View Full Version : Volvo 940 2.3 Turbo Estate First Build and Drifter
So wanted to get into drifting with a while now but wanted to start on a budget amd with a bit of power... Not a huge fan of the BMWs... Nothing wrong with them just wanted something different so choose the Volvo estate!!
Picked the car up down in Wexford a few weeks ago and came with a second automatic 940 estate with no engine and a few other spare bits and pieces!! It was a road car which still has tax and test but was converted to commercial!!
2.3 Turbo engine which i thought was ok for power?? Got it home and took it for a spin 10 mins later diff burst

So back to the shed up on stands to inspect and a big hole in the rear casing!! It was very wet around it before hand and the factvthe the filler plug was siezed solid i assume it was leaking and was never topped up or else it was just welded shit!! The 2 sun gears inside were blown outta it completely so with a bit of cleaning and and alot of fishing with a magnet it was ready to weld back up again!! Welded the 2 planet gears to the the casing and the shaft in the middle that the sun gears rotate on... God it all done up nice and solid... It saved me using my only spare axle that i may need some other time...
Began stripping out all the interior down to just the dash left... The heap of stuff that came out of it was huge so hopefully lots of weight saved... Cut out the boot floor and rear pockets, also gives easier acess to working on the diff, cut out the inside of the the doors but left the drivers one alone for saftey reasons, made up brakets and fitted a Sparco Rev fixed back seat one the lads had, Got a 6 point TRS Harness of Declan Callanan in galway and a .625 18" Hydro off Seamie. Made a bracket around the gearstick for the hydro, made all new copper brake lines from the abs pump back to the rear axle, got new flexible brake hoses and a set of mintex pads!!
So said i'd give the car a start to see how it was as i hadn't heard it running in 2 weeks, on with the ignition turned the key and no start everything seemed fine but after alot of head scrathing put it down to the immboilser kicking in with all my stripping and wire cutting!! Didn't no where or how to by pass it so gave Paul Twomey from PT Motorsport Eletronics a ring and he called out next morning and had it sorted in an hour or 2!! Sound man to deal with and really good at his job!!
So with the car running again i noticed there was a blow from the exhaust manifold gasket...never noticed it before from the noise of the viscous fan... Got new gaskets off Johnson and Perrots fitted them and straight away by just revving the car it even sounded like there was loads more power!! So gave it a service, usual oil, filter and plugs!! Dropped it down on the ground and said i'd take for a spin up and down the lane... Some difference in power and its really light!! Forgot to say it has proper vmax lower springs fitted too!!
Also fitted bonnet pins for easier access!! Still loads of bits of tidying and small jobs to do but heres pics of it as it is now!!

Nice one! Myself and my mates got one for the craic. They are weapons. Stuck a boost controller on it and now its boosting 1.2 bar. Seems to be running ok still.
Manual boost controller some job on ours hai
I'm running standard boost i think unless someone previously adjusted the bar on the actuator!! Plenty power i rekon unless its just down to the amout of weight stripped off her!!
