Well lads, I had been looking at project builds for long enough so decided a spell ago to begin my own. Cheap and cheerful was the aim at first so I picked up an e36 coupe for a couple a hundred with the idea of lumping in a v8. By the end of stripping it down I was bored (sorry beamer fans) So I began looking again...
This popped up soon after and I had it bought within 30mins of it being posted. ;)
Rolling fd3s shell with brakes, halfshafts, diff, propshaft, rack, dash...

When I was down to just a bare shell I went about stripping the sound deadening. A few boys had told me wait till a frosty night, hammer and chisel, clean with petrol, and all the rest. Tried some a these but wasnt happy with the results so after a few calls bought myself 10kg of dry ice.

Makes some job of it, leave some pellets evenly spread across it for 5 mins, couple a light taps of a rubber mallet and it comes off clean as a whistle

I love a good cage, nearly makes or breaks a car for me so off she went to Ronan at Roco Performance, I heard from a few lads he was good,,,,he is!!! (Pics are poor all from iPhone)

Because the rx is so tight for space he even went so far as to cut out and beat back some sections from the A and B pillars to get it as tight as possible. Went for Nascar door bars for extra room, X at the back for looks, 4 extra diagonal braces, roof X, tied to both A pillars and steering rack in oem position. No weight saving in mind here just wanted a cool cage. Also with the X in the roof it will easily pass scrutiny for any other motorsport (hill sprints in mind...)

Polarice.ie they have a few centres, one in cork, dublin, but the only one that will sell v small quantities is the one in Port Laois. Think I paid €25 or something like that for 10kg of it which was loads

With roll cage in two slots in the dash were cut out to fit in place. Must make up a few brackets at a later stage to secure it.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_2453_zps244fc8d1.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_2453_zps244fc8d1.jpg.html)

Next job was to line up the engine, modify the subframe and fab up engine mounts...
This was a difficult decision. Was going to go ls400, then decided bmw 4.4 v8, but in the end decided I wanted to keep it light and as neat as possible and lets face it Sr parts aren't hard to come by so SR20 it was. Because of the new regs i cant cut the bulkhead so i beat it back as evenly as i could without breaking the seam. Got about 75mm out of it. This wont be seen anyway :p

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_3654_zps1b6fd07e.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_3654_zps1b6fd07e.jpg.html)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_3653_zpscb28e098.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_3653_zpscb28e098.jpg.html)

Using this engine hoist I made up a few years back it was very easy to sit the engine where i wanted and tilt it to the right angle
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_3698_zps93781bcd.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_3698_zps93781bcd.jpg.html)

Then set about modifying the subframe,,,after spending years welding with arc welders cant believe how easy mig welding is. Only bought the mig for the project.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_3673_zps41f9056f.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_3673_zps41f9056f.jpg.html)

This is how the subframe ended up. Chopped more than I needed to at the beginning,,,too eager,,,but it worked out nicely at the front end. (View from underneath)

Then back on with it, double checking engine position, fabbed some engine mounts and tacked them in place for welding after!!!

All welded up,,,sitting pretty

No motivation today so going to throw up a few pics instead...

Engine mounts done, waiting on Mike Deane to modify my 350z bellhousing, onto the slow and tedious stage of removing all the seam sealer and begin seam welding...

Was trying to work out where I would and wouldn't seam weld and in the end just decided - If there was a seam there it got welded. Soon had the entire top of the chassis done....

Got sick of wire wheeling seams so went off on a tangent, stuck in clutch pedal, fired in a seat and decided to fit my favorite leaver...
so tight on space with the Corbeau Sprint seats I picked up (cant believe how clean they are considering their about 6 years old)

Made up this spit to bolt on for easy removal, serious brown pants moment rotating this for the first time, thought it was gone at one stage turned out I had just forgotten a few spanners inside before turning her over

few days of fun cleaning down now ahead of me

Haha the lad will be demented between the 2 of us...

Got a chance to do another bit. New seat mounts welded in. There was absolutely no room here. Talk about a tight squeeze:p I'll add better pics when shes painted and the seat covers back on but basically its touching the hydro, touching the door, and you can just about see daylight between the seat and the cage in 2 places...

Class build so far man that cage is class. Good job with the front sub frame as well most clearance issues with sumps/sub frames people normally mod the sump iad be far happier doin it your way. Whats your plan for the steering rack though looks to be the only awkward bit

Don't talk to me... the amount of hours gone into this...cant wait to let er have it out on the track tho

So heres what I've been up to.
Steering rack mounted...must have measured this a million times before finally fully welding!!! Its about 20 - 25mm further forward from its oem placement and about 10mm higher. Main concerns were obviously getting it dead level, perpendicular with the chassis and centred perfectly.

