View Full Version : Bmw E36 325i Drift Build.
Hello lads and ladies :), Been a member on DI a while now so thought it was time i stuck a build thread up.
So a couple of years ago i picked up my first drifter an E36 325i (english import) AKA Rot Box done the usual
mods and after a long time waiting i pulled my finger out and got it to a couple of drift days, It didn't go well.
Was constantly breaking down and the shell was rotten in every place you can imagine. So i decided to go and
find a clean rust free 318is drive it on the road until i kill the 4CYL and i did. Took it off the road and started
the M50 swap after about two weeks (waiting on money/parts because i'm broke) the swap was done!
Then i set about stripping it and swapping everything from my old shit heap to my new car along with new shiny stuffs.
Please excuse the quality of some of these picture's my phone at the time was terrible.
Anyway enough of a history lesson ill let the pictures do the talking.
The 318is when i got it.

Non vanos engine? Turbo?
What colour is she? Nice build so far :)
Yea it's non vanos :) So boosting is an option at a later date.

I'll fix those stupidly large ones in my first post when i get the chance.
Good stuff, cool car this...€100 FOR 10 days is mighty value!! makes a trackday very affordable
Cheers man much appreciated :) I couldn't resist the offer to be honest and the seat time you get is unreal
from the minute you get there until you run out of petrol/tyres your on the track all day!
I want some e34 bbs....
I want to change my wheels, But its much more affordable buying 15's so ill be sticking to the E34'S for now.
Are you using standard suspension or what suspension mods have you got?
Running cheapy Ta-Technix coilovers which I'm actually very impressed with.
And Powerflex wishbone bushes. That's it :) No lock mods and everything else standard.

Put my ta-technix in today, very happy with the front but disappointed with the rears, they dont go anywhere near as low as i want, are yours the same?

E36 are always high on the rear, did you remove the height adjusters from the rear springs?
With my old suspension all I had was the springs in with no height adjusters and it sat down at a nice height.

This man speaks the truth! They are always going to be higher at the rear and when i first started adjusting mine
i wasn't happy with the rear either was waaay too high so i whipped the adjusters out and shaved the bump stops down a tad
much happier with it now :o Could probably go down another bit but wasn't expecting mega lows for the price of the coilovers.

Yeah ive the adjusters out, the cut springs that were in it were just as low though :L at least it'll handle better
Coilovers seriously help them! I drifted for a long time on standard suspension! Rack spacers if you find yourself running out of lock but to be fair e36 are not bad standard!
So there's been few things happening lately so thought i would do an update.
Put the word out to a few tyre shops that i was looking for some cheap rubber if not free
and luckily enough the sound lads in my local tyre shop have been putting some aside for me to take away!
Needed to get some more wheels for the freebie tyre's. I found a set of terribly sprayed style 27's and one style 28
For a bargain price of €40 and they where just 20 mins down the road from me. :D
So i set about changing the tyre's over.

The intake boot and MAF sensor where both completely knackered causing it to run horribly!
So i thought whilst i was replacing them i my as well completely re-do the intake system.
These are the parts i got from Murray Motorsport so i could make it happen.

Stumbled across this last night on the internet and wanted some opinions.
Most of you will know what it is but for those of you that dont its a BN Sports R32 roof spoiler.

You can buy the rocket bunny style boot spoilers from the UK.
I think they look sweet.
Think I'll have to invest in a BN Sports :)
I'll have to look into them. Are you running the 2.5 fuel pump too or the 1.8 ? iv got the 1.6 pump in mine but the last day out my car would bog down a bit when its about to hit the limiter
Still running the 318is fuel pump with no issues what so ever. All OBD1 fuel pumps are the same i do believe :)
Ah right, mine was originally obd2. Have a pump from a 92 320 in the shed so might give that a chance
Tidy build, I don't mean to hijack here but I've just done same conversion from 318is to 325i both e36 and I cannot get a start I have fuel injectors are working full power on all coils swings over and sometimes makes half an attempt to fire but still no start had you any wiring issues or is there something I've missed I just took the main ecu loom exactly like wat I saw in your pics with the engine and plugged it into the 318 loom and made a new earth by the engine. Any info gladly appreciated

Fuel injectors and spark plugs 100% working? Sounds like an immobilisor issue or lack of ecu. Is the engine vanos? If so you should have a vanos ecu as well as engine ecu if I remember correctly!
I had the issue of the starter not swinging on mine and the fuel pump not getting enough power for some reason. Ran a live to the fuel pump from the ignition and I have my starter on button and it starts no bother. Maybe try running a live wire to your fuel pump and see how you get on
I should also add mine is non vanos and runs a non ews ecu

Sounds like you have done it correctly mate, But as mentioned make sure your fuel pump/injectors are working perfect.
Also you have swapped ECU'S over yes? Have you still got your battery under the bonnet?
Went Drifting up at Goldstone's again recently just didn't get a chance to upload any pictures until now :o
Had another great day first day up there in the wet and lets just say it was interesting :p
Found myself running out of lock at some points in the day so might have to look into that.

Cheers for the reply but ya seems I've done everything according to plan and everything seems to be working as it should but still no start, yes I brought the ecu with the loom still on the engine and just plugged it all in. Ya battery still in the engine bay but if I got it running I'd prob change it back, space is fairly limited with the 6 cylinders.

Check for main live at the ECU. Also check for vacuum leaks make sure the intake boot is not split or cracked common problem on the E36's.
Any idea which pin is main live Iv no pin out diagram but ya Iv checked all the breather pipes and to the block and new intake pipe fitted
Nothing major happening on this at the moment will have a few updates soon.
Trying to sort out the overheating issue before i get some more seat time.
Does anyone know where i can get a aluminium radiator? Driftworks wont have them in stock till the end of may??
Cheers dude, I'll give them a shout!
I'm being very lazy in updating this!
However a few things have been happening with the car that i will post ASAP
Mainly as much seat time as possible done Goldstone's again a few weeks back
after that i decided it was time for another track so i got my self booked up for
Ultimate Drift Series last Sunday! Everything was a bit last minute and down to the wire
had a few late nights and was dashing around the place but we made the 3 hour drive to
Watergrass Hill. And what can i say! I had an absolute blast, outstanding event, beautiful day,
the car went brilliantly apart from suspected clutch on its way out nearing the end of the day
(trouble getting gears) Here's the only picture i have from the day so far hopefully more to come.

It's been a very busy past couple of weeks with lots of skids!
I was up in Goldstone's testing out the car before Ultimate Drift Series practice day that was on the 6th.
Two drift days with in a week of each other, Luckily the car went amazingly for both days and never missed a beat.
And its not every day you get to do some twinning with the one and only Chuck G that was an absolute blast!
Sorry for holding you up haha Here's a few pictures from UD.

I have an M20 flywheel and starter there if you're interested, they're meant to liven them up a good bit
I'm going to do an update on things that have happened over the past few months and bring everything up to date! I finally sorted out my cooling issues which required a new radiator, metal impellered waterpump, spal fan, thermostat and housing. After a few drift days the alternator, tensioner and idler all decided to shit themselves so they got replaced along with a new belt.

It was a non runner sat in that shed for a year covered in crap.
Although the paint is horribly faded and there is lacquer peel everywhere its more or less a rust free solid car.
And i had it running and driving in no time! :) Will upload some better pictures of i scrubbed up soon.
