Hello all
Before i show you the progress on my first project car i will give you a quick intro.
Have been completely in love with Drifting since i was about 12 years old. My brother got me interested when we used to head down to Rosegreen to the old D1IRL days! (Have some photos will share them)
Since then have rarely missed any Irish events and have more or less seen how the whole Irish drift scene has evolved since.

Anyway, back to my car.
For the last year i have been driving this Vento.

Through on a set of BBS reps and JOMS, it has done 30000 miles in the last 12 months, but i never really liked it and am in need of Something RWD.
I wanted a ps13 or a zenki 14 but my 2 hour Commute to work and back everyday, and the not so good money i am on just doesnt make it feasible.

So i went and bought this Miata. 1.6 112000 KMS and feels nice and solid.
I will be able to skid this daily and some fun, drive it over to tullow and drive it back.
Was rough when i bought it, rag top was ripped in bits but it didnt bother me as i wanted a hard top and wanted to spray it anyway.

Tyres arrived today get them fitted this evening, coilovers should be here next tuesday, Then can get the arch roller out and get the car sitting right, Might need spacers but will know next week.
I personally like the gearknob, well aware some people dont, Again the colour will be to some peoples tastes and not others :)
Not letting out the paint yet, you will see it in a few short weeks.
Thanks for the interest

How much did ya pay for the 1.8 diff, if ya don't mind me asking? Thinking of picking one up for the FB, direct fit.

JohnRaff
15-05-13, 12:47
Diff, Half shafts and driveshaft think i paid around 100 for..
Got a load of bits off a lad in swords, really well priced.
I bought 2 sets of front hubs, 1.8 diff drive and half shafts, rear disks and calipers all for 200.
Cant wait to see your FB

JayoM
15-05-13, 13:10
Sounds like ya got yourself a good deal!

Ha, me neither. It'll be back by the end of the month. Let me know when you've the 5 on the road, would love a look at it. I've B5ZE cams here (well, there still in a B5ZE ha) that are meant to be higher lift than the B6. You're welcome to the engine if ya like, you'll just have to whip it out of the car. Hasn't been run in ages.

JohnRaff
15-05-13, 13:22
Cheers but i have been thinking about what to do power wise, i do think about buying turbo kits and all but then i remind myself why i bought this yoke, mpg etc...
If anything is going to change under the bonnet it will be getting an SR, maybe even a f20c..
But for now its just going to stay standard

Dave
15-05-13, 13:48
If you were thinking of going the turbo route, get an mk2.5 s-vt 6 speed box which is rated to 300bhp asfaik and just turbo the engine you have. If you know someone with a welder it'll be a lot cheaper than a conversion, as reliable as an sr, and probably more economical if driven right.
Edit---just seen this is 1.6 dont think the 6 speed box fits!

JohnRaff
15-05-13, 13:55
Thanks for the advice Dave but the reason for the sr would be because can get a good reliable 300 bhp, with simple mods and a map. Parts are simply got aswell.
Like i have said tho, For now its staying standard, will look into things more in the future.

haydn itr
15-05-13, 17:43
fairly big job to fit an sr into on of these if i remember correctly . you need a custom sump etc . nice work so far :)

Dave
15-05-13, 18:29
Yeah I know what you mean about the sr. There's a crowd in new zealand or australia that make the custom sumps and mount so you can drop it in but it is pricey. Im on the phone at the minuted but I've it bookmarked at home I'll post it up later.

Dave
15-05-13, 19:43
http://www.miatasr20.com/Pages/default.aspx

Here's somemore details on it from the American distributor
http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/74-engine-swaps-sponsored-v8roadsters-com/36320-feeler-sr20de-t-swap-kit-group-buy-interest.html

I dont think its worth the hassle personally, I'd rather sit with 250bhp on the 1.6. Its a lot of money!

JohnRaff
16-05-13, 10:38
Didnt realize How expensive the sump etc is! Thanks for those links tho! There is a HKS turbo kit for sale on donedeal at the moment for 1400 which looks great...

My coilovers arrived yesterday, so will get them fitted tomorrow night hopefully, get the car sitting and running at the right height, will post pics over the weekend.

Yeah I would go for that and a megasquirt pnp, rx7 injectors(if needed), and away you go!

I'm looking at similar options for more power on my own and looking at Miata turbo, a lot of people were saying for them in America it works out a lot cheaper to build a forged 1.8 sv-t engine and turbo it with a 6 speed box than getting a reliable 300bhp from the sr, which is pretty ridiculous!

Best of luck with it anyway, your certainly heading down the right path!

16-05-13, 17:54
I looked into SR route a good bit when I was building my one. There is alot of work involved. The sump, engine mounts, The diff braces to the gearbox too, something would have to be done with that.

In the end I went down the turbo route, easy enough to get 240 out of a standard 1.6
And you would be surprised how quick 200+ bhp in an mx5 is. No need to go much higher than that really!

