radiator set up and Z3 fan switch. This switch is dual stage and operates at a lower temp. Had to sit the fan off centre to avoid any contact with the water pump pulley.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0033.jpg

Realised I needed more parts in the form of a coolant reservoir, mine was part of the rad but I got the larger E30 6cyl rad with the engine so obviously wanted to use that.
Gem to the rescue once again, quick spin down to Wickla later and I had it in place, made a small bracket to hold it and you can see the heat shield in place for the filter also
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0035.jpg

Other than that I had the front part of the prop shaft shortened by 10cm, its on and the welded diff is back up there.

I also got a complete exhaust system as part of the deal, its a modified E36 system and fits pretty good. The rear section is ridiculously heavy though so might not be on there very long, Im feeling some sort of crazy boso shit back there instead !

Had a spare Walbro pump from the corolla that did the job with some different fittings, the pressure regulator for the old motor sat back here too so thats gone in the bin as well now

Stripped and cleaned everything up, fitted the new inserts and springs.
You can also see the fixed camber plates I got a while ago for cheaps on the bay. Give you about 3 degrees more camber and should help with wheel fitmnet http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0045.jpg

Nah Im not fitting power steering, I like the clean look of the engine with out the pump and it doesn't make much difference to me for messing in.

Im sure a few months down the line I'll have a pain in my ass with it though so I might keep a look out for one alright !

Right O, been driving this for a while everyday and apart from the welder and manual steering its a great yoke !.

The rear subframe is about to fall out of it since the bushes went to shit after a day in Tullow, still a great day and the car loved it !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FYIpKiUYmg

Got a spare subframe and will be fitting solid bushes, toe and camber adjustment as well as strengthening the rear diff mount area.

Decided to get a sump guard on it this weekend though since I want to get it lower, got some 80mm springs to chuck in which should do the job nicely.

Made the sump guard from quite thin alloy chequered plate which isn't ideal but will do for now. I'll probably get a machine shop to copy it in something more sturdy eventually, maybe titanium or the like

So more lowness and a less vague and wandering rear end coming soon !

With the sump guard on and tested, kind of, I got to fitting the 80mm springs I got my hands on. Fairly used to pulling this thing apart now,

And the rears

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/Sully01/The%20E30%20build/Image0120.jpg

I'll have to hold off on the Dukes of Hazzard maneuvers until I can find a way of keeping the rears in place when the arms droop but for now she's sitting pretty good.

Hoping to have the rear end sorted for the next practice day which should help it skid with out the horrendous tramping its been doing lately. That and a pimp steering wheel will finish it off nicely !

Do like the yanks do, weld an eye onto the trailing arm and another eye onto the subframe and use a loop of ratchet strap to stop the arm dropping too far or you could be totally ghetto and weld a length of chain between the trailing arm and subframe

I did that with mine, and an other tramper e30 I had, I used old bits of seatbelts. But I did it on both sides instead of the middle.

If you do them nice and tight they become Anti-roll belts!!
