View Full Version : Buying an S14
I'm looking to pick up an s14 for drifting. I'm not too familiar on these.
Any advice on what to look out for with these so i don't end up buying a pup?
I've heard that vvt rattle can be an issue what sr20det's etc.
any and all advice very welcome!
if its for drifting - make sure you have as much of the essentials on it as ye can - T28, FMIC, 2 way diff, coilovers, adjustable arms, exhaust, uprated fuel pump, injectors and mapped if possible
then just look out for bad rust or rot
And make sure the last owner wasn't a knob either
Usually I find you can tell alot about a car from the owner
Some eejits never service them treat em like shite and redden them everywhere possible and then just sell them on to some other poor fucker
Bring a mechanic with you and check over the essentials of every car
English ones tend to be bit rusty , not all them though

rust issues in places :
behind the front seats on the floor
rear subframe where its mounted at the front (can be seen looking under past sideskirt)
front turrets up around them and on the arch tubs
Engine bits :
vvt rattle (not the worst thing but a defect non the less)
oil around the engine from seals gone etc etc
metal head gasket is a bonus, if theres non then check for usual signs of a blow gasket
suspension bits :
upper mounts on coilovers or shocks knocking
subframe bushes fecked and car is tramping
just keep an eye out for wires hanging around the place and general untidyness, theres nothing worse than having to fix another mans, what was, a minor job
Cheers guys,
Since its for drifting, i don't have a hugh budget (around the 3k mark + 1k for trailer plus spares)
so i'm looking to get the best quality car, with the best spec for cheap! (isn't everyone)
Its between a car that been on the track already or a clean road car.
The problem with the track car is that it'll have all the extra's for drifting but could be on its last legs.
The problem with a road car it the amount of investment to get it on the track.
donedeal is full of cars that look the part in the pictures, but no nct and tax are a concern. why no nct is the car is "mint"?
The plan starting off is to use something for track days (road car) and get the extras (cage etc) as you progress.
I'm more concerned about having a solid engine and box and a rust free shell.
coilovers, hydros and the rest can be gotten in time.
I'm sure shock+springs and a welded diff are enough for a few afternoons of sideways action as the SR20det is powerful enough to get you started without many mods?!
And of course if anyone has seen a perfect example of a car, don't be afraid to point me in the right direction!

I wouldn't be too concerned about a car being advertised as mint with no nct, lads dont have the money to have em on the road anymore and just leave them sit in sheds.did you consider buying a m3?
I'm just not keen on going down the bmw road.
Aren't part quiet expensive and not easily sourced?
With S14's there's plenty for breaking on donedeal......
