if im not going il send you in the right direction tho, im sure theres somebody on her going from naas anyway

Fredericks Balls
30-05-09, 21:14
Directions: Head into Naas and head out the (n81 i think) for Blessington and punchestown. If your comming from galway youd probably go to m50, get off at the mad cow and head cork-bound. If so you turn off at the big globe and its a left turn just as you get into the middle of town. You'll see it handy.

Back home in the past hour from Punchestown. I'm fucked! I'm burned to shit on one side! To be totally honest I was dissapointed with today. First off the good bits, the drifting itself was really good, the young guy McKeever did the run of the day for sure although Colfers second qualifying run was brilliant too. (Colfers car was the shit!) The three hefty shunts I saw were savage! Fair balls to the dude in the blue S13 as he even got back out for practice albeit he must've forgotten to attach the the top of the hub or somthin as the wheel was hanging off! And the quality of cars competing was top notch. The only car that looked out of its depth was Carpo's, and the Calicages S15 but they demolished that so that was that!

Ok for the bad bits. Getting there, I knew where to go but there were zero signs. Considering the amount of advertising a few signs wouldnt have killed the budget. I was never offered and I never saw a brochure/timetable so we didnt know what was happening. i was under the impression today was the Irish series but I left at 7.15pm and there had been no racing, not even single lap battle and for €20 I think thats way over the top.

And the food vans were a fuckin rip off. I know they always are but they were worse then usual I thought

All in all tomorrow is the day to be there but id never go to a Saturday again.
And overall I did enjoy it :)

Barry

Ffrenchy won the european, poor wezzo smashed his 180sx up fairly badly
Mike dean won the irish series

31-05-09, 20:57
Ffrenchy was out-friggin-standing the man is in a class of his own

on another note do you think we should pitch in an buy Bon Bon a sat nav? he seemed to have a little trouble finding the finish line

Great weekend, except for wreckin the car off the wall :( thats the joys of it tho i suppose! Some top notch drifting from all drivers, ffrench was on fire all day great to see him win.I thought the judging was a bit harsh to be honest with most non seeded guys scoring low.

Nicky
31-05-09, 21:05
You's are right there lads.. Some very harsh judging today, especialy the battle between Damien McBride in the big blue Chaser and whoever it was he was out against..

Oh, and satnav's definately sound like the trick for a few of those boys... Ahem Jonny P... lol

ya good example he should have defo gone through.but to be honest and everyone says it,its favouritism with prodrift always was always will be.

Nicky
31-05-09, 21:10
I suppose a bit of favouritism is hard to avoid, considering its the big names that draw the crowds, and the same names that sponsor such events...

Not much we can do about it, apart from stand back and wish we were out there with them :D

conorosr20
31-05-09, 21:17
Well its fairly gutting thinking you did enough and not make the top 16!Where they were starting us from was stupid anyway not enough distance to pull 3rd and we said it to graham 'oh its too dangerous' and yet the pros were given nearly the full length

Nicky
31-05-09, 21:20
Im going to be dumb here, but whats this between ceded Top and un-ceded Top 16?

Is it a matter of Division 1 and Division2 kinda seperation between drivers or what?

conorosr20
31-05-09, 21:25
its basically semi-pro and pro to put it simple!the pros are the top 16 finishers last year with an extra 4 who got their licences at licence day.the rest are non seeded pro and amateur.

Stevo
01-06-09, 01:57

Dan Moorhead had some weekend, he is SOME agressive driver,

Until today i used to wonder about all the " Martin Ffrench hype", but my god that lad can do anything with the car. Driver of the weekend i reckon!

Driftworks skyline was like something out of formula D - end of.

I had a poor weekend 2 qualifying laps, spun on the first and half spun on the second in the same place. Cant blame it on too much to be honest i couldnt get the first corner right :(

On the upside i found out a few things i must add to my driving/car setup that WGH or Mondello didnt teach me.

