View Full Version : Paulfluke's SR86 .....The road to PD / IDC.
Hey guys,
Thought I'd throw up a progress/project type thread on my new SR86..
My story - I've been on here for years, dipped in an out with various cars but never really had a proper car or build thread to throw up. I mainly spend most of my time on E30owners.com with my chromie. Some of ye may also know me from FreshFix that I run with Marty Moore. So after attending nearly all the PD events over the last few years and always wanting to enter I decided fuck it if I don't buy a proper car a try my hand at PD now I never will...
So I bought this....
http://sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/422903_4692239143149_1633296993_n.jpg
I bought it from Chris Brady right after round 5 of Pd, previously Dennis Healy's car. To say its a fairly sorted car would be a bit of an understatement. With Sr20 up front, 550cc injecters etc etc and suspension to match it's all I'll need already, so there won't be a whole lot of upgrades needed. Basically all I plan to do is tidy up the interior and give the exterior my own touch...prob a more standard '86 look.
But before all that, since I plan on entering PD/IDC next year and being a complete novice, I thought I better get as much seat time as possible. So Eglinton in Derry got booked. I got there early and by chance so did the organisers so I got some invaluable dry track time to myself. Here I have to say a massive thanks to Con Tinney (M3con on here) who sat in with me and gave me som invaluable pointers...
I did however give the car a little "hi, I'm Paul" tap...

...was bound to happen really :) pulled it out of the tyres and plowed on for another 5 hours - it really is a value for money day at €12 hahah.
So when I got home the car looked like this..
http://sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/420775_4878581001579_916129551_n.jpg
Bit rough but it didn't miss a beat all day and it'd do for the next practice day. So Driftfest Tynagh on oct 28th got booked - and after no more than some bonnet and wing manipulation to have it looking a tad more respectable and a new set of tyres, off I went.
I was kinda shitting it about Tynagh to be honest and after hearing ticket giveaway's on the radio on the way down even more so..I was expecting big crowds and serious drivers that I'd be getting in the way of. Things didn't get any better when they put me in the caged class ( red ) that looked a bit more serious to me...
http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/564883_461422580567709_1997897858_n.jpg
Anyways I took me about half a lap to forget all that and start smiling and I was pretty happy with my effort for the day..

Didn't smack the car and no problems otherwise. Another great day with loads of track time and extremely well run, only downside was the rain but sure nobody can do anything about that.
So thats about as far as I am to date - next weekend I'm heading for Bishopscourt ( I live in Donegal ) for another practice day so looking forward to that. I'd love for a dry day but we'll see what happens...They run a kinda competition at the end of the day too - not twin battling but simply judged on hitting clipping points - perfect for me just now...so I'll continue with a post on that and prob some car tidying stuff.
Paul.

What front subframe and rear end setup is in this one ?
Rear end is Vanette narrow axle, welded 4.1 , cusco 4 links, t3 panhard rod, trd anti roll bar, hts 102 shocks, rsr 6kg springs.
Not 100% sure on front - think standard subframe with t3 coilovers 8kg springs, t3 tension rods, trd anti roll bar, ps knuckles, am outer tie rods with everything fromt and rear poly bushed.
:)
Good to see Drift cars starting to show up in the county, dont know why there is not more for such a motorsport mad county, good luck with the car...

How ye. This is a bit of a thread bump - kinda forgot this was here but thought it'd be good to update if even just for me to look back on! :)
So..last time I was talking about bishopscout but unfortunately I never made it - cant remember why now, more than likely dolla related. Anyway the next day out ended up being a Mondello practice day in Feb. (Think I may have done another Eglington day in between but have no pics to jog my dodgy memory! )
Mondello was pissin rain but a still a fully awesome day out.

Even fitted another seat and brought the g/f along.

I was happy with my driving on the day overall, no massive entries or much linking really but it gave me a chance to push the car and myself a bit further - 3rd gear - woop - and I didn't crash or kill anyone. Result. And again the car performed flawlessly.
So back home and, now that I was a fully skilled drift king, decided to fix the previous damage and give the car a look of my own as there would be no more crashing for me. So bought new front and rear bumpers and tried my best to repair the squished wing - not the neatest job but it would do - paint time. Now I've sprayed the odd wheel now an then so thought how hard could doing the car be. Very, as it turns out. Nightmare of a job, including one pretty serious fire in the garage lol but the end result although roughish I was pretty proud of.

Job jobbed, time for more drifting.
Then next day out was back to Mondello with AE86irl in April. Dry day woohoo... I had a mate from Donegal sitting on with me most of the day and we took a semi serious approach -aiming for imaginary clips etc while getting used to a bit of speed in the dry. We made steady progress all day starting to link the s at the back of the pits and getting smokey pulling third on the back straight along with trying to manji and generally having a laugh an taking the piss at times. Great day and probaly my fav so far.

