View Full Version : Jzx love affair Part 2 - 81 Cresta

Been on the lookout for another x body for a while now after really regretting selling the chaser.
Looked at importing but couldn't see anythin that tickled my fancy within my budget. So after enquiring all round the country I came across this, it wasn't advertised anywhere just through word of mouth.
It's a 92 Cresta with a Mark ii front, it's not the tidiest body wise but it's straight and no rust so a good start.
Few pics

It's supposed to be black over dark grey but the front is a few different colours with the mark ii conversion.
Plan is to get a full respray, maybe new front wings as they are flared nearly too much and are very rough and new wheels and just drive it as much as possible!
Bit of spec:
Standard 1jz twin turbo
HKS induction kit
Unknown dump valve
Unknown cat back exhaust
JIC Magic coilovers
Unknown front strut brace
4 pot skyline front brake conversion
2 way diff
TRD Nardi wheel
Blitz boost gauge
Otherwise standard apart from the few electric bits from factory including sunroof and seats.
Needs some bushings etc for test so gonna check that out next sat and do up a list to order from Toyota.

Cheers for all the comments lads. Very happy to find something a bit different.
Couple of the interior, very comfy car but not a lot of head room, was gonna keep the standard seats but might have to go with a low mounted rail and recliner. Also for a car that's so loong, there isn't much room in the back!

I wouldn't agree on that one, mark ii lights are nicer, mine are hid with factory built in orange fogs, also have a spare xenon set coming. I have the factory splitter for it too but not on in the pics.
must be a personal thing so but i prefer the straight line of the lights and grill as opposed to the way the lights shape out to the grill on the mark 2

Looking for a front mount for this, anyone know what piping will fit it? I see a lot of lads using thick gtr ones, just get the piping made up then?
Something similar to how I want it looking, gonna go with sp1's with black centres, 17's on the front and 18's on the back.

Trying to decide on wheels for this... Have a few different options of a staggered set of sp1's, a staggered set of regamasters or a set of regamasters in 17's all round.
I'm thinkin the 17's all round would look better on an old car like this. Ye sp1's would look good but they are a little overdone these days. The rega's would be a bit rarer over here.. Opinions??

Yea I'm swaying toward the regas in 17's... Can't wait to get it looking as good as the one above!
Do it! The rega masters would look deadly on it.
niall s14a
05-03-14, 19:53
Yes the regas are sexy time I think il go with them, just have to decide whether to go with pretty wider rears and get the arches flared, or go with the same size all round.
Picked up a few parts off driftworks for pretty handy money...
Bride drivers side rail

Bought a set of regas off Dave on Thursday but brought these two stronger fitment wheels with me to try them on to see will they work.
Grey one is a gtr face 17x9 et18 and the gold one is 17x8 et25.
http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff470/nialls14a/28C495E5-61F3-49A7-ACB7-F7C3E7208472.jpg (http://s1237.photobucket.com/user/nialls14a/media/28C495E5-61F3-49A7-ACB7-F7C3E7208472.jpg.html)
The 81 arches seem to be even smaller than the 90's so hopefully with a bit of a roll they'll fit ok. Only problem with this staggered set is that the gtr ones have had the centre caps machined out've them so they don't match the fronts.
Replacement bushes etc are being ordered so hopefully will get it tested soon.
Cracking car, looking forward to seeing it finally painted and tidied up, great base no rust on it anywhere on it, u bought that car From my friend, he never got around to doing anything on it and had the engine not gone in the gtr I don't think he would've sold it, great memories, alot of powerful cars got caught off the hop, glad to see it will get the effort it deserves, you ve picked your wheels not a bad choice, was gona suggest how it good it looked on the 18 inch zeit wheels it came in with on the rear but the regas can't be flawed either, best of look with it
Class car nice to see something different

Yea they are, I spoke to several importers about it and the chances of picking a manual one up in black with the grey interior is next to impossible, saying that a mk ii came up about a week after I bought it but it doesn't happen very often.

Got a small bit done on this today.
Got new track rod ends new from Toyota. (Thanks to Danny)

Stuck them in, when I was at that I had a look round the coilovers, they are done, so think I'm gonna get a set of BC's for it as they're the only reasonable priced ones available. New JIC's are over 2k from japan!
http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff470/nialls14a/B6907EBC-FE4E-4293-BD00-7EB0942AD227.jpg (http://s1237.photobucket.com/user/nialls14a/media/B6907EBC-FE4E-4293-BD00-7EB0942AD227.jpg.html)
Then I stuck on the Regas I picked up, fitment isn't bad, the rears are nearly spot on when it's lowered a little. The front wings are a bit of a mess so when I get the new coilovers il raise it up and take some of the negative camber outve it.

Happy with them, think they'll look a lot better when they're painted in the same grey as the bottom half of the car.
Also found a few leaks and anti roll bar bushes gone so have a few more boring parts to get before it's ready to test

Also noticed yesterday that she's smoking a little a bit when revved after idling over for a while, could be a sign the twin turbos are on the way out so I've decided I'm gonna single turbo it.
It has a HKS F-CON so already which is the most expensive part of converting these. I have this turbo from the drift car project that never happened..
http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff470/nialls14a/E8C0297B-F13B-4892-B6FF-50A30EB3E162-170-000000095F2E60E9.jpg (http://s1237.photobucket.com/user/nialls14a/media/E8C0297B-F13B-4892-B6FF-50A30EB3E162-170-000000095F2E60E9.jpg.html)
Will be a bit laggy, on full boost by 4k but should make good power. Need a big custom downpipe to help with spool and if funds allow a custom exhaust with a big silencer and a switchable bypass like Phil Morrison has done on his 110, I'd also like to raise the exhaust up into the subframe so i can drive it without worrying about speed bumps.
When it's up on a lift getting that done it needs a real good cleaning and a wax oil to take the surface rust off.