D.I stand was cool, Simo's starlet is proper class. and i met Will c with his personalised plate :D

is it just me or was james deane a bit of a disappointment yesterday? im not gone on the rx7 either

Frankae86
01-06-09, 14:46
Nah i wouldnt agree with you there, Mick deane senior said he didnt sleep in 3 days leading to the event, at 5am Saturday morning Mick left with mike's s13 and james was still finishing the Rex off. Thats fair motivation and passion for the sport!

He had a solid drive yesterday in known akward car to drive with little testing and setup time. Not as comitted as the likes of Ffrench and j.power but him and car went well. And its a savage looking car, great stance.

s13-ste
01-06-09, 14:53
i think its known on here that im not a huge fan of james dean(not him personaly, just think there are better drivers out there) but full credit to him this weekend, finished the car a matter of hours before he was due on track, no testing, straight out and into the action. my money is on him to be up there again this season.

McKeever was allowed to compete id say as he was a top 8 finisher in the first round of the EDC in the UK and also a regular top 8 finisher in division 1 in the UDC in the north, and because of that he would be allowed compete dispite his age.

Wes is competing in the entire super series championship, he competed in the first round in the UK. I know they can suit themselves but not in these cases.

Come on lads FFS, ye sound like a bunch of contrary little bitches ! (I mean that in a loving sort of way :))

If PD was based on who you were, then why didn't Eric or Shane Lynch qualify for Top 16 ? The judges laid down EXACTLY what they wanted the drivers to do, some could but most couldn't. Not many people were getting the clipping zone under the judges tower, which was used as two clips, both in and out. Some seemed to be struggling with the two in the teardrop as well. It doesn't matter if you go out with loads of speed / smoke and angle, if your not on your clipping points your at nothing.

As regards to Non-Seed scoring low, they're judged exactly the same as if they were in seeded if you get me ? So a 95 point run in amateur, non-seeded and seeded is the exact same run. There is no individual class scoring.

Judges make decisions on what they see and we're not always going to agree with them. That's the beauty of the beast, it would be such a boring sport if everything was determined by driftboxes as we would have nothing to talk and argue about afterwards !

The Super Series was the best event I've covered since D1 in 2006. The Superlap is the best addition to drifting since Tsuiso. The driving was spectacular, Ffrench was on a different level to everyone else, even driving a stock engined S14. It just re-enforces the fact that drifting isn't about the horsepower, it's all about the driver !

Sums up a lot of what I was going to post in relation to the lads comments!

Must also mention Tommy McDonagh in the 740 Volvo into this as well. No bodykit, no flashy wheels, no big named sponsors or anything and look how well he got on. Similar story for John Paul McCarthy in the BMW.

Echo Paddy about the Superlap too, really good addition as I said before after Ennis, really pushes the drivers for perfection and great lines with just the one shot to decide their fate in the battles.

And again it is the driver, that's what makes Irish drifting head and shoulders above other countries in my opinion, James Deane's SR20d S14, JohnoConnell, Ffrenchy and the lads I've mentioned above to name but a few with modestly tuned cars compaired to the norm

Great action from the irish, doing us proud and the guys from across the sea's were quite impressive!

Fair play to chucky, drove brilliantly.. was chatting to him while gazing at Bons R32:D

the reason most people didnt get that clipping point in front of the judges area is because they didnt want to do damage to their cars, its a bit of a disgrace and im not the only one who agrees that the big metal barrier was a bit stupid, why not have it but in front of it put them plastic barriers at least it would take some of the impact, you dont see them in england etc using metal barriers as clipping points.A lot of peoples cars were badly damages, after all were the guys/gals pumping the money into the cars and were the ones who attract and entertain the crowds.right rant over :D

Wholeheartedly (sp) agree with you there lad.

It was a bit drastic, and a wee bit too extreme in my opinion.

We weren't long there when the wee white Twin Cam came round the left hander, only to catch his tail, which then pulled the car into the barrier, and when that happens, theres no chance of getting off it due to the momentum picked up from the entry.. Even the commentators said the exact same thing.

As you say, folk are there to see a show put on my alot of self-funded drivers, and that kind of thing would put alot of boys off (myself, my brother and the fella we were there with wouldnt even contemplate that track), but then again, i suppose thats the risk involved and thats what seperates the boys from the men..

