Ok so iv hated d1 for a good few years back now and i havent realy seen my thoughts exactly, come up in a thread on any of the forums so heres my 2c, I cant stand commercialising somthing?a lthough i know it has to be done? its still my personal opinion...

Back when MSC started i was " diggin " the jap competition scene again with new raw from the street underground style BADical cars competeing!

Msc still rocks mind..

However i never found such a perfect video to rep my thoughts as this new add for Option videos latest...

Note; TKYO DRIFT:confused:(English kack branding) Tsuchiya crashing:D , Car styles are all pretty bumish and functional looking bahh its all sooooo 9pound note'ish:confused:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lprb67y6vP4&feature=player_embedded

Myself an kev(Gar-4-age 86) are pretty grass roots and hed share these views also..i for 1 will never sell out to shity marketed commercialisin'

There was a thread on DriftWorks a while ago , discussing which drift series/scene is better , the American or Japanese .

I voted the Japanese due to MSC being there , and also because I think the American series is too commercial and seems to be moving away from its roots .....

BUT , you have to consider that in order for anyhting to progress and grow , lots of money need to be pumped into it . In turn the companies which provide that money want to be advertised , and so we get stickered up cars . Personally I prefer the MSC/grass roots/street style cars but sure without company advertising and company backing how else would many drivers be able to afford to run 'their' cars at such a high level .

From the vid though , it does seem that its all getting a bit gay.... which is shit .... ah sure Hooray for JDM tyte titties ,at 1:10 , tho ! :P

guys at the end of the day everyone wants drifting to be accepted and giving the green light by everyone, they only way this is going to happen is if big brand names come on board and inject money into the sport. then of course it gets all glits and glam and people say drifting is forgetting its roots.

now heres the question, how many people off this site are around drifting long enough to be able to talk about its roots??

Its always the same. the people who run and back drifting dont do it the love of the sport, they do it for money.
Its hard to watch something you love get turned into a theatrical performance like that vid is.
That is a load of crap.
the drivers must get a points bonus for hitting the wall.

How long has drifting been out in Japan, Flipping donkeys years. So we are alright over here for the time being. it wont get that bad yet.

Found this, it just proves the point. http://www.hashiriyaexports.com/blog/2009/03/the-death-of-d1-the-rise-and-fall/

i agree and disagree with loads of points above, but FOR ME, i dont like the Irish scene as much as nes we see on videos from abroad .Just personaly though!

We get raped on prices to drive shit 'tracks' first of all, thats the main reason i dont compete, or save to compete!

Our track time is bollox, they make you pay your in, and keep letting people pay in and in and in until people just get like, 1 run....wtf is the craic with that. keep it interesting, limit numbers to a certain extent!

Also, there is no irish cars that i can think of off my head that are apealing to me! it does my head in! all the vids from comps in Jap etc, and they have aaaaaaaaaaaall the variants of cars, all mad wheels and style! Come to Ireland, and its an s body nissan, with an sr20, rotas and a uras copy kit. yaaaaaaaaaaawn.

Id love to go to an even in Jap, and event in fact, they look like there having so much fun! they arent so feckin serious al the time, they fix things with hammers and cable ties and get on with it! thats my scene, variety, laid back, but still the skilled ones come out best. and its decent to watch with all the bad ass cars!

so anyway, whats this thread about?

couldnt have said it better man, i agree wit nearly everything you said, especially about the non variety, its soooooo boring and i have thought that from day 1 of being intrested in drifting!!! the last day we went to mondello to watch the drift day it was 95% s body nissans,BBBBBBOOOOORRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGG odd skyline, few ae86s, and an FC!!!

about d1 etc, yes, i think id prefer to watch them. Its in a completely differant league that no normal person could compete in due to money, but theres variety, and interesting looks and mods etc, none of which i can even think off in prodrift Irl. But they have all the needs for all the poorer drifters over there, as we can see with the likes of the riskydevil boys, endless tracks and trackdays, AND badass cars, winner!

every point of view and opinion helps.

the KT DK Keiichi has upped the entrance fee into D1 recently, and ya cant win or suceed in D1 if your a priveteer, you have to have all the sponsorship, and certain tyre manufactures sponsoring you,

its not really about the skill or driving anymore, espesially if your a priviteer in D1
- luke huxam had a really good blog entry on this subject

PETER T : made a good point when he said prodrift's numbers are a balls, getting 8 laps after traveling to the other end of the country and trying to get used to the car/track in that time is hard to say the least. The organising should be re-thought, which i know it wont.

