View Full Version : LarZ's ps13 reinCARnaton - see what i did there?
My ps13 has served me amazingly as a road car (http://www.driftireland.ie/forum/showthread.php/38132-my-PS13-daily-driver) for the bones of 2 and half years. It came a long way over the years and was parked up about a year ago when the ugly duckling 180sx (http://www.driftireland.ie/forum/showthread.php/46410-LarZ-Black-180sx-(The-Ugly-Duckling)) came around. Then that ate all my money.
With the to and fro of a car build, i had the majority of the parts i needed for a 2jz conversion on the ps13 but abandoned that idea close to crunch time as the costs mounted up so so high and i just couldn't justify it. I 'only' want about 350 to 400bhp. I want to be able to drive and enjoy this car. Yep, I want to be able to daily it. And keep the 180 too obviously. We can all dream :)
So i've started this thread to keep track of the timeline for the build. My camera's a bit shagged so there wont be many pics yet. I'll be keeping a spec list here too.
Basically we're going to see an n/a to turbo sr20 swap, manly wheels and a lick of paint...

First things first, i need an engine. WRONG... Big turbo... Bought myself a 2871r with actuator, manifold and a turbo elbow that came with it. That'll go nicely with the Apex'i PowerFC, brand new z32 AFM and nismo 550cc injectors that I picked up. I picked all of those up about 3 or 4 months ago and they were originally meant for the 180. But i love how the 180 drives too much to mess with it.
Then i went about sourcing an engine. The powerFC i got was a for a red top so that's what i set about looking for. I had had my eye on one in particular and was nearly tempted before. Apparently it had had cams done but i'm not banking on that. I haven't opened it up yet. It came with an s14 turbo and manifold, and also with an exedy 3 puk clutch and flywheel. It has been sitting for a few years but was making over 300bhp with that setup before.
The plan is to give that a freshen up, replace the bearings, bigger head gasket, new seals and gaskets and all that shite that i know nothing about but darren coates does know about so he'll be taking care of that for me as well as making sure i wont need to take the engine back out for a long time.
Other bits that i've picked up for the engine include a nismo FPR, a GTR fuel pump that i'm yet to pick up, and a brand new japspeed downpipe. Also have an o2 sensor. Bought a brand new GReddy FMIC off pepster on here. Plenty more bits needed but the back is broken on it...
Good stuff man. I hope it all goes to plan...
So do I :) I'm going to have a go at taking the existing engine out myself. I've got an engine crane coming this evening that i can borrow for a while. And I've one of the lads bringing me some big drums for my waste fluids. Also bought one of these bad boys:
http://i1.adis.ws/i/washford/696625?w=637&h=403
I know, I know... But i'm an absolute novice with engines and working on them. I have no shame admitting it either. Might get a hand from a few of the lads but I really want to try doing a lot of it myself. Once the bay is clear i'll sent that off for paint and at least be in a position to get the new engine in place.
I know there are millions of lists out there, but does anyone have a good comprehensive conversion checklist to hand?

Dude great start ive a few bits I've to get yet myself. Taking the engine yourself is very possible plenty of zip lock bags so you know what goes where tippex certain plugs and sensors remove as much as you can. While it's out change seals and gaskets save you in the long run
Yeah good advice on the zip lock bags! The engine is going for a refresh alright. I want it to be solid and not need to come out again.
Got the engine crane delivered today. Delighted with life. Must make a start properly though. I have the axle stands ready to go and all.
I may have purchased some Jdm as furrrrk wheels too. More on those when they arrive. Wouldn't mind an auld money tree if anyone has one handy...
So I was all set to get working on this at the weekend, but real life got in the way. Not to mention the cold.
In other news, an order has gone in for a bitchin' set of brand new wheels. I'll keep the wheel choice under wraps for now though :)