Haven't got near this in ages, can't get the time atall. Gonna hope fully stick the new headlights in it this weekend and give the front end a rub down so it can be sprayed roughly just to get it on the road this summer.
Seen some inspiration over the last few days, making me think again about getting the rears flared out to match the front and take the narrow look off away that the stock aero gives it.

Small bit of progress today, got the new coilovers so went at I today. Only got the rears in as the fronts have to be cut off and welded in again so that's a job for another day.

Having a hard time getting the BC's on the front. They're made to slide down over the standard shocks but I've found now that the JIC's are all one piece including the hub etc.
As these are so rare finding standard shocks is next to impossible so I've left the two sets up with TDP so they can cut the bottoms off the JIC's, turn a piece of steel that'll be pressed both into the JIC hub part and into the bottom of the BC and then weld it up. They can give me a cert for the welding should I need it for the nct etc..
Also Flip Morrisey was good enough to come up from waterford to have a look at what work it needed for respraying. I had been swaying between going all black or two tone but I'm definatley going two tone now. It should be heading for paint once flip has another car finished, prob a month or so.

Finally got the suspension bits in with TDP. They are flat out getting ready for the start of the drift season by the looks of it, some nice machinery up there at the minute.
Hopefully have them back soon and get them stuck in.
Picked up a gtr intercooler for handy enough money so will have to get the piping made up for it when she's being resprayed.

Also got have to pick up a diff I've got as a spare. It's outve a 4.1 outve a mk 3 supra, be a good spare if I wanna do an off drift day. Have to drill another couple of holes in the 81 subframe to make it fit but should be handy enough.
Really lookin forward to seeing this car finished, finally getting attention it deserves, keep up the good work, just wondering though are them wings cresta wings? Will they work with mark 2 corner lamps or headlamps?

Cheers Dave. Yea well spotted, there was a bit of a mix up when I got them in the auctions. Flip says he can make it work anyway, they really need replaced as the ones that are on it and rolled far too much.
Looking really well in them pics, looking forward to seeing how she turns out, good choice sticking with the two tone!

Yeah I just looked up after posting that a lot of them swap the front part of the wings to cresta wing
least you all have a better finish at door end too, should be nice
Really love the old school crestas. Was thinking the regas were a bad choice as i prefer old school rims like ssr mk2s but after seeing the pics of them on the car they actually look impressive.
Cant wait to see this finished.

I don't want to fix it and spray over it as i want to keep it factory so will probably just tape it up and put a sticker over the crack on te outside.
Flip has her how so should see progress on the body soon.

Cresta and Mark ii wings together to provide good fitment around the sidelight and the door.

Forgot to update this woth decent photos. Had her out for a few runs but I've been away with work the last while so she's been parked up. Plans over the winter are new uprated clutch and flywheel and a complete freshen up of the engine and tidy up of the engine bay as its a mess of pipes and wires etc.. Will be going with uprated twins or a big single as well for a bit of power.

Not much going on with this lately. Stuck in the new tie rods and when doing that found the steering rack was leaking pretty bad. Also found more bushings that are done. Haven't really got time to work at it so it's been shipped off to get the work done elsewhere. Hope to completely refurbish all of the suspension and fit an s14 steering rack as they're easier to find and are an upgrade from the Toyota one.
Also thinking of changing the wheels so on the lookout for something different like advan rg's etc.

Trucking away with this still, ecu decided to fry itself which is a common problem with them so I done some research and found that it's possible to change them to a jzx90 ecu and so eliminating the problem. I had the ecu from my old 90 so all I needed was the plugs to fit my loom and get the 90 ecu re pinned to suit. After a bit of searching, i found got a harness from garage d that will complete the conversion

I've also picked up a a set of DMAC 86 arms in the hope that they will fit, done a fair bit of research on it, no concrete answers but they look to be the same. Coupled with the new JIC tie rods and ends that means the front is completely new.

Some of the you may have seen it on Facebook but the guys over in Scotland, Minty Fresh have released a range of rear arms for most x body's and altezzas etc... They're made by Russian guys who drift these chassis and are meant to be good quality and strong.

So now it's get the ecu in and hope everything works ok and get arms fitted and get an alignment done. Had hoped to have it at Autoheroes on Monday but it's not looking likely now.

Turns out the ae86 arms won't work after all. The lower arms are too short, when adjusted out to the max they will only give stock camber settings plus the mounting holes for the tension arms are different.
So I came across these local and got them fairly reasonable considering the lcas are €800 alone from Japan.
Yanack lca's, tension rods and uprated rack mounts.

Also picked up some new wheels also, will wait to get them on and have her sitting properly for photos.
Also she has been mapped, put the ecu out of my old 90 in with a custom harness so everything works as it should and it's running a hks f con pro to make sure it's fuelling ok. It made 280ish bhp at flywheel which without a front mount etc isn't too bad I think. I'll be driving it for the summer and then over the winter it will get front mount and full custom exhaust system to allow it to be ran properly low.
Getting serious parts for it now dude and nice usable power as well. What wheels ya pick up?
Properly built car this with proper bits. Fair play Niall

The car went through the test last week, failed first time on emissions but that was as a result of previous owner taking the centre out of the cat! It's driving really well now, just standard power but running sweet as a nut, hard all the way up through the revs.
I'm taking it to get suspension properly set up as it was just lined for the test, needs lots more low with the 16's on which is going to mean the exhaust will be dragging the ground on pretty much any flat surface so that's the next job, custom exhaust.
