Welllllllllll... Me again... with another black car...
I knew this car from a while back when Dave had it, and always thought there was something cool about it. I was shocked when i found out the one that i saw advertised on facebook was the same car :( Man it looks so sorry for itself. After a bit of to and fro on the price, I set up a viewing but wasn't going to go it alone and decided to bring someone who knows exactly what they're looking at.
Long story short, having done only 4,000km since the last NCT albeit they were very harsh miles from what i hear. This thing was used and abused. Exhaust is hanging off, scratches everywhere, tigerseal on the boot, stop sign shaped dent in the passo door, bent tie rod, bushings hanging out of it. Such a shame.
Much to my surprise compression tests came in at 150 across the board (one cylinder slightly lower) and no knocks or rattles. Even though this car was already a street scraper when Daly had it, it's rust free and in tidy enough condition underneath.
SPEC is nothing major (WHEN I GOT IT):
SR20DET
Coilovers
Some aftermarket arms
Cusco 3:9 two way
Standard interior
Air filter and exhaust
Walbro Fuel Pump
Now i did warn you guys.. Look away if you're squeamish.. Here are some pics:

The plan with this is pretty clear for me. Chuki kit, nice and original. Quick blast of paint. A winter slider that i can take to practice days and not be too particular about (famous last words). It may involve a tow hitch and trailer... that's all i'm saying for now.
Perfect winter slider...looks the the previous owner didnt exactly keep her between the ditches ha ha I'm sure you'll clean it up though!
Work cut out for ya there bud.
Still a car ya dont worry about is savage to own!!
Omg! What a state the last owner made of it! I wanted that car so bad when Daly owned it. Was tempted to try and see if he would swap for my R32 but it sold before I got the chance to put it past him.
Don't mess it up too bad Larz

haha don't assume the worst :) It's looking likely to get paint and all. chuki kit. should be tasty. trying to decide on the wheels. the meshes did look good on it...
Was in love with that car when Dave had it. Please bring it back to its former glory!
Ah bit of polish and it will be grand ;) ha ha
nothing 150 hours of hard graft wont fix, haha

Glad to hear. The meshes did look well, But I think since they've be done before on this car, you should add your own style. With 4 stud you do have a lot of options in the way of cool 15 and 16 inch wheels. Break out an SSR catalogue haha
Wheels aren't my top priority right now. I need to figure out which bushings i need to replace too. And i need to get the body tidied up for paint. I tracked down the original bumpers for this car so i'm going picking those up tonight. Front bumper was prepped for paint but I'll be giving this a coating anyways i would think.
Picked up a japspeed turbo elbow last night as there's a crack in the oem one. I may also have bought a PowerFC...
What direction are you going with bushings?
What direction are you going with bushings?
Most likely polybushing but i'm not 100% sure what i actually need yet. Need to have a good look underneath. Not going for solids anyways. It's never going to be a huge power car.

That, I'm delighted to hear. Was so sad when I saw how wrecked it had been after I sold it. Well it's in good hands now:)

Also Dave i know you're a fan but there's no need to have a load of my cars in your signature...
To anyone that's unfamiliar with this car, this was her when I had her, not long before I sold it.

I wouldn't mind but the guy I sold it to actually made it look really well, he fitted chuki skirts, pig nose bumper with lip, bomex rear wing, front 17x8.5 work wheels and 17x9.5 avs model 5s, I have to say it looked very good, but then he sold it to a young guy from west cork and that's who put it in the sorry state it's in now.
As I said in my previous post I'm just happy it's in good hands now.
Also Dave i know you're a fan but there's no need to have a load of my cars in your signature...
Haha! Fup off! :p
So yesterday evening i had a quick go at doing some work on the car. As many of ye know i tend to have a lot of 180sx parts lying around, so really want this car to be complete, albeit 'not mint'. 'Donedeal mint' will suit this car just fine.
Here are some before and after pics. The car isn't going to be cleaned until this is all closer to completion so ignore the grass and stuff. I reckon a previous owner carried hay around in it.
I removed:
the skirts... HUGE improvement.

I bought some wheels too but will show them when i have them in my posession.
Discovered that this thing has a raised arm-rest which should incorporate cupholders which were a factory option. Unfortunately someone threw out the cupholder part :(

I offered up the skirts and bumper and it already looks far better than the original pics. Again, haven't washed the car yet and haven't gotten a chance to take off all the stickers.

