View Full Version : my PS13 daily driver
You spend months crawling donedeal with no real intentions, seeing nice cars but never actually going the extra step.
I went to a wedding this weekend in Miltown Mallbay in Clare. After a savage night last night I was just driving into town this morning and spotted a dirty, but relatively unspoiled ps13. I drove really slowly past it and again on the way back. It was parked across the road from a garage so my girlfriend told me i should go and ask if it's for sale. She knows how retarded i get around s-bodies.
Here's what it looked like:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/v/t1.0-9/q82/p417x417/45438_10200255807219759_1082466042_n.jpg?oh=639166 ef6ba8399386ba661cd2d25fe4&oe=54E1260C&__gda__=1427415607_3fcb37d37612c48a928c16ad8fbf5d4 9
I strolled over to the garage to ask who owned it and low and behold, the first dude I spoke to (Brendan) was the owner. I asked him was it for sale, he told me everything is for sale for the right price.
Long story short, i made him an offer that he was happy with, and i ended up driving home an extremely dirty ps13 with insane potential. Although it's a non turbo, this car still has its original paint, no rust, a really healthy looking chassis, standard springs and even a standard diff! This thing has never done a ring in its life. Very clean and amazingly tight to drive. Considering this guy didn't have a clue that someone was going to be test driving his car, he had absolutely no time to prepare. There's not a rattle out of it and the engine purrs like a good thing. I drove it over 3 hours today and I definitely made the right impulse buy.
It's filthy right now and needs a serious clean, but here's a little pic:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/992826_10200254961638620_100816732_n.jpg
The plan is to have a standard ps13 as a daily driver. I wanna try keep it original. It's only a 2litre n/a and will never be a beast. I already have a drift car that i can go wild in, so this'll keep me happy on the public roads.
Opinions? thoughts? Anyone have some chaaaaape parts lol?
Currently in the market for:
Seats, grill, dished steering wheel.

That would be really cool if it was just cleaned up and decked on ssr mesh or even standard wheels spaced out slightly. Nardi classic with no dish and leather cover would be mint too!.
Well wear has a lot of potential!
Genuine Sparco suede steering wheel and boss kit and omp bucket seat on recaro rail

Currently looking for some lowering springs, some nice seats (maybe brides?) and a nice steering wheel.

She helped me clean it today too and did an epic job on the interior. She spent about 2 and half hours at it. She's awesome :)

like i said, keep it as original as it is, and it will only increase in value. do minor things but please please nothing like kits and shit like that keep it as fresh as it can be. put a jap plate on the front, lower it, refurbish the wheels and thats it
This needs a respray. I'm debating whether to stay black, or do a stock two tone paint job on it.
Something like http://b.vimeocdn.com/ts/158/986/158986525_640.jpg

i like the 2 tone but if the paint is fine on it why waste money on a full respray?
Excellent find

Nah man, spoiler looks horrendous tbh. It's for sale if you want it (the spoiler that is).
I'm thinking of keeping the bumpers/kit. I like the standard look. It badly needs a spray though. The paint looks ok from far away, but to be honest there's not a panel on it that doesn't have some bad scratches and the bumpers were attacked with a spray can before. I'm deffo changing that grill too. It was sprayed black (poorly) for some reason.
Good to see another s body around the Killarney area. It's been a bit slack of late! As for paint I'd go black again maybe with a gold flake in it, then drop it on dishy old school 16s. Best of luck with it anyway!

two tone ftw.
Imo 18's all round is too much for standard body work. 17's all round I say. Or 18's on back maybe. And looow

Yeah a bit of randomness in this thread to be fair. Plans as they stand are to respray it, keep the standard kit. Gonna get a nice set of coilovers, these wheels will look nice in the standard arches. Getting a set of black bride seats with subtle gradation. Nardi classic dished steering wheel. Next year i'll be sticking a 1j in it.
This is more or less what i'm going for, different wheels, different colour:

Only had one , stock bodied. Tein lowering springs and 15's , loved it. Could drive it to grip days without even opening the bonnet , for that I love na s bodies. Must route out a pic of it- found one. Haha pretty crappy but will post it later!
I did have another ps I bought crashed for the running gear, had 15 inch mesh's loads of spacers and those jun style uni arch jobs! Will post that up too.
Removed the antenna this evening. It was annoying me. The motor is broken and i'm not a big fan of the look of antennas anyways. Antenna now sits just inside the rear quarter and it doesn't seems to have affected radio reception. You can see up close here why i want the respray too.

Where'd you get the plates dude? Looking well. Haven't seen it around Killarney yet unfortunately.
Got the plates from japman (Aidan O'Flynn) on here. 40 bucks for the pair. He's in Killorglin actually. I'm living in Ballincollig so not around kerry much in this. we usually take the oil burner (520d) if we're travelling out of Cork.