That was my last day out befor IDC round 1.
So back to Mondello again. I'd booked the fri practice day for IDC round 1 as if figured I really would need the practice. My mood changed a bit here, it wasn't enjoying myself anything like the previous practice days. Felt like pressure and nerves were killing me. The long waits and single run weren't helping not to mention the pretty fast and commited entry - I wasn't prepared. The day did'nt go well.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/61952_10151405598816546_1627001677_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/61952_10151405598816546_1627001677_n.jpg.html)
Fuck it though - chalked it down to opening day nerves and left for the day for a feed and a beer ready to attack it again sat.
Sat cam around and felt a bit better on the early morning runs. They were running two cars together as opposed to the singe on fri so things were running a bit quicker - no as much time to think myself into trouble before runs - the nerves were still very much present though! . I stayed back as the chase car on the initial runs and found a car in front to be a good help. I could judge speed etc a bit better.
Unfortunately then disaster struck - or Dave Egan as most know him lol :) haha no fault of his own to be fair - on like the second practice run that'd I'd decided to lead I spun, Dave was chasing in the 350 an couldn't avoid me - bam! - tank of a 350z at speed into drivers door. Not plesent and the best advert for door bars I've ever seen.
With a bit of running around and help from a great communiy ( mainly Ian Stryker and his landrover ) I got the car passed by the marshels to get back out there - only thing was I'd missed all of the practice, which I needed - badly. Next time out was my first qualifying run.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/375958_404760166298214_1858248071_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/375958_404760166298214_1858248071_n.jpg.html)
So got to the line and tbh I was unbelievable nervous - couldn't calm down - hella annoying. Got the go anyways an went for it - 1st, 2nd, 3rd - wand - entry - all while talking to myself faster than I was driving hah.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/554143_10201116012961657_525462644_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/554143_10201116012961657_525462644_n.jpg.html)
To my total amazement I nailed it - clips , speed, transition, angle - right up until I realised all this half way through the last corner lost concentration and spun it lol. Gutted and pissed at myself.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/923454_404760106298220_973074652_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/923454_404760106298220_973074652_n.jpg.html)
There was worse to come. My second run was a long wait at the line due to a car off track I think. I had serious pressure on myself an the nerves we're the worst I've ever experienced. When I got the go on the line I nearly pulled off and gave up - somehow managed to keep going though - wish I hadn't. I remember getting close to the entry and forgetting everything, hesitated, messed up, locked up and went straight on into the barrier.
Weekend over.
Stuck around got over it and enjoyed the rest of the weekend....roll on round two I kept saying.
Round 2 Punchestown was rolling round pretty fast and I had some work to do. Firstly the door and sill from the 350 bashing - not a big deal, a new door was got sill was fixed -done. My meeting with the barrier was a little more tricky. The ps wheel had been pushed back and the chassic leg kinked a little - beyond my skill. So I was recommended a guy for the job tand ook the car up. He seemed to know what he was at and quoted a good price so got the job done - turned out it wasn't but more about that later. I got the car back and it still needed a little tidying and alignment.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/601666_10201238992876078_1802468857_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/601666_10201238992876078_1802468857_n.jpg.html)
so off for alignment and out with the rattle cans and stupid stickers in true broke ass style.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/960183_10201306507323897_1448445007_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/960183_10201306507323897_1448445007_n.jpg.html)
Thought it was fitting - off to round 2.
Round two I gladly took the opportunity for of Friday practice again. And again it didn't really go to plan. First dodgy at best practice run and my fan decided to sheer a blade punching a hole in the rad. Back into pits plus a spin into Nass for some putty and rad seal. Morning practice missed.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/936261_10151452493841546_1349807276_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/936261_10151452493841546_1349807276_n.jpg.html)
The second session came around the rad was fixed and holding but my first couple of runs were a mess. This kinda goes back to the previous wheel and chassis leg repair - basically it wasn't done right and the ps wheel was still a bit back and catching the inner arch/footwell on left lock. I'm pretty sure this was causing the wheel to slow or lock at points and me spin - maybe or maybe not - I ended up in the tire wall anyways, not very hard but it still made a mess of that leg again.
Weekend over. Friday this time.:mad::mad:
Again stayed around and enjoyed the weekend as best i could.
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w60/paulfluke/912307_10151407022216546_1272962674_n.jpg (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/paulfluke/media/912307_10151407022216546_1272962674_n.jpg.html)
So that prob way too much reading but we're up to date. Car has been fixed again at a different place to an expensively high standard - I'm broke yet again but at least its done right.
With Ennis only a few weeks away I'm at a loss what to do. Its a track I'd love to do an think it's maybe a bit easier than punch or mondello but without any friday practice and not being able to afford a day somewhere else before I'm reluctant to say the least. Affording Ennis will be a battle itself. I may be best off sticking to the practice days the rest of this year, getting a bit better and a bit more confident and trying IDC for 2014.
Feels too much like giving up though......

I wouldn't stop half way through the season if I were you Paul , you seem to be getting the hang of it good and fast so I'd say stick at it for the rest of the season and then if needs be , take the time out next year to practice / build up confidence
That's my 2 cents worth anyway

see you in Ennis dude ;) it is not fast at all, be sure and get your wheel alignment sorted though!
The car looks savage man fair play....as the lads were saying, if I was u I'd just go to ennis and get some seat time at a savage track...not too fast. Good luck anyway dude