from this angle you'd almost mistake it for a decent car

Noice!!
I have the armrest too, they are like golddust, very hard comeby, Like yourself I'm missing the cuppholders but it doesnt bother me i just like having an armrest!
That's not an amp meter switch, it's a lazy eye kit.
That's not an amp meter switch, it's a lazy eye kit.
Well it was a 'headlights stuck open the whole time' kit because it did nothing haha. But does explain why the headlight motor button does nothing.
Well it was a 'headlights stuck open the whole time' kit because it did nothing haha. But does explain why the headlight motor button does nothing.
It must have been adjusted to that position. I got my bro one years ago for his S13 and to be honest it seemed like a lot of effort for what it did to get it right
Cut brown wire and put it on a button. alot simpler!! :D
I'm gonna put it back to factory settings. Sleepy eye looks good but in general i'll have the lights closed unless i'm using them.
Small update on this. The car is currently in with JDMGarage getting the following done:
1. paint roof and front bumper
2. straighten up the panel gapping on the wings where they meet the doors
3. Fit Japspeed Turbo Elbow
4. Fit nice exhaust system with silencers (gonna be a daily for a bit)
5. Change out the bent arms that were wrecked on the roads of clonakilty.
6. Fit my nismo powerbrace (glorified tension rod brackets)
7. Fix the pop up light retraction issue.
8. Fit fan cowling
9. Fit my new (new for me. they need a refurb though) SSR Mesh wheels (15x7.5 and 15x8)
10. New tyres all round - 195/55/15
11. Full suspension setup, tracking, alignment, ride height, etc. Fast road setup, not too low.
12. Steering rack also needs replacing, so getting that done too
13. fit A'Pexi air filter
Hopefully that'll all be done this week and it'll be a lot more drivable.
Meanwhile i've tidied up the interior which is now complete:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n638/Laurence_Dusoswa/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12027190_10205182543145078_8397241611584568660_o.j pg (http://s1143.photobucket.com/user/Laurence_Dusoswa/media/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12027190_10205182543145078_8397241611584568660_o.j pg.html)
Sorted out the boot. It used to look like there were bales carried around in it:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n638/Laurence_Dusoswa/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12029591_10205182543505087_3193307996849760200_o.j pg (http://s1143.photobucket.com/user/Laurence_Dusoswa/media/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12029591_10205182543505087_3193307996849760200_o.j pg.html)
Also fitted these badass 180sx mats (Nissan Prince Fukuoka tailored dealership mats) to it as i feel they suit the car to a tee:

I've removed all of those stickers that daly put on there too... STORY OF MY LIFE... ya may take them off the twin cam before you sell that on to save me the hassle down the line :p
NCT booked for the 5th of November... 1 week today... gulp...

love how clean the interior is lad, she will be sorted in no time.
Cheers yeah I wanna keep it pretty clean but no point in going much further with the interior when the exterior is still rough as nails. The carpets and seats could do with a shampoo but all in good time...
I've a nice head unit to go into it alright but that'll be an update in its own right. New exhaust is on, I heard it tonight it looks and sounds bang on. Lots of little stuff to do but rather than tipping away at it and making mistakes I've gotten someone else to do it. I'm going to tax it Monday. So hope to be driving it next week. New tyres are on the wheels.
Itching to start driving it. I've never had a turbo rwd car (other than the e60) on the road.

its a different kind of love, the spool of a turbo down the motorway etc is class.
NCT tomorrow. cutting it fine but lots of the work is already done. It'll be going in with mismatched bumpers but sure they wont fail me for that :p they'll deffo fail me for other stuff though haha
So we didn't make the NCT. One of the rear coilovers is seized and 3 lads and 6 foot bars couldn't free them. So I'm on the hunt for new/used rear coilovers.
Also, while doing the 'easy' part, servicing the car, the oil filter was a pain to get off. Turns out it was cross threaded on there. So now it wont hold a filter and when it starts up it spits out the filter. Nice hatchet job by a previous owner. I hope to have a 'new' oil filter housing tomorrow. What a pain.
The suspension setup and alignment hasn't been completed yet and the labour costs are mounting up. That said, I like to get things professionally done because it gives me the peace of mind when i drive it or when it comes time to sell it. I should just have bought that midnight purple kouki 180 that's for sale on here though. This is proving to be an expensive route.
Think it got an oil and filter from the guy I sold it to..not the guy you bought it off...that's some balls though!
Ye that's a headache alright dude. Ah I'm sure u will do it justice
Picked up rear tein coilovers from petko and also an oil filter housing. Hopefully the oil filter housing will get done over the weekend and the coilovers on monday as soon as they arrive.
Hopefully we can swing the NCT this week. I've people biting at my ankles wanting to buy the skyline...

Can't wait to see this finished but I did give ya the moredoor bug
Now,...finally managed to read through it :D
but you keep me updated on it anyway haha
i still cant believe what the prev. owner did to it after Dave sold it.....makes me really angry!!!!
but in good hands now, looking forward to see it back together again :)
I should have just bought that MNP Kouki 180 (http://www.driftireland.ie/forum/showthread.php/45423-kouki-180sx-for-sale!!)... Not even joking at this stage.
Anyways, it's a labour of love. The car still looks rough because it has a mismatching front bumper and quite possibly the worst paint i've ever seen on an s-body. Drift cars included. To save you guys a LOAD of pics and stories, here's a list of the things I've gotten done (professionally) since my last update.
Got a new steering rack installed
Oil + Filter because i have no idea when it was serviced last
Topped up the coolant
got the exhaust and turbo elbow fitted
Topped up power steering fluid
Replace spark plugs
Replaced fan belts
Installed rear coilovers
Got brake line brackets made up
Got a battery bracket made up
Installed my nismo power brace (tension rod brackets)
Replaced the rear top front arm
Installed fan cowling
Replaced the subframe collars
NCT Prep
Got reg plates
Topped up gearbox oil
Changed the gearstick gator (the rubber one, not the pretty one :p)
Got the wiring checked and replaced where corrosion or poor wiring was found
Replaced the oil filter housing
Fitted new Wheels and Tyres
Fitted new air filter
Full alignment and fast road setup
Heading for NCT this morning. We'll see if that throws up anything weird but i hope to be driving it soon as i'm without a car. I sold the r33.
EDIT: NCT PASSED! WOOOOO!