Even Bishopscourt has tyres right round the place, and an armco barrier that can move under serious impact to outline the middle of the track to save writing off the cars... ;)

s13-ste
01-06-09, 23:12
I understand where your coming from lads but as the saying goes he who dares, WINS.
Known theres a tyre wall and known theres a steel barrier there will put you in two completly different frames of mind.
im a fair beliver in if your not willing to kill it you shouldn't even think about going out, but my car aint worth half the money of some PD cars.

I never said that any of you said that Ffrench didn't deserve to win

I'm not being a smart arse but could you give me an example of favouritism in Prodrift ? I only ask because everyone seems to throw those words around without any substansiating evidence. Anytime someone has felt hard done by, they give the 'favoritism' line but if they go and ask the judges why they will get an in-depth answer as to why that decision was made. To be fair, unless your sitting in the judges seat, you do not have the best view of the course and as such are not qualified to make a fully informed decision from anywhere else on the course.

What was the comment from the commentator by the way, couldn't hear fuck all trackside !

But the clipping point wasn't the barrier, it was the hugenormous white box on the ground that they only had to put two wheels into. You don't have to physically hit a clipping point, you just need to be on it ! Obviously if you can rub it, your going to be scored higher but you don't ever have to make physical contact with it.

Nobody puts a gun to anyones head to force them to compete, it's a personal choice and like pretty much all motorsports theres a risk of writing your car off. The judges make the track as difficult as possible to improve the level of driving, it's the main reason why Irish drifting has probably the drivers in the world !

Ted i can give countless examples as could most people if they wanted to but i have alot of respect for the drifters so im not gonna go mentioning names and risk insulting them, and your right the judges do have the best view but that also means the commentators have the exact same view, and the comment was in relation to a big name vs unknown name, the judges were not allowing lads to cut the big bend low to overtake(due to it being an outside clipping point) but for some reason they decided to let a big name do it and the comment made was ''the judges seem to have changed there requested driving line there''......cant remember the rest word for word so i wont put words in there mouth, i wasnt hard done by but could see it happening.

I thought it was amazing moorehead only got 17 points tbh a slight straighten but he ran the wall both ways as close as it gets without the crashu and hit all the clipping points:mad: balls out agro driver:D

Would you PM it to me Barry if you wouldn't mind ?

I didn't see the top 16 on Saturday evening, so I can't comment directly on the runs your talking about. I'm not making excuses for James but was there a chance the other made a similar mistake or something else ? In fairness, Kearney was punished for taking the inside line against Lenihan and was booted out for it so there was surely some reason why James went through ? But again, I didn't see it !

Savage wkend.....
Super series...French was on fire, def proves its da driver not da car :)
Irish Seeded Pros...Mike Deane....couldnt be happier for a driver, been a long time comin, all last yr he was livin in James's shadow now its time for Mike to shine :D :D
Irish non seeded...Damien Shortt :D Im extremely bias so wont say anymore other than the car is in serious need of repair due to wall rubbin but the trophy looks good on my locker :D :D

Agree with Paddy on most of above points....its easy pick on the big names but if Pd were bias why did Shane Lynch and Eric not qualify!!!
Dan Moorhead=we were in Sinnotts workin on Damiens car fri evenin and Dan came sideways in the gate in some old banger,he was up for it tis wkend :)
to think he drives that car to and from an event is amazin....the roads of Carlow have to be warned Dan is a nutter :p

id have to agree lads that the best scoring line was close to the armco everyone was told this and its their own decision wether to shave it or not,In amatuer we wer told that the best line was as close to the barrier as possible and they were right cause on my second qualifing run i kept close to the barrier and you could link fully the big long left hander and scored alot higher and qualified 12th.

with regards to it being a fix i dont believe that for a minute, surely if that was the case ffrenchy ,mcdonagh or mccarthy wouldnt get a look in:)

And its a savage looking car, great stance.

the diff mount snapped on james's rex nd d prop was banging around soo, it was his first time testin the car so i reckon fair play!!!