Sitting well! Lower than my 3 anyway, and that still rubs on some of the roads around here ;) That's mainly due to the crossmember sitting well below the actual body of the car, genius!

What colour are you going for? Looks like 40 hades of grey at the minute haha.

Thanks very much for the kind comments lads, much appreciated... Car is almost done for now, and after waiting over 3 months for a seat rail and still no sign of it arriving i have decided to make my own bracket using the standard rail, so will get that done over the weekend.
Here are a few more pics, even a few gay ones with the top down..
Im very very happy with the car for now

Well quick update, a slight step backwards perhaps....
The car was running perfect for a little over a week,
http://i1323.photobucket.com/albums/u591/Johnraff/null_zps77b5144c.jpg (http://s1323.photobucket.com/user/Johnraff/media/null_zps77b5144c.jpg.html)
then last saturday evening the temperature gauge went off the clock and the engine started knocking all in the space of maybe 20 seconds... was a bit sickened but could have been worse, it happened fairly close to home so we got it home and went and picked up an engine on monday evening...
Last night got the old engine out and hoping to stick the new one in this evening or tomorrow and have it back on the road by the weekend so i can get to fermoy for the weekend..
Thanks fr all the comments again lads, really appreciated

Well I took my engine out to do the clutch and I have a bit of welding to do as well.. so not this week. Where abouts are you based? Anytime you need some advice let me know on pm and I'll sort you out. They are an awesome car with a bit of power :-) my advice is to get a kit and a good ecu. Don't bother with rising rate regualtors or any of that if I were you. I have a megasquirt and its cool to be able to do your own mapping

Haven't updated in a while, noting has really changed on the car, have been driving it every day it has been flying and hasnt missed a beat since he engine was changed thank fuck.
Have been having loads of fun in it, especially in the wet, but it really needs more power.. so over the winter its going to get a turbo of some sort, i haven't made my mind in which route to go yet but i know for sure that it will be a turbo..
Here is a few pics i have taken recently, looking forward to seeing other lads cars at Japfest now next weekend

Well, not been upto much on the car, but the last few weeks i have really loved driving it, so much fun in the rain!
I am in two minds at the moment what to do with it powerwise, i have almost ordered the sr sump and mounting kit a few times, but the last few days i have been thinking, 3000 is alot to be paying for mounts and a sump (especially when i want to keep the miata low, and if i damaged the modified sr20 sump, its 1500 quid to replace).. i have found a good complete td04 turbo kit yesterday though and its cheap :) so hopefully the guy who had reserved the kit doesnt show up with a deposit by monday so i will get it.. I will hopefully be able to have the car turbod and mapped for less than the sr mounts and sump, so this is good news :)
Fingers crossed this works out, then i will have the guts of 200 bhp to play with.
Had the car in at Japfest, was upset i didnt get to lower it or even clean it properly but it still looked respectful, here is a few pics.
Thanks

Fingers crossed you get the kit, Raff. Bit of performance to go with the look! Going by what rhys says about his turbo'd 5, it should definitely give you enough power to play with, without all the hassle of an SR swap. Should keep you happy until you go rotary ;)

that should get you up to 200 safely enough. what injectors are they? you might find you need 460cc+ injectors to hit the 200 though. hopefully you get the kit  put up a spec list later on if you can!

Touchy subject. No i didn't get it, 5 minutes after i was told i did ha... im not very happy now.. But i have been in touch with Jesse Streeter today so he said he will find me somthing in the next few days. Ha im just annoyed, but fuck it i will find another one

have been trolling websites and forums for the last 2 weeks looking for info on what kind of turbo i want and asking loads of people questions, just as i had my mind set on the kit is was gonna go for, this popped up on gumtree, i was skeptical because of how cheap it was and shite info with the for sale ad and only a pic of the box, but i said there is no harm in giving the guy a call..
after speaking to him for a few minutes it was clear he didnt really know what he had, but told me his brother bought the kit for the states over a year ago, but his bro emigrated before it got here and this big box had just been taking up room in his house...
so i took the chance and asked him to remove the ad and i went up to collect it the following day.
everything was still in the box never opened, i asked if i could have a quick look inside, finally got it open and i nearly pissed myself with excitement, seen the t28, brand new and shiney, lovely looking inter-cooler, loads of hard pipes and hoses, braided lines, decent hose clips, nuts bolts etc, so i handed over the small fee and drove home happy.

when i got home i opened everything properly but quickly noticed the manifold is wrong, after a bit of looking we noticed it is a 1.8 mani.. a little annoyed but couldnt complain as i have gotten all these bits at a quarter of the price i was going to be paying, so ill buy an exhaust manifold off cxracing next week and hopfully be back on track

here is a few pics, doesnt show all of the bits but you get an idea