well done lad now more pics please!
Hard to find daylight at the moment and it's not pretty as i say. I've a load of aesthetic bits that need to be done.
some bit of work and money! Atleast it past nct though and it's in the right hands now! What's the next step now?
Yeah man! serious bills. But a good quality car is worth it. I don't like when a car is cosmetically 'perfect' but has loads of stuff wrong with it. This one is mechanically and electrically perfect now. Fresh NCT so it's just a case of insurance and tax and we're good to go. With regard plans. Where to begin???
1. Fit front lip
2. Fit Kouki spats
3. Fit my new CarPlay head unit
4. Body repair from where the previous owner drifted into a stop sign
5. Panel alignment: the front wings look like koguchi wings with the amount of gap on them. That needs to change
6. PAINT. Black again. Did i mention i like black cars?
that's the immediate goal.
I've also bought:
1. z32 AFM
2. Apexi PowerFC
3. Replacement turbo for if and when this one blows
It just goes to show that some people have no respect for cars. This thing was neglected so so badly. Especially when it comes to giving a car a glimpse of its hay day, I like to have the right people do the right jobs on my cars so I got pretty much everything done professionally in this instance. And it has paid off. The car is a dream to drive.

Now the fun starts. I picked up this a few weeks back and couldn't wait to install it. FINALLY got around to installing it last night. More pics will follow once i get to my car during daylight hours

The ride height is high. The car is far from hellaflush or stanced, nor will it ever be as far as i'm concerned. The engine is great and i've opted for a grippy setup. I love the SR20det and its ability to spin up wheels and allow you to go sideways, but this time I've opted for a setup that glues the car to the road. Grippy tyres all around make this thing a great handler now that i added some bracing and replaced some arms underneath. I've got front and rear strut braces to go in too. I'll be meeting with a guy who reckons he can paint it pretty cheap in the coming week or so. This will never be a show car. I plan to track this whenever i feel like giving it a blast, as well as drive it as a daily and enjoy it.
Here's how it stands right now:

So as mentioned, after months of drooling and watching youtube videos I bit the bullet and bought this bad boy: The Pioneer SPH-DA120 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/AppRadio/AppRadio+4+(SPH-DA120))
It's such a nice device for the price. Pity it doesn't support wireless carplay but apple CarPlay itself is awesome. The lights can match to any colour so I was able to match the off light green of the a/c unit and clocks. Nice touch that.

Rather than chopping wires and that, i just bought myself some harnesses to make the install easy. It retained dim functionality, electronic antenna retraction/expansion, etc.
Firstly for the antenna i bought a two prong to single antenna adapter on eBay (click image for listing):

Secondly, the actual nissan to ISO adapter. Plug and play, just remember to ground the black wire.

Fantastic unit so far. Great investment and really does help the interior a lot. I'll get some pics of it in action once i have the backgrounds and themes all set up to match the car.
One thing that always annoyed me in my old drift car was that the lever to release the boot hatch didn't pop open the boot like you'd expect. I lived with that for over 2 years because feck it, it was a drift car. I wasn't surprised when this car had exactly the same issue. You pull the lever to release the boot... nothing happens. You need to pull the lever AND lift the hatch at the same time. A two man job unless you wedge something under the boot release lever.
I stripped off the rear boot carpet and had a look at the mechanism. With the boot hatch up i could hear that the mechanism was working, so i assumed that it wasn't just the cable that had let go. I started to take out the boot latch itself and realised that it could move up and down slightly once you loosened the top two 10mm bolts. Turns out that if you move the whole receiver part down about 3-4mm, the mechanism works again. Why is beyond me, but this might help out someone who has the same issue.
Anyways, that's pretty boring for you guys but i'm delighted with myself. I don't get to do much manual labour so fixing something on my car (no matter how small) is a big thing for me :p
I also fitted these original kouki rear spats:

Boot latch is probably due to cable stretch over the years maybe?
Cars making good progress! Some difference in a short space of time!
Spats are deadly on it. Starting to take shape alright. Call me crazy but I kinda like the rough and ready look of it, super character in the flesh.
Got the radio too after. Awesome.
The rough look is not too bad, but will never be as nice as some fresh paint. Spats are deadly on it, i love the way they complete the rear end. I fitted an oem rubber chuki front lip too so that i can rub speedbumps again. It looks great, but i really need to paint that front bumper and sort the exposed metal on the roof. I'm meeting a guy tomorrow about getting a cheap paint job done on it. People always say that a cheap paint job isn't worth doing, and that may be the case. But in this case, the car needs something. protection if anything. I'd rather have runs and slight mismatch than what i have now. If i could afford to go the whole hog paint-wise, i would.
The filters is for 90s feels and to distract from the paint.

