View Full Version : Refurb the dish
Wel lads iv got a set a ultralites nd the polished dish seems ta be corroded or something like that.. Is there a way of polishing this out?? Thanks one help..
sand it back the corrosion.
keep going to finer sand paper from 200-2000 or 3000 depending how good finish you want and then polish the rim by hand!
Should come out brand new for ya!

You can even get it in the cleaning section in most supermarkets (as you are a man I don't expect you to know this exists) :)

Thats a lacquered lip, you'll need to sand off the lacquer first then go up to about 1500 grit and polish with peek.
1500 is still a bit hard. keep going to at least 2000 and it will polish up nicley.

Just a quick question on this one lads. I want to refurb the dishes on my wheels too. If i do as said in this thread could i then give it a coat of lacquer so that it keeps the shine or would it keep it without lacquer? could be a stupid question now but i really havent a clue about wheel refurb ha. cheers

Forget about Peek. Autosol http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_18 5799_langId_-1_categoryId_212371 works better and faster, also it's not that messy like peek. I just compare these two on my old Keskin wheels using polishing head attached to drill and with angle polisher.
If you're looking for wet sandpaper this crowd is best place to go. You can order mixed grit. Can't beat their prices.

If you give a coat of lacquer you'll end up loosing mirror finish. Also you can't spray lacquer on a polished surface cause it will start to coming off. Finish your polishing with 1500-1800 grit, and don't use any polish after all. Just clean it, heat surface up small bit and star lacquering.
Myself I wouldn't lacquer polished lips, quick clean once a week will keep them shining. If you have a power washer that'll help you a lot.

I have to replace my sets, cause they all worn badly. I'll try this one, thanks;)
I was using cheap stuff so far, and have to say that it's very good value for money.
It cost me 50 euro for 5 of them in local bargain store "Army Shop" in Killarney last year. Now they are 13 euro each.

Can't say much about the compounds cause I never used them. I prefer Autosol :afro:
keep them polished:cool:, the laquer will be good for a while but if it doesnt take proper it will just lift and you'll end up back to square 1.
it happened to me:mad:
I use the drill myself.
Get the red compound bar onto the mop and then the Blue compound bar on a loose mop and you end up with a great finish.
Finally got around to doing this last week. Turned out very well. Jacked up the back of the car, pulled out a stool and put it in 3rd gear. Made my way through the different grades of sandpaper and finished with autosol. Have a before and after pic there. Not bad for 20 mins per wheel! Cheers for the info lads