They'll be different. The way i see it, i'll try them and if they're not like i imagined, i'll just sell them. The wheels are as good as brand new. If i do change i can see myself going for 15s or 16s in something 90s.
Where did you pick up the brides man?
http://www.speedhunters.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Irwindale-2013-90-copy-1200x800.jpg
@daz12 - I got really lucky on donedeal man. They're brand new, never fitted.
@Spartacus - that's nice, but I'm going a bit more stock, keeping all the OEM amber bits and not changing the kit. Also the wheels are gonna be slightly smaller.
Isn't that PS13 pictured above just got the OEM kit on it with a slight roll on the fenders? Aftermarket grill alright.

Yeah sorry I should have specified. I've got the bog standard kit, no skirts and less low bumpers. Not sure what the naming to differenciate is. See OP for pics.

So the wipers on s-bodies get pretty shit looking as the years go by. I decided to attack mine with some rattle cans. While i was at it, i took off all the scuttle panels and did them too. Satin black ftw.

Not as exciting as a lot of the builds out there, but seeing as I'm not able to rebuild an engine or weld a cage it'll have to do :p
Lookin good did ya just use standard primer an paint from the motor factors
Halfords grey primer and satin black. All parts sanded and wiped with prep wipes before primer. Apart from a few man hours, you're talking a cost of about 30 quid...

Gonna lower it more on Sunday. Rear centre caps aren't on because the nuts are too big. Might put spacers on. Will see when it's lower.
to be honest man i think u could get better wheels to suit the car , thats just my opinion :/ but i dont really like them at all on it they do nothin for it . xd9s or concaved csts would look class

needs spacers badly i think . those bc's can go pretty low so drop a little and your on a winner, oh and a bitta camber .
they should look good against the black i think.
Can't go lower in standard arms. Picture it with side skirts they'd nearly be on the ground. Was thinking about spacers alright... I love the way it looks though.. And I do still need to be able to take a speedbump as it's my daily...
You'd be surprised how well you can get around in a very low car when you try it. I'd say you could survive daily being a small bit lower anyway.

Pretty bad here in cork to be honest. Some deadly speedbumps and dips around the place... The arches would be filled better with a higher sidewall alright...

I know, driving from Midleton to Bishopstown on the dual carriageway takes some work to avoid where the road is peeling away... Not to mind where it's subsided.

That looks a lot better! Stick with that height I think, you'll only wreak the car going lower! Drift cars look cool with broken bumpers, road cars don't!

Cheers dude. I got the Nardi from Barry's Motorsport in Cork. I have a HUD to go in and some other nice little bits.
Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. I was a bit worried at one stage when people started doubting where i was going with it :p

met Larz at just jap, love the car in person, sat into it, didnt want to get out!
So at this stage i've told a lot of people face to face about my plans for the car. I didn't really mention anything on here until it was all a bit more concrete and the plan was actually in motion. The plan right now is to swap out the 110whp non vvt sr20de for a jdm 2jz-gte twin turbo which i got a few months ago. The plan is to run standard turbos, but up the boost to a safe enough level. I'm looking at running about 350whp (2jz BPU) which would be more than enough for the type of use the car gets. It's still my daily after all.
I'm going to get a wiring loom from thewiringspecialties who do a complete s13 to 2j drop in loom. The plan is to have it looking extremely stock, with working a/c and original s13 clocks (HUD + Digi Dash). Still deciding on where to get it done. I've a huge list of parts that i need still but slowly but surely i'll collect them with a view to having the engine in next summer after my wedding in April.
So if anyone has any 2j bits (at good prices :P) that would suit a road car build, drop me a message.
Another piece of the puzzle. An r154 gearbox with JZ bellhousing. I got this off Darren MacNamara. It's the box out of his 240sx drift car, the one Matt Powers drove at IDC rd3. Kinda cool :)

I must get it opened up and checked out by someone before the conversion takes place. Engine and Box out of the way, next step is getting that loom and a good clutch/flywheel combo.