Looking good now LarZ,, like the detail your going into,,
Hope you get on Ok with the paintwork,, reading through the other lads threads there and both didn't fair out too good with the cheap paintjobs,,
Yep you're right. I've decided that a 'cheap' paint job for a 180sx just can't cost less than 1500euro. So i updated my budget a bit. Watch this space :)
So i've been quiet for the past 2 weeks. Some of you probably saw the car in the car park at UD just 12 days ago. Where do i start...
A while back I put a wanted post up on a facebook group (as i tend to do) and asked if anyone would spray this car cheap and easy, rough and ready, and as quickly as possible. I got all sorts of interested even though i specified a budget of no more that a thousand euro. Most of the people interested in doing the job were spare time, make-shift shed type of people. which is understandable at that budget. Now bear in mind that the car had dents, scratches, tiger seal and misaligned panels.
One day I got a message on facebook from a Pat Kerry Quinn, who is based in Churchfield industrial estate, Blackpool, in Cork. He didn't say much, and posted a link to this video: https://m.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv% 3DNrL9c4as8jU&h=uAQFj0uHo&s=1
I was impressed. It's not a blockbuster movie trailer but it gives a good sense of what they're about. He approached me. He knew my budget. And seemed hungry for the work. After a few back and forth communications, mainly just organising a time for him to actually see the car in the flesh so that he could give an accurate quote, I finally got to him on Friday, the 20th of November. He's a lovely guy, fairly quiet, and boy does he love what he does. He rubbed all the panels with his hands and i could practically see the cogs turning in his head. He said to me that this job needs to be a slightly more expensive job, but it will be worth it. I'll happily tell people the price if they send me a message. I just don't want to broadcast it on here. I agreed to the price and it wasn't even that much above my budget. I had another requirement though, the time-frame... "No problem", he said. I wanted it done within 2 weeks. Those of you who have been through this know what a tall ask this was, but it's my daily driver, so i need it.
"Drop it to me Monday and we'll get started straight away". I had the money luckily, so i took him up on the offer. He told me he'd send me updates whenever he made some progress and he wasn't lying. I have great photographic documentation to show the whole process. This gave me great peace of mind and a great confidence that this was going to be a good move.
Within hours i got photos of the car being stripped. I'll post those photos at a later stage. So i dropped the car to him on the Monday, 23rd of November. I picked it up on Wednesday, the 2nd of December. Yup... 9 days later. NINE!!! Amazing. And you would assume that to get it done in that time, corners would be cut and quality would suffer. But no, this paint job was amazing value. He had 3 or 4 guys working on it with him. Also bear in mind the dents, scratches, tiger seal, terrible existing paint, misaligned panels and even surface rust that 'decorated' the car. He even rolled the arches to make them smooth. He sprayed the kit separately so that i could take it off if i wanted to go for the un-kitted look that i'm oh so fond of. It really just all fell into place... In only 9 days...

9 is the magic number it seems because I only bought this car 9 weeks ago. Delighted is an understatement. See you at Auto Heroes tomorrow :)
Sounds like you definitely found a genuine worker larz. Was going to say stick some proper pictures up but sure I'll see the car tomorrow.
Please put up pictures of the work in progress from the panel beaters! Glad to hear youre happy with the work
Fair play to the panel beater, quick turn around, I was waiting over 6 months for mine, he has a good set up by the looks a things.
Car looks class Larz, you'd never think it was the same car that it was 9 weeks ago. Keep it up man
thanks lads! Yeah it's a bit of a transformation alright :) Here are some pics that were sent to me during the 9 day paint job. As you can see, the facilities are top notch and the finish is bang on too.
Stripping it the day i dropped it off

Love it, needs a wangan or whatever they call it these days.
Reminds me of one I had years ago. A good drive able 180 is probably the most rewarding cars to drive out there.
Enjoy it fella
Thanks for the great feedback guys. It does drives so well. I'm weak for it lol :p Not going the route of a wangan/bomex spoiler definitely, I'm not a fan. I like the boot clean although if i found the right roof spoiler i'd consider it. Something to complement the lines of the kouki rear spats. Next on the list are:
1. front bumper lenses. I want USDM amber lenses. The styling isn't modern enough for these clear dmax style lenses.
2. Restore the wipers. they just need a lick of paint really. New blades would be nice too. They need calibration too as they're about 2 or 3 teeth out.
3. Fix the rear right spat a bit better. It keeps letting go for some reason. I don't want to tiger seal it but will try some heavier tape.
4. Dash has cracks, needs to go
5. Steering wheel is horrible. That rally style yellow centre marker makes no sense on road cars imo.
6. Replace some other interior plastics. ash tray cover, passenger side kick plate (ecu cover), gear stick leather gator
7. Straighten up the headlight brackets - the fit is ok, but not factory flush.
8. Still on the hunt for a HKS Hi Power Silent exhaust.
9. Fit my new speakers and speaker mounts
10. Source a rear wiper arm seal. Still haven't found one.
11. Fit my OEM chuki front spot lights :)
Projects never end and there's always room for improvement. I never thought i'd enjoy a car this much though. So much so that i'm on the lookout for an SR20det setup for my ps13.
Also, i updated the original post with up to date spec list.
Fair play you've really saved this!! The amber lenses will work really well! Love me some old school!!