Got the front end plated off and the connecting tubes welded on. Did this so the entire front end can bolt on bolt off. Just makes it cleaner in future i reckon to change. Just did this much so i wont have to be welding and scalding the new paint. Will finish it once i get all my parts together. Should be v v light too!!

Anyone who knows fd's well knows the diff mounting brackets are shite in them if your planning a lot of clutch kicks etc so made up 2 new custom ones. They are heavy and do add some extra weight but needs must...some of the other ones iv looked at were even bigger and heavier!!! Plan is to get some holes punched in these before paint to shed some weight off them without weakening them too much...

yeah wore pretty thin at times but i want to build as much as i can myself, none of this give the car and a load of parts to a fella and get it back ready made not having a clue how anything was done nonsense. Colours are very dark burgundy outside, should be almost black in the shade and show up the burgundy in sunlight, with a matte gun metal grey inside, bronze deeeeeep dish alloys maybe ssr's r something like that, and bronze/satin black cage. The kit i get really depends on my budget. Really want to go wide but anything near 100mm comes at a huge cost...

Great work fella, some job on the tubbing, so neat.

I'm gonna leave the front till I have to steering angle sorted. Custom adjustable rose jointed arms top and bottom up front. The lock on these fds is horrendous...

Sick build mate :)

cheers dude, I'll be up for that s14 plenum someday :)

HSD coilovers in, testing the steering lock today with standard arms, The size and location of the calipers makes achieving a good angle impossible with the standard setup. As well as that the Caster angle and hub, with the standard arms on full lock there's serious positive camber on the side turned out. So I'm attempting to fabricate my own arms. If all goes to plan I should have Caster and Camber adjustment.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_48401_zps060123b4.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_48401_zps060123b4.jpg.html)

Here's the simple gig that will mock up the new Rose jointed arms. The one gig will make both sides as they will be a simple mirror image of one another. Both arms will be near 3" longer

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/IMG_48421_zps7de50f21.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/IMG_48421_zps7de50f21.jpg.html)

Going to offset the ball joint pick up point to reduce some of the caster angle. Will do this below as well.

Probably naivety on my part not having fitted anything like this before but when Aerokit boast that the kit is so good that absolutely no work is needed to it bar bolt straight on I kind of believed them. When you fork out this much I didn't expect to have to reshape all the edges to match the contours of the car as you'll see below.

But anyway rant over, I've been told that compared to others it's quite a good fit so here's a few pics of the quarters which will be the most challenging to fit.

Putting a lot of effort into blocking this kit to get most of the waves out of it. I was going to fibreglass this petrol cap opening and flush it off but seemed a lot of work and for some reason I kind of like it, just adds a bit of detail. So chopped up the mountings off the oem plastic one, wedged it in place and fibreglassed it in place from behind. I know its a false cap but I like it!

Got a bit sick of all the body work never my favourite part so went at the rear end to break it up!
Powerflexed everything in the rear after cleaning all the arms
Had diff welded previously
Cleaned up the disks
Painted diff satin black and gave it a good clean out

Calipers are in primer and just waiting paint. What colour will I go I'm thinking yellow???
Propshaft fits perfectly very happy with. This pretty much finishes the running gear side of thing bar that I'm stuck for an sr clutch slave cylinder and 350z release fork. Anybody know anyone who could sort me for out with these bits??

This is very slow doing it all by myself. Getting a bit disheartened with the yoke now

Tried out the paint over the standard primer. This is after 2 light coats. Not 100% happy with the finish but I'll see tomorrow what I'll do. It will need another coat to get the shade all even so should darken a little hopefully. Might try out a black primer too see the difference before I carry on.

Great work and attention to detail

Doing my best :o mad to get it finished at this stage tho. Deadlines seem to just come and go

So the whole reason for the new upper and modified lower arms was to sort out the poor lock on these rx7's. It must be one of the last remaining cars with no aftermarket extra steering lock kit available for it. On a quick test fit all looks to be lining up pretty good. Have loads of camber and caster adjustment and the offset pick up outer points work well. One side of the upper arm is a little close to the coilover but shouldn't hinder me too much I'll see how it when when the cars back on the ground which should be tomorrow once a few new bolts arrive!!!