Looking forward to seeing this!
I picked up an Apex'i Auto turbo timer and a Greddy Profec B spec 2 boost controller for his a while back. The plan is to install these and whatever other electronics i need in the glovebox as i dont want to be looking at them all the time. I'll even be hiding the hand commander for the powerFC. I like power, but like OEM styling even more. I want as little crap cluttering my dash as possible.
Looking forward to seeing this!
me too :) hope to have it done by March
Well i said march... i didn't mention the year!
After this I set about taking the engine out with the help of some friends. This in itself was a great experience. I'd never taken the engine out of a car. I also wanted to know what i was dealing with from a rust point of view. I found some rust in the driver's sill, both rear arches needed a lot of work and some minor patches underneath, as well as the strut towers. Sounds like a lot but it wasn't really that bad.
https://scontent.fdub1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/19665102_10209778616324035_7204782902596862509_n.j pg?oh=e40e0fd913d9c9a5b680b83facdea187&oe=5B0403DA
Now that i knew what i was working with, it was time to decide the next step. Years ago, the car had been broken into, so you can see that in all my old pics the driver's door glass was blue and the driver's quarter window was tinted. this WRECKED my head as i just love the original brown glass.
https://scontent.fdub1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/10462806_10202174001373414_1821262815772268876_n.j pg?oh=ebf3213067d432ef8bb3c0fffa376cae&oe=5B0FEBA0
I managed to source some replacement glass in the UK. but the headache of replacing rubbers and all that started to dawn on me. I guess there wasn't anything wrong with the inside of the car so i decided i didn't want to touch that to try and save some work. Here are some pics of the rust:

But all in all considering the car had never been treated for rust or undersealed, all was looking very clean:

So quite content, and with a massive list of parts ready to go into the car, I bought a trailer and loaded her up.

I still didn't know where i was going to take the car but obviously I wanted quotes. And to get a quote on any work, especially bodywork, they need to inspect the car in person. Top of my list was the prestigious Stone Motorsport as they had the facilities to do absolutely everything in house without me having to worry about it. I had a very clear vision of what i wanted.
I ended up leaving the car with them as i was convinced I wanted them to do the work. Everything was super top secret about my colours, wheels etc, so i didn't really want the world to know what i was doing. Surely Laurence wouldn't be caught dead in a nissan that wasn't black?!
to be continued :)
Although i kinda know the progress of it already, but would be great to see all the updates written down here (with pics!!)
I'll be going into a lot of detail. spec lists, the process, etc. Just need to make the time :)
Rewind a couple of months... November 2016, I found myself in a position to buy my dream wheels. Not to everyone’s taste but I got them specced to standard arches with minimal rolling. More pics later in the build but for now:

A little more background to this. Years and years ago i dreamt of having a ps13. I first found out about the car in the early gran turismo games and that's where i fell in love with the two tone colour schemes, mainly the green two tone.
https://scontent.fdub2-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/28070797_10156334133251042_4233937330607926925_o.j pg?oh=b998ad66530ca34592fb97271965f3cf&oe=5B0C95EB
It had about 350hp and i used to go around saying that i was gonna own one one day. I loved my black ps13 but the green was the one i always wanted. I can't think of a more jdm 90s car colour.
Stone motorsport did a good job of keeping me up to date with regular pics. This was a particularly exciting day for me when the paint arrived.

They had already stripped all the sub frames and gotten to work on the underside and the body. The plan was to do a restoration of the entire outside of the car, so everything except for the interior which was already complete and in great condition.

I was contacted at one point about whether I wanted the original seam protection layer put back or whether I wanted a super clean show car engine bay. Needless to say I wanted to extra protection and want it to be as factory looking as possible

I just don’t have the time nor the skill to work to this level of detail, so was delighted with my updates from them every few days although we had our fair share of speed bumps.

Meanwhile I searched high and low for an aero front bumper. I had one, but it wasn’t ideal, then bought another but the seller changed his mind. Then found another one but that wasn’t good enough either. Then finally went to jdmdistro but that bumper had been cut

I was absolutely sickened after trekking from cork to Wicklow to kildare with it only to find out that it was cut :( it had been on a rocketbunny car before.
Regardless, the car was taking shape!

There was a considerable amount of bodywork to get it to this point and they had only just put the first layer of paint on.

It’s unbelievable to be honest. Huge financial strain though but I haven’t looked back with any regret! The sensible thing would be to sell the 180sx and put all my hopes and dreams into the Silvia but sure where’s the craic in that?!

the pictures are AMAZING!
so so clean!!! really cant wait to see it in person now!
Once the paint went on in late November, I got a little bit of pressure as stone wanted the car done and dusted before christmas! December being an expensive month as it is, there was no way I could commit so the project stalled for a month or so.
Then January came along and they went in all guns blazing. It was getting very real! It wasn’t without hassle though. Not from stone, but from the parts that I had. I travelled the country looking for an aero front bumper but eventually got sorted. People have a funny definition of parts being ‘mint’ in this country. Regardless, I got sorted.

The kit still wasn’t on and the stance was horrendous but oh my god.. I was in love...
I did get a little worried though as I had asked them to roll the arches accordingly before they took everything off to ensure that the wheels would fit the arches correctly. They didn’t though which still kind of worries me as the wheels are a bit pokey.
They lowered the car slightly, and this is how it sat

The front was still too high but the rear was just perfect for me. Many would still go lower but those people really don’t use their sbody as a daily like I do. I need that little bit of clearance.

