Bought my first s-body and first non-BMW RWD toy :)

1990 200SX with 55k miles (unlikely ha)

Being on the other side of the country I was fairly worried about wasting time going to see it but it turned out to be a pretty good car. Boot lid is rusted away but other than that rust is fairly minimal and it's an original Irish car.

It's completely standard except for a shitty steering wheel and a welded diff

Plans are for it to be a cheap low budget but fairly sweet looking daily

http://i46.tinypic.com/ktco1.jpg

There's a few issues to sort out:

Turbo gasket is blowing
Speedo and temperature guage have a mind of their own
Body wise it needs a new boot lid plus there is a small rust spot on the roof and one on the inner sill both can be fixed fairly handy.
Interior needs a strip, wash and a big air freshener

Can't afford to spend much on it but after that ideally what I want is:

Cheap Coilovers
Cheap Wheels
Kouki Kit (depending on how much they go for nowadays)
Respray (most likely staying red, possibly a darker red tho)

After all of this she should be a very nice road car

Also I'll be pulling the engine anyway (may as well paint the bay) - so was thinking of doing the big end bearings, purely because of the horror stories I've heard. Their cheap enough anyway plus I really don't think the mileage is genuine. Thoughts on this? Anything else I should be doing to the engine reliability wise?

I've been toying with the idea alright. But I much prefer the kouki kit, I really don't like the front end at the moment, and I'm afraid that a lip won't be enough to change my mind. Altho some of the cars in the pics look pretty sweet.

Won't be making a decision or buying anything till next week anyway so it could go either way depending on what sort of money I can get Kouki bits for..

liking this!,keep the standard bumpers, way too many uras kitted ones about, plenty low and it will look class, ignore the horror stories about the big end too,, have had plenty ca engined ones,, never had one give up,, dont go mad with the boost though, 11-12psi will be fine, have some wheels that might suit you too,

decobyrne106
06-11-12, 22:20
get some 32gtr wheels spacers, bit of camber up front and low. and that would be a nice car. and like what everyone has said, keep the stock kit

cheers lads, after a few days the bumper has grown on me so need to sort a custom lip of some sort to tidy it up... possibly have a set of (very) subtle skirts organised too and a boot lid.... so thats all thats happening to the body for the moment!

all goin well we'll be spraying her next week and it should be mint then!

was also thinking instead of goin to the bother of pullin the engine straight away might just do the turbo gasket, get it on the road and put it through a test... sure for all I know the gasket blowing is hiding other noises (hopefully not) so I'm better off driving it for a bit first...

started stripping the car, interior being removed just to clean it all out and then if I go for a very different shade of red I'm goin to spray inside the doors, boot, etc..

** that's not rust in the boot, its the wooden piece that holds up the carpet

well it's coming along SLOWLY enough

paint prep is taking ages with random scratches and stone chips, etc. plus a tiny bit of repair in places...

all going well it should be in primer by tomorrow evening and hopefully sprayed by the weekend...

I was thinking that alright, but I'm not sure if the rotas are going to work out at all any more.

They're et30 and 9" all round, I don't think they'll clear the arches or the wings, plus I fitted front right coilover and wheel hits it, so I need to get a hold of small spacers today to test fit but the wheels will stick out even further then.

Hopefully it works cos I do like the wheels :(

they will fit no problem . just roll the inner lip on the rear quartes and on the front wing . im running on my 180sx 18x9.5 et 20 rears with a 225/40/18 tyre and running a 17x9 et 10 on the front 215/40/17 tyre . they will work wont need any camber or fucking about on the rear and and dought you will need and on the front eaither ..
that front splitter better be touching the road man when its done :D
also ment to say i have a 20mm front spacer and a 10mm slip on rear 1 so you should have clearence ..
and great progress and keeeping an s13 on the road .....

cheers for that, it makin me feel better anyway, I'd hate to hav to sell the wheels and the plan was always that it'd be as low as possible.

I need to stick on a small spacer on the front anyway, I've the same tyre size on front same wheel width but higher offset - you still think I'll get away with it without rolling fronts? How close is your tyre to the wing?

Also there was a small dent on the back left quarter just above the arch, like somebody tipped it goin into a garden, so I can't flare and I'd be afraid to even roll it now in case the filler cracks... I should have rolled the arches before fixing and spraying but too late now :(

Cheers

well mine are et30 all round as well just using spaceres... am well mines to low and impractical to drive really the wings are rolled flat and its rubbing the side wall of the tyre as well so i dought you il be running that low anyway ? ahh just go easy get some 1 that has done it before plenty of heaat and a steady hand with the roller and all wil be sound :)

04-12-12, 10:47
ha no won't be THAT low but I'll go as low as possible as long as I can still crawl over the ramps goin into work...

cheers anyway man, I'll get a spacer today and stick the wheels on this evening and see what it looks like anyway.. hopefully it works...

if not I'll get onto someone about rolling and check what the story is with the filler... before I resort to changing wheels...

right, so the outside of the car is nearly all back together just front bumper, doors and boot lid left...

but the wheel situation has fucked up progress... I've started a separate thread on it http://www.driftireland.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33505 hopefully some ideas come out of it...

So finally got to putting the whole thing back together... All the interior bits were already out so I cleaned them up a bit

http://i50.tinypic.com/4smvxj.jpg

Serviced the car, stuck it back together and finally it came out of the garage ;)

It's still not done, plenty of plastics left to fit, need an arch liner, skirts spacers to fit the wheels on the front, spray the wheels, etc.. etc..

The outside hasnt been polished or cleaned properly yet but the car is finally back on the road so happy days :)

so one day of driving and the car is off the road

first the earth off the starter fell off - so had to get pushed to start before figuring the issue out

and then the feckin clutch decides to shit itself :(

ELV-iS
28-01-13, 15:27
Haven't updated this in a while...

Sorted the couple of small issues... fitted a standard Exedy clutch, it'll do the job for the moment....

The issue I had with fitting the GTRs was cos I was using original top mounts with the Tein coilovers and it was pushing the shock too far forward... that'll be sorted soon anyway with a set of apex coilovers that I may have lined up...

anyway onto the cool shit...

in my effort to keep it OE looking I picked up a pair of plastic chuki sideskirts...
and a pair of random fibreglass spats just cos I was lazy and kouki rear stuff is exshpensive...

I'm preppin them for paint at the moment and should have em on the car by the weekend hopefully....

http://i47.tinypic.com/18f1i9.jpg

I also picked up a set of these bad boys... not mad sizes or anything but I think they'll suit the car very well...

http://i46.tinypic.com/2m5fi2e.jpg

Can't wait to get them on...

Thought I'd update this as I'm getting close to having the exterior as I want it...

I've got the Meisters on, fitted Apex coilovers (removed the Tein shite), fitted the skirts and spats and its a lot lower than it was...

http://i45.tinypic.com/24o7s7k.jpg

http://i49.tinypic.com/i5pumv.jpg

Still needs more low... but the Mesiters are 17s and needs another inch to close the arch gap somewhat, hopefully it clears ramps... but sure fuck it has to be done.... Need some spacers too, front and back when I scrape the cash together to make it a bit more respectable lookinh...

Oh and I would love to get my hands on Origin style rear lights (http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h463/k1984w/ee31253c.jpg) too... might tint or spray the originals for the moment anyway an see what they look like...

After that, bar a bit of cleaning up...
it's time to move onto the engine
