ok first off excuse me lack of knowledge here.

i have a standered diff in my 14a and im happy with it for every day usage. it locks up to the right fine but requires some clutch banging to the left.

iv had enough of welded diffs and dont wanna go down that route and a 2 way isnt really in my price range.

Will a shimmed diff make much of a differenece??? who does it and what money would it cost ..... i dont really know anything about them but i keep hearinf "get your diff shimmed nikki "

any help is apprecaited .... sarcastic heros are not wanted :p

i know you dont want to but if your life is about sliding and not about lifestyling ....weld it..a shimmed diff isnt really better than a normal viscous, a 2way or weld it

nothing mythical just a waste of time... all it is is a extra shim put in the viscous diff to tighten up the diff

well as i said id no idea what it was or what it done .... so thank you for the info . prob not even worth getting done if it just tightens the diff

Wouldn't be an expert on it, but Will_C shimmed the diff in my mx5 drift car, and it worked perfectly. Basically my understanding is that you make the shims up to whatever widths you want/decide. And the wider, the more it will tighten it up. We put a lot so worked the exact same as a welded diff. Reason we didn't weld it, was that the 1.6 mx5 diffs are shockingly tiny, and with 235bhp shouldn't really hold up. By shimming it it was more likely to wear out, rather than breaking with a big bang like a welded we thought.

Shim it up ! Great job ! I shimmed 2 or 3 diffs for lads. One was in an r33 after a cusco exploded , he said it was as good as the 2 way

I shimmed my diff in feb and have been givin it alot off shit since and never missed a beat, i bought 4 different widths off shim from nissan and ended goin .46mm thicker than the one in it, whole thing took an hour and 45 mins from start to finish and was the first time i've had a diff apart

Well thats the ones i got so when the diff was out i could make somethin work, have read about ppl just stickin a .8 in but i didnt want it as tight as practically welding so only went slightly thicker only time it can let ya down is 2 different makes off tyre either side as in one way griper than the other on a bone dry day but one bang off the clutch and its grand. Generally with 2 same tyres i've had no problems

i dont mind it being very tight , iv just had so many welded diffs im sick of them haha.

ok so i could just order the 0.8 shim and get that put in yeh ?

to do it right what shim thickness you put in on the inside u need to take of on your outside bearings or the diff wont fit in the casing also remember when u pull the diff out of the casing and remove the crownwheel to re fit the ps imput shaft (the long 1) and keep it fitted till u have fitted the shim and are ready to fit the crownwheel again when u do it youll see what i mean