I will retract my original statement and now definitely like the way your going with this.
t
hahahaha thanks man :p Was originally gonna be a 1J conversion but I couldn't resist that extra J... I will need to change the wheels when I do though, as 8jj just won't put the power down, but they do me fine right now with my limited power. I'm also thinking that I want to set the car up for proper handling, so the low pokey look might suffer slightly as a result. The car looks awesome right now but handles shite through fast corners when not sliding.
Also forgot to mention that i tracked down an r180 diff with 6bolt half shafts and 4bolt backing plate. Lovely tight diff so i'm happy out. The non turbo s bodies have r180 diffs as opposed to r200 which can be found on the turbos. It was out of an s14 so i had to get s14 diff bushes and s14 diff bolts too.
I've gotten a bit obsessed with ps13s too over the last few months. I'm buying up a load of oem body panels, lights, etc. noticing that interior parts are difficult to find if not shared with the 200sx/180sx.
I love this car but i really dont like the idea of the jz motor in it :( i love the stock looks or even the 90s look and there isnt enough cars like this one at the minute. If your going sorting out your 180sx to get it back on the road/track and since its a little bit beating up would you not take the engine out of the 180 and put it in the ps13 or even ibts on your original engine??? And put the jz motor in the 180sx with the kit thats on it with wider wheels?? would it not make more sense since the ps13 is going to be a daily car for you ?? but i guess there your cars but im gonna leave these hears for you keep you the good work :)

I thought about it but made decisions based on a load of factors. Firstly decided against itbs because it's the non-vvt sr20de, and itb builds can be stupid expensive with very little in return. Research showed that it would cost 2.5-3k just to get 200bhp out of the engine. Cool and different, but not for me, I want that turbo flutter and jz sound.
Secondly, I don't want to take the engine out of the 180. It has 60k on the clock from new and if you inspect the car you'll quickly see that despite getting a bit of track time, the 180 is in awesome condition. I'll be selling the 180 as a fully road legal NCT'd car, and changing the engine would add no value to that sale.
As for 90's styling, don't worry :) Cosmetically the car isn't going to change much other than a respray in the same colour.

Front swap deffo aint gonna happen... with respect to sil80s and onevias, the s13 silvia front belongs on the s13 silvia and the rps13 front belongs on the hatch.
Unsure who is going to do it for me to be honest. I need someone who is confident, competent, communicates well and who i'm sure wont let me down or keep me waiting. Not looking for a cheap job and don't want to have to go back every week because of new problems popping up... Recommendations are welcome...

You will have issues with the clutch master cylinder on the bulkhead when running standard twins on a jz in a s-body. The Nissan one is too big and comes in the way of the inlet pipe.

Yeah did someone tell me a honda civic clutch master cylinder will do the job?
Yes it will but the clutch pedal sits about 2 inches off the floor all the time. I seen a fella in NZ use a clutch pedal out of a e39 540i as they run the cylinder on the pedal setup itself as far as i know.

Minor update on this. Booked in for paint in October with Flipside Autos. It's coming off the road next week to get a list of stuff sorted and prepped before it goes to paint. I'll try keep this up to date. 2JZ swap is being postponed in favour of paint right now. The car drives fine and passes the NCT no problem, so I just want to take care of it properly. After 23 years it deserves a freshen up.

Ah savage larz. Have you picked a colour yet??
Ah savage larz. Have you picked a colour yet??
I'm an OEM whore, so i'm sticking with the original black. It just suits it. I want it to stay looking like it does, just better quality :)
Recently failed the NCT because the axle width exceeds the body width. I do like the look of my car although the fitment leaves a lot to be desired. This is due to a weird combination really... Bigger brakes and dish... I needed to use 30mm spacers on the front to accommodate the skyline brakes. that's what causes the poke. Less poke = less dish unfortunately in this case. And i don't want to go down the route of aftermarket wings. The rear would be no problem to make fit properly.
Anyways, as a temporary 'fix' i threw the buddyclub p1s from the skyline on the ps13. Lots of people love the look of it and all that, but i'm not feeling it. Although the car is better to drive (in ways), the look does nothing for me and it just looks like so many other ps13s now. It looks like it needs lips and skirts and arch rolling to make them work perfectly. Anyways, here's a pic of how the car stands:

It's booked in for paint in 3 weeks! Can't wait for that. It's coming off the road for the winter next week. I'm going to get the underneath looked at too to ensure that it's all in top condition.

fully agree on the other rims looking way better seen this down at millstreet for idc and the wheels really set it off and makes it stand out
I can't agree on the rims, I reckon the buddyclubs suit much better. I think the fitment and stance before was just all wrong. My 2cents only though
Ye I would agree with hachi, I personally think it looks better on the p1's but I've seen your car in person a few times larz and loved the old wheels on it as well.
i completely agree that the 'old' wheels don't fit it properly :p I'm getting the tyres changed and that but odds are that the viennas will be going back on the ps13 in the spring. I need to sacrifice the z32 brakes for standard ones i'd say. Then i'll sort the height and the spacers and all that. It'll look mint. Still going to go for the 'tough' pokey look but i'll get the arches rolled to suit.

lovely stuff Larz. looking forward to this. Send me on a preview snap!
