View Full Version : 1983 Toyota Carina 1UZ conversion
Here is my son 1983 Carina 1uz conversion we did last week. After drifting BMW e30 for a while,he sold it and bought this Carina as a project. Some pic when bought it...
Than I we bought 1994 SC400 as a donor...
Did order adapter clutch/flywheel kit from the USA for W58 gear box.Box I bought from the member on this forum and it will be story about it later
We had to swap SC400 1uz oil sump to front bowl sump which I had from my previous conversion
So we put flywheel/clutch on,1uz bell housing on W58 and got it ready for trial fit...
After masage on firewall and tunnel we seated engine where we wanted. We cut original engine mount bracets, rewelded them in different position and we used Rover V8 engine mounts and engine is like it belongs here:)
we modified original Carina gear box crossmember and it bolts on in original place
and shifted is almoust in the original position
We had to reweld one exhaust manifold to clear steering colum shaft, and I welded prop shaft just to be able to test how everything works.
Plan is to put Ford Explorer rear LSD axel,so propshaft will be done properly again.
So next fun part, wiring. But I was familiar with 1uz wiring as it was my second 1uz conversion....
Here is in the morning
Here is first start.Sorry poor quality

We managed to to put Lexus fuel pump in to Carina fuel tank and used Lexus fuel lines to feed engine.
So we got clutch working, put propshaft on and was ready to go for test drive.I put it in to the 1st gear, relesed clutch car didin't move,2nd 3.. 4.. 5.. reverse... the same story...WTF...
So after pulling engine/gear box out we split them and find out that box not engaged any gear,so we took gear box apart and discovered this:(
No gear teeth at all!!!This box was very hard abused or been runing without oil,but that does not matter.
The thing is that seller said that it is in working condition.I bought it and it had no shifter, seller promised me to find one which he never did...I send him few emails he responded in to one saying that he is still looking for this shifter.I never got it.Finaly after waiting for couple month I found one on ebay in USA and bought it.
And now after I emailed him about this gear box thing he is not responding....
So now we stuck with our project,he is not responding.I will wait for couple more days if he will not to reply,I have to tell who he is publicly.
We are looking for another box at the moment and have find couple. So I hope we will can continue it again...
