View Full Version : Mercedes Clk 1UZ Powered - now with boost!

Right so this this is going to be my first drift car so its going to be cheap and cheerful. Yes I no its an odd car to make a drift car out of but the shell was free so I cant complain. Nothing Mercedes is going to be left in it, so if I do give it a tip or brake something its not going to cost a fortune!:)

The running gear is going to be s13/14, so subframes, coilovers, brakes, diff etc...

The engine is going to be a 1UZ, if anyone doesn't know what this is its a 4.0l v8 from a lexus ls400 or toyota soarer. So hopefully it will do the job.

The shell is going to be really modified since it weighs about 100 tonne, everything that i can cut out will be cut out. Since I dont plan on using this in prodrift the whole front will be chopped off and replaced with a spaceframe type deal. The rear will be similar. Most of the panels will be fiberglass to reduce weight further.

This is what i have done so far!:p

I should have the s13 subframe fitted tomorrow and maybe the front subframe, depends on the weather!

I'm planning on using an r154 because that's what I have but I know of someone with 2 w58 boxes which I might try and buy just because the r154 is for my mini, but I also need a few other bits and pieces of other cars to make it work!:p
It's a bit of a pain of a job but il manage.

its upto you but to be honest id put the 1j in this and the v8 in the mini, them v8's are not realy a good yoke a stock jz will have plenty of power for s stripped out merc couldnt weigh as much a full chaser and if you made the car meet pd specs it could be worth a few bob to some one if you ever sell it on, i cant realy see the point in the mini myself but with either the v8 or the 1j it will be just a crazy little yoke!

Ya I know what you mean, I am tempted to get another 1jz for the merc but having seen quite a few people with turbo problems I would like an n/a drift car.
I no I mightn't have much power with the v8 but I don't have a turbo which might save me some €€€€. The engine is costing me very little so if in fact it doesn't work I can allways change it to a 1jz. Ya, there is absolutely no point having the 1jz in the mini but as you said its just going to be a crazy little thing!:p

This might slow up the mini a small bit but the main thing that's going to slow the mini up is a lack of money for the thing.:p
I'm hoping to have the merc going for the same money as I need to get the mini rolling!:D

Nothing is bolt on!!:p
for the r154/w58 you need a different bell housing, flywheel and through out bearing!

Amm for the sr you need an adapter plate custom flywheel, a sr friction plate, a 3gste (mr2 turbo, celica turbo) pressure plate, universal through out bearing with a few custom bits and bobs!

You can buy a kit for each type of gearbox, they are all around the same price, 800-1000 (thats with a good clutch)!
but the sr box isnt exactly as strong as the other two, but yes they are cheaper and way way more common!:)

Im more than likely going with he r154, the strongest one!

Nah they won't, where the arm attaches to the subframe its about 3" or so further back from the drivshaft and it stays that same distance away all the way along the camber arm!

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0194.jpg

Also my v8 started running shit the other day when i went to move it.
after a bit of investigation i found that it was running on 4 so there are a few obvious things to check, coil, distributor ........

Have a guess what was at fault!;)

Ya I was looking at them, the engines are simiular only 2 bhp difference the only thing that put me off one was the it's a BMW, the amount of wiring would be too much for me.:p
The 1uz isn't too much better but, it is slightly better.

I decided to take a few pieces off the engine today, including the auto gearbox.
i might try something different to convert it to manual.

Since i have the 1jz for the mini lying around i said i may as well see how the flywheel off that fits the 1uz, this is how i got on.:)

first fit of the fly wheel looked promising.

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0238.jpg

this is the first problem i have, the ring gear doesn't have a large enough diameter. But i think this is solvable but removing the ring gear off the 1jz flywheel and replace it with enough of the ring gear from the auto 1uz. Hard to explain, ye will ave to wait and see!:p

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0239.jpg

this is the next problem with the flywheel, this is the same problem you would have with an mr2 flywheel, its a simple fix tho only needs to be re-drilled.:D

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0240.jpg
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0242.jpg

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0247.jpg
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0251.jpg

Now back to problems.

the engine is hitting the fire wall in a few places, again an easy fix.:p

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0253.jpg
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0254.jpg

Another problem, this is my own fault tho.
the sump is hitting the cross-member by a nice bit, il probably have to cut a section out of the cross-member and out of the sump then il will surely fit properly.

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0255.jpg
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0257.jpg

the last problem are my engine mounts, when taking the engine out half of one came with the engine the other half stayed in the car.:(
SO THOSE ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET HOCKEY PUCKS FOR ENGINE MOUNTS?????
i cant find any!

Right it's been a while since the last update, havnt got much done with the thing dou to other cars and jobs getting in the way.
but i have got a little bit done.

first of all i got my flywheel back, i have been insured that it will be strong enough, with the amount of holes in the thing im a bit worried about it, but we will wait and see!

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0131_1_zpsa592b36c.jpg

i also got i few arms and bits for the front suspension, like everything sr in this car i have chopped and modded them!

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0079_1_zps960c94fb.jpg

bottom arms only have a slight bit put into them but its a wedge which makes tings slightly easier for me!

i changed the top suspension points also to make sure nothing is near to binding, the camber is now a little much but it is very adjustable so will tweek it when its rolling properly.

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0134_1_zps23d3e01c.jpg

they are two pots that came off the rear of merc, since anything would be better than the standard rear s14 brakes i said il try and make them fit.

http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee455/liamcrowley/Photo0135_1_zps4e61bbec.jpg

they wont be too much work to get fitting!

recently i have been making lots of banded steel wheels for people so i said id make a set for the merc.
they are 17x9.5.

ya patience is something I'm running out of with this car!:p

I went to a machine shop over the road from me and asked him what would be the best way 2 change the hole pattern and he said its much easier to drill new holes to make sure it fits 100%, he said elongating the hole wouldn't be as accurate!

Amm I'm not using an adapter plate, I'm doing it slightly different.
Keep an eye on the build thread and you'll see what I'm on about!;)
But if you did want to use an adapter plate, it a bit awkward because none of the holes line up and some arnt too far from overlapping each other.
If you are good on the computer I'm sure you'd master it!

I was sceptical at the start thinking this was gonna be a cowboy build but its sweet.

Those steels are savage!!

One thing though - in the pic where you say the flywheel strength worried you, what about the pink writing on the flywheel saying warped - no good for use???

Keep it up,be sweet to see this thing going.

liamcrowley
22-04-13, 10:21
Haha il take that as a compliment!:p

Ya I know it seems a bit dodgy but it should be ok, and ya it does say that on the flywheel, it can be straightened by resurfacing it but im actully going running an sr clutch and flywheel it's cheaper to get the sr flywheel drilled than to get the 1jz one resurfaced!

Savage job, fab work is class. ...... although i can understand why lads spend thousands building cars and when it comes to wiring there to miserable to buy a couple of different color rolls of wire. Talk about making hardship for yourself in the future when tracing a wiring fault!!

I done a quick job on wiring this for liam. Wat cant u understand ! Wiring is simple and straight forward any man who wires a car from scrath knows the job and if a problem occur s down the line will b able to fit it. 5 or 6 wires per circuit wats hardship ?

im not sayin its a problem, but you might not be with him at every drift day in the future if something goes wrong. im not sayin theres anything wrong with the job ya did, its nice and tidy in fairness, im just sayin why not run a few reds for lives, blacks for earths etc just to save time reading relays to see which is which.

Right il be frank,

It drove

It went somewhat sideways(no lights or brakes made it interesting)

It broke(fuel pump went bang)

Good to finally drive it tho.