Before Christmas I had put a question up on the SilviaRepublic FB page as i'd seen a few Chuki 180s with very tidy looking fog lights. I wanted to know what brand they were or if they were a factory option as they all looked similar. Here's an example:
http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6197/6118498047_889466040f_b.jpg
They look epic. I did some searching as they all looked similar and i wanted the exact model. Low and behold, they turned out to be an OEM factory option, despite almost everyone on SilviaRepublic saying they didn't exist and weren't ever offered by Nissan. This was music to my ears as i love a challenge to find some rare parts. I put out the feelers and much to my surprise, within a few hours i had sourced a pair. In ireland no less. Complete with wiring and everything. Seemed too good to be true! But it wasn't. I have them now, I just need to get some dry weather to fit them in. Here they are:

Can't wait to fit them.
I've also sourced some of the niggly little bits that I've been searching for. I got the boot rubber seal for the wiper arm. Also picked up the rear facing washer jet and the little handle for my passenger seat recliner function. All stupid stuff, but it's what makes a good car great.

Some attention to detail in this build. Shaping up to be super clean!
Nice find on the fogs and it's the little details that's makes ya appreciate the car. Especially if it's your daily
Glad to see the car being all nice and shiny again :)
looks so good in real life also and cant wait to see them fog lights installed haha
Car just looks so right with the little details
So I got pulled for not having the front number plate on the car. He said i 'might' be getting a summons. BALLS :p Also, my turbo packed it in on Sunday. It's in the garage right now getting a replacement fitted. Staying t25 because I can't be spending loads on it right now.
Thanks for all the kind words everyone. I ordered USDM bumper lenses, can't wait for them to arrive. Still haven't fitted the speakers because of the weather. Must fit my strut braces too. Although i consider the car 'complete', It's never going to be finished :)
Love those lights I had read about them before!
It's lookin great now man, is a car ever 'finished'? Haha
Tell the garda the plate just fell off. You'll never see that summons haha
Loving the car.
Ya I wouldn't be too worried about that summons, you'd never know though! Oh and I agree that a car is never finished hahaha
My USDM lenses eventually arrived. Delighted with them to be honest. I know it's controversial but I prefer them to the oem JDM 50/50 bumper lenses and definitely much prefer fully amber lenses to the clear DMAX ones that were on it.
With the lenses i also got the bumper lens loom extensions. I couldn't find out online whether I'd be able to keep both the parking light AND indicator functionality as the USDM lenses only allow for one bulb. Or whether they'd even plug in properly at all! Another thing that i really wanted was to be able to run the parking lights without having the pop-ups on. For some reason I couldn't do that with the DMAX lenses, but the wiring was a little hacked together on them anyways, hence splashing out on the bulb wiring too. Anyways, that's enough nonsense about my OCD about how they light up. Long story short, the parking lights are good and bright and when you indicate the pulse nicely. So they'll pass NCT and all. No wiring, cutting or lens swapping involved. result.

And here's how they look on the car:

Deadly! Which C&C pics? The ones i put on FB? I'm presuming i know you in real life :p
Really like the amber as well larz, breaks up the all the black
Cheers dude! Yeah i love it myself. I love when you tell people about your plans and they're like "I dunno about that man" and then when you do it they see what you meant :) Not saying you ever doubted me :p
Like the USDM sidelights. I got the same for the MX-5 and they make such a cool subtle difference!
Cheers everyone! Wheel refurb is on the cards, but i'm in no hurry. Right now i'm still trying/struggling to get my hands on a HKS Silent Hi Power exhaust. That's my main priority really. When i find some spare time and some dry time i'll finish installing the new speakers. It also needs a good interior valet.
Also I'm picking up some front arch liners at the weekend.
Small update. Managed to track down some elusive interior bits. Some before and afters:
New handbrake sleeve

Thanks for the feedback guys :) Keep it coming :p
It has been about a month and half since i posted. during this time i took the car out on its maiden track voyage. It was a grip voyage not a drift session. I absolutely love the way the car performed. Anyone who is interested should check out this video:

Any feedback appreciated :)
looking awesome bro, i really really like this car
Looking well larz. Had a quick look at it last autohereos. Liking it a lot. Took ml the 32 out for a grip session as well and had a blast.
It was my birthday 2 weeks ago and I splurged on a pair of seats as I hinted at in a previous post. When I brought the car out on track at auto heroes 4, it was made very clear to me that standard seats just don't cut the mustard. So the hunt was on. After weeks of searching on facebook, adverts and donedeal, all I seemed to find were seats with holes and tears in them which the owners assured me were a 'quick cheap fix' yet they haven't bothered their arse getting them fixed yet still want a tonne of money for them. The few nice sets of seats I found, the sellers decided against selling them after reaching out to me saying that they'd sell them to me. I think it might be getting too easy to sell these days and buyers are no longer the main 'time wasters'. that rant is for another day :)
Here's what my interior USED to look like:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n638/Laurence_Dusoswa/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12973451_10206207890298116_4278159598868330715_o.j pg (http://s1143.photobucket.com/user/Laurence_Dusoswa/media/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12973451_10206207890298116_4278159598868330715_o.j pg.html)
I wanted something that looked factory, but wasn't too common either. no fixed seats, weird patterns or blues or mismatched colours. Love the look of the starlet fishnets and for some reason I got the idea of evo X seats although they probably would have looked out of place in my 180. Eventually a fella in Mayo got on to me saying he'd sell a pair of seats that came in in a vzr. After a bit of negotiating on the price (i caved and just accepted his initial price :p) I arranged to pick them up at Mondello. The pics I had seen looked decent and I had transferred him a deposit.
So I picked them up at the last auto heroes and was blown away by them. They may as well be new to be honest. One last piece of background info: My wife drives my 180 regularly and she's short so needs to sit close to the steering wheel. I've had issues before with aftermarket seats so was determined to have a proper factory sliding range for the driver's seat at least. Which could only mean one thing. Don't buy cheap rails and don't go drilling rails.
Here's the bolt pattern I needed:
http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n638/Laurence_Dusoswa/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12983265_10206214108573569_3347349503594661373_o.j pg (http://s1143.photobucket.com/user/Laurence_Dusoswa/media/Facebook/The%20ugly%20duckling%20180sx/12983265_10206214108573569_3347349503594661373_o.j pg.html)
I found a passenger side bride s14 rail luckily here in Cork, thanks to lady89 on here. I offered it up to the seat and looked a perfect fit. I had a driver's s13 super low bride rail but that wouldn't fit, so eventually I was contacted by none other than Andrew32 (owns the site now) and he had exactly what i needed. A genuine Recaro driver's side s-body rail. Delighted!
Driver's rail (needs a drop of paint):

