I bought an S13 last week and i was out diffing and messing around the cross roads last night.I was spinning about for an hour or so.

as i pulled away from the last cross above my house a tapping noise came from under the bonnet.I pulled in and checked and the noise is coming from the top of engine on the right hand side.

i started the car this morning,it barely rattles when cold but give it a little rev you'd hear it clearly.

Did I do major damage?:confused:

I`d say you might want to invest in rocker stoppers. Do a search on DW, but dont tell them your a differ as you`ll get flamed like a whopper.

any chance its got an sr and you were banging it off the limiter for a while?

if your lucky youve just broken some rocker arms. If your unlucky you may ballsed up your engine good n proper

No barely hit the limiter cause the roads were wet so i was taking it kinda easy plus im only a beginner so im just starting to learn.

Get someone that knows SR's to have a look at it for ya.
Take off the rocker cover and investigate.

That was the obvious question I was going to ask.

If it is an SR20 and it had broken a rocker arm then the car would not run correctly(missing on 1 cylinder)

If it is a CA18 then it doesn't have rocker arms but are quite prone to crank float and bottom end failure.

sounds to me like bottom end failure, id pop off the rocker cover first and have a look to see if its the rocker arms though

he said the noise is comin from the top of the engine not bottom
most likely a broken rocker arm

bootem end failure noises sound like they are comin from the head, happened me two months ago

was about to say that myself! could he have fucked a tapped or dropped a valve aswel? no expert on jap engines atall just having ideas.....

never heard a bottom end fail soundin like it was comin head thats a strange one

Ive seen it a few times people thinking they had a tapping noise up top but it turned out to be bearings in the bottom end.

Yeah, ive heard big ends sounding like its coming from up top also, just the vibrations working up through the block id imagine. A hateful noise :(

If its only slightly tapping and still running somewhat ok, it might just be manifold gasket or somewhere around there blown, or mayb cracked..

Check and see if theres exhaust gases blowing from somewhere, or if its not this you may have done rocker arm damage if its an SR20.

Yea its an SR20.I didnt get around to taking the rocker cover off yet to see whats its like in there.The car is running fine no shortage in power etc,just this tappin noise.I heard a car running with the big end bearing gone and it was alot louder than this.fingers crossed :(

if its still running ok could it be the vvt ratteling? would they start ratteling just like that?

has it a vvt sproket?
if its a uk car id bet thats what it is, it went on my 14a and sound like a broke rocker

Its an S13 might not have VVT.

bring it to someone that knows that there lookin at.... How can anyone tell whats up with yer car by just sayin theres some kina of rattle in the head.... could be any number of things!!
