i have this build in a few places but i never thought to put it here.. ill copy it over so i hope i makes sense
right.. here goes...
ive had the mx5 for about 8 months now and i when i got it the car was a standard Jap Special..

ad a go off getting the last few bits off the engine and out she came.. bit of a struggle with such a long transmission but thats RWD for ya :P cant wait t get the gear box split next and do a full service on it. not gonna rebuilt it though its pretty much perfect not a crunch or whine in any gears. have to change the clutch and skim the flywheel on the other engine i got though and change the release and spigot bearings!

farted around again for a bit last night. waiting on parts and then ill tear the engine from the donor car.. for now i did my gearbox seal

did a bot more this weekend. the Ecu and manifold will be ordered at the end of the week :D Rang Joe Power and had a chat about mapping.. getting fairly ancy cant wait to drive it again. pics below of the hydraulic cam followers. most of them were pretty much solid so hopefully the clean will sort the ticking on warm up

small update from the weekend.. went at the bushes on the front of the car but got pissed off trying to undo all the bolts in the awkward areas.. so off with the frame

and dropped the sump so i could clean the oil pickup and drill and tap out the turbo oil return at work :D

not much of an update but here it is.. cleaned and painted the suspension parts.. waiting on alignment bolts and she can go back on... had a moment of madness and took of the rear subframe too for the same reasons as the front.. this has turned into more of a rebuild than initially anticipated haha

update. engine is nearly ready to go back in after tapping the sump.. waiting for the hammerite on the subframe to dry solid then i can throw that back on and in with the engine..

gearbox ready to go too so once they're lined up and joined again the front end will go on.. then my attentions can be turned to the rearend....

so fair ive figured out you get pissed off easy and paint everything :p:p:p hahaha.

Haha it's like a copy of tims, even down to the same ecu inter cooler etc ha! Good stuff, there a cool car and pretty damn nippy with the turbo!
I actually have the whole front very nearly finished with brand new bushes ball joints and all.. the rear frame is stripped painted and bushed too just have to put it together.. I started the beginning of april and hope to have it finished within the month.. :)

i just started a simular project on my car. took out the old fucked 1.6 and im getting a 1.8 ... no turbo yet though haha

are u just using a n,a engine and bolting a turbo to it r did u get a turbo engine outa some place ? cool build
Its an NA6CE from a later mx5 with a long nose crank.. All mx5s from factory are a deturbod 323 Engine.. So its a bolt on kit prety much apart from the wiring and choosin hat setup you want blah blah blah

some serious work and time gone into it mate, fareplay....
a very good im not really up to date with mazda stuff tbh , it proply be worth your while to trow in a thicker cosworth head gasket in to be safe to be safe, cool build dow lad best off luck car has a nice stance aswell
still a bit of rust to sort out but im happy with the way this fits. i need to make a bottom bracket but for now i know where everything lines up

What way are you working the airflow meter ? I was looking at Kierans and think a set of ITB's on management would make good power with a proper exhaust...

Kruiser im running a megasquirt with a intake air temperature sensor and 2 bar map sensor that'll eliminate the afr
Some lovely bits arrived today.. Just for the record Abe from ARtech was an absolute gem to deal with.. answered every question that i pestered him with and most importantly fabbed me a serious exhaust :-)

Downpipe was built by Artech Fabrication and the rest of it was built by Automania in Ballincollig..
i havent done a huge amount to this lately due to time restraints. i have the car running on its Megaquirt now and the provisional map is sorted. i haven't started mapping it to the boost yet but im waiting on a wideband sensor (Old one broke) before i can do that..also i have to mount the boost controller and wastegate actuator
came across a nice LSD and brake updrade that i couldnt let go though.. plus i have all my gauges too :D So the car is back up on stands again while i do the swap over.. very happy with the way this project is (slowly) taking shape. although it wont look alot different to what it looked like before, itll go like the clappers.. the more i think about it the more i want to take it out drifting next year. i just have to go and get some different wheels and some bigger balls

i fitted a set of glanza 295cc injectors as one of the lads had them handy. managed to get up to 7.25 psi before my duty cycle maxed out.

Ya i can but might only go a little bit lower as my exhaust is quite low on the back. Next job on the list is the rust and a clutch, she's off the road now for a few months to get it sorted..

The BCs are unreal compared to the TAs i had before. its like driving on clouds :D Cant wait to have it track ready!

Cleaned all the subframe and engine for painting. there was an oil leak from the turbo so thats sorted now. should have panels today or tomorrow. the end is in sight. I also depowered the steering rack so i wont be pushing fluid around for no reason.