There are not only S bodies with SR's, i could list 20 very different cars that could mix it with the "coolest" in japan. As already said drifting isnt long in this country and already this year you see big changes to cars, Nigel colfers build, Alan Sinnotts, James Deane's..... Like pete im off topic a little aswell

Frankae86
18-06-09, 18:35
I dont watch many vids on the net but i saw one D1 event in-car and from what i can remember it was 2 or 3 corners where the driver didnt leave 4th gear just a couple of shots of the h.brake.... Very dissapointing and seemed to be just 90% down to the car.

(I shortened the post)
I agree with the above wholeheartedly, driving the length of the country for 2-3 laps is a disgrace and really turns me away from making long haul trips for very little seat time. More regulation is needed.

....and with regards to the monotony of S bodies... have all the ex ITR heads bought 180`s lately or is it just me???

Dont have to be ancient to read into things from the past and lets face it its not the oldest form of fun in the world ;) Personally im a fan of grassroots stuff like MSC etc but without the big money drivin leagues such as D1, formula D etc making advances and generating money then the grassroots scene will suffer simple as.... grassroots still wins though

yeah i understand where u coming from! but thats in this era where lads are pumping money into mk2's and putting millingtons in everyting! i was more directing it to back in the day (well my fathers days) (even though there lovely cars to watch and listen) it was the driver and co-driver and a few friends in a car with tyres and petrol and a few spanners! a MK2 wit a PROPER ENGINE FOR AN ESCORT A 2.0 PINTO! sum tarmac arches and a cage and away u go! as my dad says the clubmen who kept rallying going were shadowed out by the wrc lads when those cars came in! it was cheap and cheerful where he used to rally every weekend for little cost and a cheap car and still be in the top 5 on most southern rallys! and have savage crack and then everyting was money money with sponsers etc. running cars! grass roots is the way every motorsport should stay and thats the main point! and yes s2000 cars are 4wd but less electronics and they need that little bit more skill but they shud hav no electronics but as said on a article on motorsport news paper by a veteran rally fan and writer, he said: he was in the scottish forcests for IRC 2009 and malcolm wilson said to him while spectating as a s2000 came roaring down the stage:"it brings us old boys back old memories" it was just the ball off those new cars without a turbo and wat a sound it is for a new car!! anyway to go back on topic this message i wrote is basically saying : I YOU GO AWAY FROM GRASS ROOTS IN RALLYING OR DRIFTING YOU WILL LOSE THE LEGACY THAT IT ONCE HAD;) AND THATS A SERIOUSLY BAD THING! LEGACYS IN SUCH IMPORTANT SPORTS HAVE TO BE KEPT FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OR MAYBE THE SPORT WILL GET OUT OF HAND!:)

If your trying to say that you'd love Ireland to still be at the "grass roots" stage of drifting thats just crazy man... It was great but i wouldnt wanna step back to that... Drifting has come on leaps and bounds here and we should be thankful for it...

If it wasnt for prodrift we'd prob still be prickin around on that kart track in rosegreen..

Im tryna say although i know DRIFTING as a sport has to get bigger and bigger but i dont like to see it steer away from its origins and just be exploited from it commerce if you understand..

btw @ queley..Im not preaching im putting my thought to the site for discussion, people seem to forget what things are even invented for in the 1st place after some time.

Read bits of this theres alot of bollix in it so here's my 2c, think drifting needs (like it or not) to be commercial, its the big commercial aspect money sponsors ect in d1sl FD D1 ect that get it out there for the world to see, if its to get proper recognition (repect)it needs big company's rocking in behind it, PD UDC ect over here if offered would rip sumones arm off to get sum sponsors like the series in japland and the US...

UDC and PD ftw tho :D

This is a confusing thread

i think what you need to say twinky is that you prefer the grass roots scene and you dont like the pro scene, job done

just remember tho that if drifting really stuck to it root only it would be just happening in the mountains in Japan and none of us would no about it

its the pro scene that has spread drifting all over the world and we should be dam glad of it

I dont think he's saying he doesnt like the pro scene but the fact that, going back to the start of the thread, D1 used to be so looked up to and people would look to that to see how it was run,how points weere scored, the cars, the technology, but now it just seems to be about money.
The show aspect and the big name brands looking for advertising space has left the true aspect of the sport fall into the background.
Anyone would be up for seeing a sport they love, whether a competitor or not, to come on leaps and bounds and advance with the years but for it to remain a success it has to keep the right things at the forefront,i.e the drifting and not the money making ability of putting on a crap "show"