Haha i can scrub up well eh :p

Correct, later transition on entry to clip 1st point should have put u on an ideal line to make the best attempt to link the long lefter, i was disgusted cause it was only in my 2nd qualifying lap i got the entry perfect but fukin didnt brush off enough speed then down the hill and spun, talk about disgusted:mad:

My only complaint of the weekend was getting 4practise laps and straight into qualifying :( A lot of €€€'s for 6 poxy runs.
Although i know because the time was tighter due to Super Series and things ran later than they should have.

ya i have to agree with you there danni, between tyres fuel travel and entry for a few laps makes it very costly.should have maybe run it over 3 days or some night drifting:eek:

The drifting finished at 8.20pm sat evening and at that stage the cops had been in twice to close it down. The last warning was given until 8.15pm so 5mins later wasn't so bad.

In fairness they did run as much as possible on the sat to make way for the sundays entertainment but knowing the pressure they'd be on it should have started way earlier with the Amateurs or even moved the Amateurs to another day like they cancelled it last year at Mondello due to the weather and never re-ran it

sorry for the late reply here but just have to say something bout the wall and that.......

i know a lot of guys are giving out bout havin a solid wall on the outside and all that but basically something like that had to be done to seperate the men from the boys......

the wide clip has been taken direct from america and is definatly more excitin than trying to get to a cone at the inside of a bend.... and at the end of the day prodrift is a show and there no.1 aim is to keep the crowd happy and entertained......

Along with the super lap this is one of the best things prodrift have done this year!!

Ah yeah its defo a huge crowd pleaser the way PD have some clipping points on the outside of the track and it seperates the men from the boys etc but could it also seperate the guys with a huge team backing them and those who havnt the money to keep repairing the car if they try to hard to please the crowd?!!

Great driving btw Nigel, will be shouting for ya for the year!
Loving the car too:D

I think this is a bit of an unfair comment considering noones car is ever covered 100% regardless of what sponsors they have and dont have.

If a driver aint willing to try improve his/her driving skills and tackle the wall, they dont have to, they're just not going to do well at that event, simple. U can be careful if you like or u can attack it, all depends how well you'd like to try finish.

Plus tbh I think its great for focusing on "control" of the car, if u dont have a wall you will always nearly run a bit wider because u can and up to this year we've all been able to put the noses of the car on clips, its nice to have changes.
The barriers take no prisoners so u have to be on the ball or u is in the wall!

Thanks for the support Jay!!

Peoples idea of big backing teams are all wrong to be honest.... There is no team in prodrift that has huge backing and there is no driver that just "arrives and drives".......

Just speaking for myself..... everything i do revolves around drifting.....Every single penny i have at the mo is wrapped up in drifting in some way or form..... for 6 months of the year im either drifting or working on my car.....

The General Public dont see what goes on behind the scenes and is by no means glamarous!!

Drifting in Ireland is nowhere near a professional sport and i dont think ever will be but we are all in it because we are passionate about it!!

BTW this is not a dig at what you said jay... im just explaining the reality as a lot of people have refered to "big budget teams" this year!! ;)

As for the wall....... if your worried bout your car in drifting you wont be competitive...... end of..... at the end of the day its a motorsport and motorsport costs money no matter what way u look at it..... granted the wall will cause more expense if you get it wrong but the standard here is too high and drifting needs to be made harder to sort good drivers from bad drivers........

i`d have to second that. if your not goin to push it to the limits on the track then there is no point in being on it. quarter panels are repairable:)

Actually thats a very good point danni, i suppose there's only so many times spectators can watch the same lines over and over again!

No doubt its great for the crowd, just wasnt sure how people who may be struggling to pay there way in drifting in the current times felt about it, but then again as you say, the skillfull drivers shouldnt hit it, and its a test of skill at the end of the day!!
And i know in Ireland theres no such thing as arrive n drive, ha! all competitors at all levels work flat out to compete!

Speaking of which Nigel, you should put up some pics and spec of your yoke here->Projects and Builds thread (www.driftireland.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17):D

Good to see the point of view from those on track too!