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/Brendanfd3s/bd825125-72f0-40f7-b3ae-4e425d54f7d7_zpsyhztauzm.jpg (http://s36.photobucket.com/user/Brendanfd3s/media/bd825125-72f0-40f7-b3ae-4e425d54f7d7_zpsyhztauzm.jpg.html)

The hub can rotate right back now with the caliper missing the coilover and wishbone so problem solved. Just gotta sort out offset rack spacers and new tie rods now...........

apsolutly class, atention to detail the whole way troughout this build is unbelievable. any chance of replicating the arms u have built???

Haha thanks dude, ah yeah I have the templates kept. Depends what you'd want them for tho I wouldn't go putting them on a road car to be honest because the hub is now 65mm further out than before. It'd be no bother to make up a nice set of top arms with original picks up points and rose joint all 3 points if it was for a road car?

So these fit well enough. We had problems with bend radius and that when making these top arms thats why one side is curved and ones straight. Don't think this will be the final product but good for now.

Calculations spot on just avoids contact with coilover even when rose joint is fully in

Another day another problem. Seeing as the rack moved forward to avoid the sump the boot of the rack was catching the anti-roll bar bracket so I cut the two brackets tilted forward and rewelded. It's all these little things that are taking the time

Yeah lad it's gonna be a dark burgundy it's on the bonnet the previous page. Just a solid 2k colour nothing too fancy so if it ever gets a tip I'll be able to match the colour easily again. Satin black canards splitters and skirts and either bronze or grey jr12's

Paint update. A lot of you wanted to see this all one colour so here it is. Finally. So most of the bodywork is where i want it now. This is how it sits now. I'm not happy with the paint being honest. Even the panel beater said the coverage was terrible. After three coats it still see through. Decided not to keep layering it on. After all its a track car not a show can so its going to be scraped.

All thats left now is flock the dash fit a few little ancilaries and get a loom done.

Coverage was beyond terrible then on the last coat had reactions on some panels so instead of sanding all the way back or priming again they got an extra coat. But it's a drift car soooo......never wanted a show car. Still a few bits to spray black too and some wrap to go on so it'll soon blend in not worried 😁

I haven't updated this in a while. So basically I'm very close to having this finished. Intercooler pipes are all done, fuel system plumbed, all aero quip fitting down the back, new Nissan gaskets in, injectors and rail in for the final time, turbo lines finished with new 3" turbo elbow made up. The lads are still just working on wiring my switch panel and so hopefully all going well there won't be any major problems on first fire up. Have to say I'm nervous hopefully the engines good. We added a turbosmart external waste gate too. Can't wait till it's finally running.

Will paint up a few parts too just to clean up the bay but for now all I'm concerned about it getting it running

Some real tidy work gone into this fair play ..

Thanks lad. Reckless amount of work.

So she's finally running at last. Spend all weekend fitting and refitting the gearbox. Firstly to fit new crankshaft oil seals which we found were leaking after first start up then to try figure out why the clutch wouldn't release. Turns out I need to lengthen the release fork pivot ball but anyway least I know now.
I've got fully braided brake lines. Still have to P clip them down. Braided clutch lines made up with a new obp master cylinder mounted inside the car. Intercooler modified so the Intercooler pipes are very short. And of course the tubed front sprayed blue to match the aeroquip fittings.
Still needs a few bits like sort power steering and get tie rods and chop the hubs and a general tidy up. Decided not to go with any wing or spoiler for now too

Been a while since I updated this. To make a long story short engine turned out to be a bag of you know what so I rebuilt the bottom end, got a new block, honed, king bearings, cp forged pistons and she is now running. Have yet to get it mapped hopefully will be done over the Xmas period. Just finishing touches to do now. Build for life.

DOSE! Expensive problem to run into and a lot of hassle. I bought an engine recently and hope it's a good one. I know that it was running fine a few years ago but has been sitting up. Hope it doesn't turn out like your one :(

Deadly car though, great to see an update

Making up my own one piece exhaust. 3" stainless straight through split into 2 for the rear centre exit. Extra hangers to prevent movement side to side and 2 to prevent it jumping aswel. Just need to chop the ends now and tig the lot.

Must still sort the tips but you get the idea. Not much room to sway about the rear hence the drop link too.

Bad quality pic but anyway will get a better one when it's off the lift.

Sound man. That flocked dash will soon be making an appearance 🙈 .

Fitted a Tial 38mm wastegate so no need for the internal anymore. Decided I'd run this turbo till it pops so pulled it out and welded up the internal gate

Back on with the exhaust hopefully for the final time. Tips all finished off and sections heat wrapped for piece of mind.