Cheers Haydn! The way the car is now i can pull it apart really easily. No power steering or aircon to worry about so its two bolts on the gbox, three or four on the engine and unplug a few sensors and shes out. Subframe is 8 bolts and i can lift the car over it with the hoist haha
Cheers Haydn! The way the car is now i can pull it apart really easily. No power steering or aircon to worry about so its two bolts on the gbox, three or four on the engine and unplug a few sensors and shes out. Subframe is 8 bolts and i can lift the car over it with the hoist haha

It was getting in the way of the turbo outlet so i did away with it. same reason for removing the aircon. and the pump was gone anyway so it didnt really make a massive difference. i took the rack out and pumped it clear of fluid so it isnt that bad tbh.
heres a short vid from about 3 months ago running 5-6 psi so its nothing too impressive. still feels fast though and the pull is lovely :)

So i'm having a few issues with this old girl.
Issue 1 is something im hoping is an easy enough fix. I've noticed in recent days that it's going considerably rich every so often for no reason. this isn't good for the engine...
So i've narrowed it down to what i believe is the IAT sensor. i plugged it into the laptop and watched the IAT reading and it sat at 21 degrees with an outside temp of 16 so all seems well.. i think there's an intermittent wiring issue. i disconnected the IAT and the reading sat at -15 or so. that would fool the engine into thinking its cold so would dump more fuel and would explain why its going rich. its only doing it every so often so tonight i'll investigate and report back! :afro:
Second issue is with the clutch. there's a distinct whine every so often coming from what sounds like the bell housing that goes away when any pressure is put on the pedal. it sounds to me like the release bearing but hopefully it's something irrelevant as i don't plan on pulling the gearbox off to look. i'll adjust the master cylinder throw out and see will it cure it.
Third issue is solved. after i got back from Japfest the back wheel was squeaking. i got a new set of pads and after some investigation found that the caliper was siezed solid and had eaten the disc. Thankfully i had a spare caliper on the shelf that was in good nick so that's on now. i hate brake fluid so very much.

issue four is an odd one that could be down to a few things. every so often the car will pour blue smoke out the exhaust with a heavy burning oil smell. it only happens in traffic or when she's idling. its more than likely down to the turbo but i cant figure out whether its fuckered or is it to do with the oil return returning oil below the level of oil in the sump. some R&D and clear hosing will solve it just have to spend time at it.

So...finally! I have steady iat readings. Took all day and i even had the ecu apart amd turns out t was a bad earth. Running better but still needs a turbo haha
I also fitted a set of spacers to level off the steering rack and get rid of the bump steer. Sterring feels lighte but shes in bad need of tracking ha

did u cut the hubs that u put those spacers on the rack or just rack spacers?
Im not sure what you mean man. The rack spacers are designed to raise the rack to reduce the angle between the rack and track rod ends. It reduces bump steer and gives lighter steering

Not really anymore dude. I was gonna drop a forged 1.8 in her but any spot of wet and it wont grip on this power. So ill raise the boost on this engine and be happy until it pops haha. Mynturbo shit itself last night so i need another!
Forged 1.8 with a six speed box and diff would sit at 350bhp fairly comfortably but as you say it would make it pretty undriveable! What turbo are you running? what did it set you back for the manifold and downpipe?

i think what i meant was are the spacers the same idea as the likes of the japspeed tie rod ends but they drop the point of the rod to straighten the rod as those spacers raise the rack to give the same affect,
ive been looking into if rx7 tie rod ends are similar to mx5 1s and use the rx7 drop rod ends or whatever you call them

i looked into what was up with my turbo, it was only the actuator.. sorted that and then got ancy and raised the boost to 0.9 bar. its mad!

Put her on the dyno this week. I guess I'm happy. Timing still needs tuning so there's more in her I hope. Lots and lots of little improvements to be made I need a knock sensor so I can change the timing its still pretty much stock timing map but the dyno man changed a few cells while still staying safe. 200 HP is still weak though. Baby steps I guess

Then i noticed an issue with my AFRs. on ful boost they were all over the place and on warmup. well pretty much everywhere,
has a look and saw i was missing some bolts on the turbo

the bolts here are M10 for extra stregth. just had to redrill the turbo and fit a new gasket.

after i remapped it again its running sweet. i also fitted an EBC and just making adjustment so so i can run 1 Bar.

The wastegate port is pathetic so a die grinder will be needed!

Turbo is on. Its goes like this
2000rpm .... No boost
3000rpm... No boost
4000rpm... Whats that slight whooshing sound?
5000rpm.... Brraaaaaaaaa
Holy f**king shit where did that telegraph pole come from!!
Needs tuning though. I got some det up high closer to 190kpa so i loaded some fuel on that shiz till i can get on my mates dyno.
Think i kinda prefer the t25. This will do for now but i might rebuild the t25 and put it back on. I might gain some rpm off the threshold my pulling timing from the cells around where it start to spool initially and add some fuel. Might also try taking away some fuel. Theres arguments for both

update!! It's been a while
So i had a few problems with the car a while back.. the return line for the turbo shat itself, and the engine then in turn...shat itself..
This little beast had me going for a while but the lack of power and open diff hurt...i even got checked for aids after i drove it the first time...

make no mistake, this car is not clean, and i do not take care of it.. the bodywork is really shit, but the mechanics are fairly solid... thats all i want from it