Huge shout out to Nick Russell who sent me seat bolts to fit the rails to the seats. Legend.
The important stuff:
Seats: Recaro SR3 Trail Black
Rail P/S: s14 Bride rail NO28SR
Rail D/S: s13 Recaro rail

mind me asking how much you paid for the seats? I'm after something along these lines. my e36 is full black leather so want something black that won't look out of place
Yeah man no worries. Paid 550 for the pair of seats and 240 for the rails so 790 total. Dread to think what it would all cost new :p
Recaros look the job Larz! Nicely done.
those seats really set it off well. glad you stayed away from the eve x seats.
A part of me still thinks that Evo x seats in an s-body would be awesome. The're quite like the Bride Cuga. But it would want to be a kouki at the very least, if not a big kitted car. If i found a set cheap i deffo would have tried them, but seat rails are supposed to be a right pain with the newer oem recaros. They're bad enough as it is with the older type.
Thanks for the great feedback lads :)
No real update. Still daily driving this and absolutely loving it. Well, no update is a lie. I may have bought a garrett 2835r turbo and nismo 550cc injectors. should go nicely with my walbro fuel pump, Brand new powerFC and my brand new z32 AFM. However, I'm loving standard power so much, I might just keep those power mods to make something special out of my ps13. So no immediate plans to fit them.
I picked up a Tanabe Limit (Jasma) exhaust. It's not a HKS Hi Power Silent but it will hopefully do. I'll post some pics of that when i polish it up a bit.
Other than that, Here are some pics of me out and about, enjoying my daily driver :)

The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that i'm not running my kouki spats at the moment. Reason being that I didn't have them fitted properly in the first place. I need to get a heat gun to the rear bumper so that I can work out a slight kink which forces the spat away from the body. I don't have a shed and it has rained quite a lot lately so I haven't made the time to be honest. It still looks good without them in my opinion, but i feel the spats really set it off.

Nice this is the type of 180 i want haha standard lookin but low on 15" 16"
No major updates on this. Getting rid of the raised cupholder centre console compartment. It wrecks my head when I change gear while driving it in anger. My funny bone is wrecked from it.
It flew through the NCT recently but it's still raised and looking crap. I have some minor bits in with the painter to touch up so I should have it looking great again soon. Still meaning to swap out the dash for a non-cracked one and get the wheels refurbed.
It was a great compliment when Dave Daly (who owned the car 3 years ago) drove it and told me I had done an amazing job with it. He couldn't get over how well it drove.
Still driving this daily but it will be coming off the road in November and parking up beside the ps13. I have a baby due in January so I'm going to have to be seen to make some bit of sacrifice :p Need to find another daily. Something 'sensible'. I have my eye on a mid engined rear wheel drive car. Yep... Sensible... Because I'm looking for a smart brabus. I've always wanted one :) Don't give me that look :p
so it's now november and i just taxed this again... Can't put it off the road yet... the baby will have to put up with it!
so much to update in this. Please reply if you want me to go to the effort :)
Quick update on this. Baby is happy and healthy and well over a year later the 180sx is STILL taxed and insured and STILL my daily. I just love the thing! It has gotten loads of new little bits here and there.

NCT has been a bit of a battle this time with tiny stupid things going wrong. an imbalance in the front coilovers and lack of a helper spring in the rears causing the springs to be loose when the car is jacked up prompted me to get new coilovers which i still haven't fitted. I got Pedders Extreme Xa coilovers. They came up for sale relatively cheap, and they're brand new.

Other than that, my meshes need a refurb but the silvia is eating all my money so i've gone super OEM and put some linglong rubber on some OEM wheels that i have. And I think the car actually looks unreal. It's a nice change. I need to put the kit back on though

Life has been crazy with the baby arriving and my time is very limited at the moment. I'm lucky to be able to have this on the road all the time, otherwise i wouldn't be able to enjoy it at all.
Delighted to see you use this daily man. I always say I'm going to run something cool daily but I always end up doing stupid things and spending to much money 😂

When this and your PS get parked beside eacthother I think it'll almost be an over-load of old school cool
Yes, keep updating it :)
its so cool that its still a daily, i hope it will stay that way for a loooooooong while!
This has definitely come along ways since you bought it. Did you ever do anything with the Nismo rims I dropped to you?