There were some issues, some custom fabrication was needed as none of my engine parts had ever been working together before so there were a lot of fittings, hoses, pipes, etc that needed adjustments. I needed a new clutch master cylinder, igniter, door handle, z32 afm and many more bits and pieces so I hassled all my connections in the community and they really pulled through for me.
At this stage (February) I really wanted to go see the car again, so I took a trip up. And oh my god... just oh my god..

Now bear in mind that this isn’t meant to be a show car by any means so I told them that the engine bay wasn’t a massive concern for me. But for a 26 year old engine bay, that looks pretty damn tidy to me. I’m sure the mismatching hoses, wrong rocker cover colour and all those bits will annoy some, and although I’ll eventually sort them, they shouldn’t block me from getting the car on the road.

In an ideal world, the front would be lower again but apparently my coilovers (BC) can’t go lower without making the springs rock hard and un-drivable.
All in all, my life savings have been spent. My life car goals (from when I was 12) have been achieved and tomorrow I head back up to go and collect my effectively brand new car. Nervous, excited, relieved... all the emotions. The plan is to tax it for 6 months and enjoy the hell out of it. It got mapped at close to 300hp which is plenty for my needs. With minor work and maybe some octane addictive we could go well over 300 but Power was never the aim with this car... just look at it...
More to follow :)

Thanks for the kind words lads. Here's a little video CarLads did of the other day when i went to pick it up:

So not much to update. There was an issue with my central locking. It locked fine but didn’t unlock. So I popped off the driver’s door card and it was just a case of tightening one screw. Happy days.
I must tax it and the test is this weekend.

While it’s up at Stone I asked for a quote to get my rocker cover sprayed and guess what, they’re doing it for free by way of an apology.

Awesome stuff larz. Even looks sweet on the standard rims

I love the standard rims. I need 25mm-30mm spacers though really!
So there were a few tiny issues with the car including nct failure on missing split pins in the rear wishbones. Stone insisted on taking the car back and sorting it all out. They collected it Free of charge, did the work including putting it back on the rollers and dropped it back to me, Free of charge. Meanwhile I asked them for a quote to get the rocker cover done as it was annoying me and they did that too, Free of charge!

Looks a lot tidier now although it’s a pity they didn’t do the silver lettering on top like the original rocker covers had.
Also I ordered a few minor bits from nick Russell who works in Nissan. Bonnet rod grommet and plastic stays. Here’s a pick without them

And here are the bits installed

You can see some damage in this pic caused by not having it. The nct crown also slammed the bonnet shut with the rod sticking out and chipped the paint :(

Anyways, details make a car. I have some more original grommets and stuff on the way so will keep you posted.

Cheers! Yeah I’m not too showy about the car to be honest. I don’t really want to make a song and dance about it and although I like the great attention it is getting.
Quick nct pic :)

Gonna move the 180 into storage although I’m gonna put it through nct first and see if all is well with it. Did a lot of work recently so I can’t see many surprises popping up.

The Silvia is gonna be my daily for the foreseeable future. Yeah that’s right, including the winter :) I’ve been dailying s-bodies (with one r-body for a few months) for the past 5 years or so. That’s not gonna change any time soon :)

haha yeah i work in mahon :) I must put the equips back on it. And put the quick release steering wheel back in. Must also get some decent speakers because this car is a lot louder than what i'm used to :)

Working out here myself for the next few months. Cool to see something like this on the road, getting rarer and rarer to just see cool stuff driving around. Sounded well when i heard it anyway man.

Big job on. Long story short, i had no radio reception, 3 speakers weren’t working, power antenna wasn’t working and the radio was just crap before and I loved the AppRadio I have in the 180sx. I can’t justify buying a second one for the Silvia so I said I’d transfer it over, while tackling all the other jobs too [emoji4]

The old crappy front speakers had to go. They were ripped and all that. I know they’re a factory option but we need to be reasonable too. They’re getting the bin.

I bought some new speakers a while back:

I also bought some speaker brackets from the states a while back too. They line right up and took another headache away for me.

As well as fixing some wiring I also got the power antenna working again. Such a lovely detail and of course it does wonders for radio reception [emoji23]

That head unit suits the s13 interior so so well.

Nice job looks very clean. The radio really suits the interior.
I lowered the front. Car now scrapes going into the work car park so I need to get a job done on the exhaust. Feckin money pit [emoji23]