They're still waiting to be fitted to this. They'll be getting a refurb from sodablast as soon as i can afford it. They're going to be my winter wheels for both s13s depending on which one i have on the road :)

Yeah there are no plans to change that. Going to keep this insured as the daily and insure the ps13 as a classic.

The first thing anyone should do when they want a nice fast road car is to get something and get NCT on it and start driving it. Too many people spend years building their dream car and then sell it in a moment of madness that they regret forever more. And then the prices go up by so much each year that they don't ever buy a new one out of spite :p
I have been chasing a HKS Hi Power Silent for many many years now. And been quite vocal about it, and thankfully someone spotted one for sale on the sxoc forums. He was in the UK and there was no price on the ad but I messaged him anyways. Pics looked ok, a little bit used looking but no leaks. I ended up buying it and getting it shipped very reasonably.

Those of you who know me know I’m a wannabe driveway mechanic with fairy soft hands. But I have a go anyways. So yesterday I took off my old exhaust and offered up the new one and bollocks anyways...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180312/6a62bba1dcc5ddd4f2ead2acc546e88b.jpg
Turns out it’s an s14 exhaust [emoji20] what a balls!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180312/b2c2847c788feae5fddbde886751a5ef.jpg
While I was under the car I noticed that my downpipe was a bit loose from the elbow so I tidied that up too.
Anyways, now i have my dream exhaust for the wrong car. Now my skill set and toolset ends here so I like to admit defeat and give the job to someone who knows what they are doing. So I took the car to automania here in ballincollig this morning. They custom fabricate exhausts and the main goal is to put the hi power silent boxes into the s13/old exhaust. By whatever means they deem necessary.

Did you get sorted in the end now? :(
What a crazy 24 hours... got a call around this time yesterday to say “your exhaust is ready”. I was a little bit surprised as I hadn’t had any word on costs or anything so asked them how much it was gonna cost me....
€250!!! I had to walk there but on the way decided that if the exhaust sounds good and fits well then so be it...
Turns out they didn’t do what I had asked them to do at all, they simply tried to fit the s14 exhaust to my car and it was just a horrible piece of work... I expressed that I wasn’t happy but they said they’d fix it so I left it with them...
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180313/f3ac440246d94bcd5832dc712c0c5092.jpg
The rear looked fine though
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180313/121773a2225ec5beb5f033a3fc32e23c.jpg
But there was no way I’m gonna clear a speed bump or even get into a multi-storey carpark with that middle box hanging so low...
Last night I had an absolutely horrible night’s sleep. Couldn’t stop thinking about the 3 cuts and 2 welds that they wanted me to pay €250 for and the terrible standard of work that they want to put their name on. I decided that first thing this morning I was gonna go down there and get my car back. I hated not having it in my driveway.
Long story short, they hadn’t worked on my car yet so it was ready to go in it’s saggy exhaust state. Fine by me and after a bit of an argument i did end up paying them €175 for the shitty work just so I could get my car back from ransom.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180313/181b38c6322a5cd24e30bf2a7f23361d.jpg
The middle box is sitting below the prop so can’t go higher. But they should have relocated that to the side where there’s a nice recess for the standard middle box to sit.
Anyways, ye’re probably sick of this post now [emoji23].
On a brighter note, they exhaust sounds sensationally good. I just need it tidied up underneath.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i08i5U8Z4II
Long story short (again), automania in ballincollig are a bunch of absolute robbing cowboys and I will never set foot in there again.
Hopefully my buddies can sort out the exhaust soon. We’re gonna throw it up on a lift and put their skills to the test while I make tea.

Sounds like a nightmare. Its amazing how hard it is to find a place to carry out work properly even though you give them full details on what you want.
Sent from my ONE A2003 using Tapatalk
So last night, my buddy alan and I got to work on the exhaust. I had explained to him that I had had the exhaust off and the downpipe and cat sat lovely and flush with the old exhaust and now they were a bloody disgrace, coming down at an angle and about 2” below where they should have been. Turns out the turbo elbow to downpipe was completely loose! Massive blow and they didn’t even fix it. Talk about not having pride in your work.
They cut the back pipe and shortened it, and the geniuses didn’t cop the fact that now the flange sits right under the half shafts! Dumbasses!!!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180315/650cb39635c8f81ebbcba7e35a4a9046.jpg
The exhaust was so low because they messed up the flange angle where it joins the cat. So when you tightened the bolts, it pulled down the exhaust! Novices. And to add insult to injury, they didn’t use a single gasket and it took us ages just to remove the exhaust putty that they used to mask their shitty fitment. Check this out:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180315/1b0eb1ff95c7875a92b6c74c3ea6e20d.jpg
Ridiculous. With a tiny cut, we got enough bend to match up the flange correctly after some careful thought. Alan welded it up after making a little bracket. I didn’t get a photo of the finished product but it was bang tidy. Here is a pic of him mocking it up:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180315/bfe1dec7b4941d0210c858e7f82b63f1.jpg
He rounded the corners, cut the excess and even sprayed it with some Edd China. With a few new gaskets we were ready to start it all back up again and hey presto, no bangs, no rattles, no knocks. We didn’t even need to relocate the box because we were able to raise it by at least 1”, possibly and inch and half. Which under an s-body is the world of a difference.
Anyways, that’s enough about my boring exhaust :) I was able to use my car again today and I’m absolutely delighted. Need to do the coilovers and camber arms soon too because I could really do with some nct!

Holy moly thats fairly bad.
YAY for Alan!!! haha
I dont think i could stay calm after seeing this being done to my car
Absolute butchers. It’s like everything in this country... if you want it done right you have to do it yourself. Some people are only out to make quick money and couldn’t give a f$$k about your standards.

Yeah it’s sad that one fella with minimal experience was able to fix a problem that a self proclaimed exhaust fabrication shop put their name to.
Anyways I’m delighted to be driving it again even though the whole ordeal only took 3 days. That’s a long time to be without your daily driver. I have oem wheels on it for now and full oem look as I really like how simple it looks and it’s easy to live with as a daily.

Automania are a bunch of fucking morons. When I read that you were taking it there I was like Oooooh Jesus. If anyone's willing to Chuck out that brutal quality work then they're clearly not competent nor could they give enough of a shit to actually do the job right. I was relieved to see that you went back and got it the next morning.
I didn't know they had such a bad reputation. cowboys. they are still around purely because of their location i think..
So I changed the battery the other day as my old one was knackered. €56 delivered from micksgarage.ie! It arrived the next day even though I didn’t choose next day delivery.

The bay really needs a freshen up. There was no battery tray but I sourced one a while back so I put that in place.

Here’s the finished product. #ratlook

I gave the two cars a quick wash on Saturday

Then I got notions...

So this is what it looks like now. 17s are so much harsher for daily driving and soooo much easier to spin up in the wet.

Other than that I tried to tidy up the rear spats a bit but really need to just tigerseal them in place because they keep coming loose no matter what I do.

That looks really good, even without the rear spats in place. Excellent job on bringing this thing back from near doom!
I think im starting to like it now ha
Gave the exterior a good clean this morning. Re-fitted the skirts as the car really needs them in my opinion.

I must put the front lip back on but jacking up the car becomes an ordeal when that’s on as I need to drive up on planks to get at the nose.
Also, I like easy cleaning products and this tyre dressing is the business!

Quick before and after

I’m gonna swap back out the front bumper lenses for the Amber ones as they’re easy to swap for nct.
Other than that i STILL have to fit the new coilovers and I need to sort the steering rack gators and hopefully I don’t have a larger issue to deal with there other than a small leak.
Interior needs a serious clean too as I’ve gone lazy in recent months. Interior actually probably hasn’t gotten a clean in a year! Disgraceful...
Ordered some 3M double sided tape too to stick the kouki rear spats on properly hopefully once and for all. Will keep you posted.

that exhaust was a a joke how do these places get away with that shit!!
loving it on the oem wheels tho :D
So a few pages back (http://www.driftireland.com/forum/showthread.php/46410-LarZ-Black-180sx-(The-Ugly-Duckling)/page7) I detail how I came across oem Chuki fog lights here in Ireland and got them fitted. That’s about 2 years ago now but I hadn’t wired them up until tonight!
My car was lucky enough to have the oem fog light button from the factory. That’s why I wanted them so badly.

So I’m a driveway wannabe mechanic as many of you know. So even the thoughts of doing some basic wiring really frustrated me. But having given the Silvia so much love recently I feel like the 180 has lagged behind and needs to step it up a notch again.
I got it all wired up last night after finding the original parts of the loom that were tucked and cable tied away. I was getting 12v on the wires when I turned on the fog light switch. Result. But the bulbs were blown. So I had to source bulbs!
They’re basically h3 bulbs but they have a round bullet connector rather than the spade connector we’re all used to
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180509/fa71edd314a2626e03cf34b1a85e545c.jpg
And the bullet connectors look similar to the ones we can buy in the shops here but I said I’d try to salvage the existing ones. So I pried them open and fitted the new bulb’s wire. As they were recycled they didn’t sit great so I dropped in a lump of solder to seal the deal [emoji4] I then wrapped them in insulation tape and shrink wrapped them.

So the fogs can be turned on independently and light up the dash and the running lights. Here’s a video to show the different combinations

Another little update. I’ve been dodging the nct for a while because I’ve not been making the time to do some basic jobs on my car. Recently I said enough is enough so I roped in my buddy alan to give me a hand. He ended up doing most of the work.
We installed brand new camber arms at the rear, brand new pedders extreme coilovers sorted the steering rack gaiters. I must book the car in for retest now.

Haven’t adjusted the height yet. The car is going into hibernation next month when I get the Silvia taxed. I’d love to store it away with a fresh nct so that it doesn’t become a chore to bring back out of hibernation [emoji23]
Must get the alignment done too, hopefully Friday.
On the lookout for a nice pair of S15 front seats for it too. I had to sell the Recaros to fund the Silvia project.
